  • Color, texture, and shape act as important information for images in human recognition. For content-based image retrieval, many studies have combined color, texture, and shape features to improve the retrieval performance. However, there have not been many powerful methods for combining all color, texture, and shape features. This study proposes a content-based image retrieval method that uses the combined local and global features of color, texture, and shape. The color features are extracted from the color autocorrelogram; the texture features are extracted from the magnitude of a complete local binary pattern and the Gabor local correlation revealing local image characteristics; and the shape features are extracted from singular value decomposition that reflects global image characteristics. In this work, an experiment is performed to compare the proposed method with those that use our partial features and some existing techniques. The results show an average precision that is 19.60% higher than those of existing methods and 9.09% higher than those of recent ones. In conclusion, our proposed method is superior over other methods in terms of retrieval performance.

  • This study analyzed the duct characteristics of hubless rim-driven propeller (RDP) used in underwater robots. In the previous study, flow visualization experiments were performed with an advancing ratio of 0.2 to 1. The vortex at the front of the duct increased in strength while maintaining its size as the advancing ratio decreased. Therefore, it is necessary to study the optimization of the duct shape. Conventional propeller thrusters use acceleration/deceleration ducts to increase their efficiency. However, unlike conventional propellers, it is impossible to apply to airfoil acceleration/deceleration ducts due to the RDP structure. In this study, duct wake flow characteristics, thrust force, and efficiency according to the duct shape of RDP were analyzed using numerical analysis techniques. Duct design is limited and six duct shapes were designed. As a result, an optimized duct shape was designed considering duct wake flow characteristics, thrust force, and efficiency. The shape that the outlet width of the RDP was kept constant until the end of the duct showed higher thrust force and efficiency.

  • In all the Rapid Prototyping (RP) techniques, the computer-aided design (CAD) model of a three-dimensional part is sliced into horizontal layers of uniform, but not necessarily constant, thickness in the building direction. Each cross- sectional layer is successively deposited and, at the same time, bonded onto the previous layer. The stacked layers form a physical part of the model. The objective of this study is to develop a software for automatic generation of unit shape part(USP) for a new RP process, Variable Lamination Manufacturing using the linear hotwire cutting technique and expandable polystyrene foam sheet as part material(VLM-S). In order to examine the applicability of the developed software to VLM-S, USPs of general three-dimensional shapes, such as an auto-shift lever knob and a pyramid shape were generated.

  • The goal of crashworthiness is an optimized vehicle structure that can absorb the crash energy by controlled vehicle deformations while maintaining adequate space so that the residual crash energy can be managed by the restraint systems to minimize crash loads transfer to the vehicle occupants. Front side assembly is one of the most important energy absorbing components in relating to the crashworthiness design of vehicle. The structure and shape of the front side assemblies are different depending on auto-makers and size of vehicles. Thus, it is not easy to grab an insight on designer's intention when you glance at a new front side member without experiences. In this paper, we have performed the explicit nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis on the front side assembly of a passenger car to investigate the effect of thickness distribution of the front side assembly on the collapse shape, which is important in the aspect of controlling deformation to maintain adequate space, from the viewpoint of reverse engineering. To do this, we have performed crash FE analysis for the assembly by varying the thickness distribution of the assembly.

  • A gasket is known as an important component for mechanical sealing between mating surfaces. In case of the refrigerator, a gasket is generally installed into the edge line of a door to prevent cold air leaking out from the inside of a cabinet. The gasket shape used in a refrigerator is very complicated; it has a few deformable small rooms and wings (upper part) and inserting part (lower part) into the door. By the intricate shape, it takes much time and trouble on analysis by using a full-shape model. To settle down this problem, an effective design way of a gasket is proposed in this work. The inserting part is parametrically designed using FEM without considering the complicate upper part, Through this work, computational time and efforts are much reduced comparing to the full-shape analysis method. And the performance of a newly designed gasket was evaluated qualitatively.

  • In this study, the penetration characteristic from the cubic and cylindrical penetrator consisting of tungsten material with the velocity of 2,300 m/s is evaluated and the penetration possibility into the target is confirmed. The design of shape and size of penetrator is directly related to space and weight of the warhead. AUTODYN-3D simulation is used to study the penetration effect of penetrator. The purpose of numerical analysis is to verify the penetration characteristic with various L/D penetrator. The penetration performance of penetrator with identical weight due to the shape is also confirmed. The cylindrical and cubic penetrator has enough penetration energy on constant target body. Because the possibility of 2'nd penetration is important factor after 1'st penetration into target body, residual velocity of residual mass must be existed as much as possible. As geometrical shape ratio increases, penetration performance is confirmed to improve.

  • A shape of loop-pipe in a compressor affects the vibration of compressor. In this paper, optimal design of shape of loop-pipe to decrease the stress was carried out. Body and shell were assumed to be rigid, while loop-pipe is considered to be flexible. The finite element model was derived and programmed. Genetic algorithm was used for optimization. Locations of 18 point in loop-pipe were considered as shape variables, while the shapes of loop-pipe were interpolated as polynomials or ellipses. Maximum stress of loop-pipe was used as a fitness function for optimization. The spatial constraints and acceleration response of shell were also considered in optimization. The maximum stress and acceleration could be reduced by 79 % and 49 % respectively.

  • [ $BaMgAl_{10}O_{19}:Mn^{2+}$ ](BAM:Mn) phosphor particles with spherical shape were prepared by spray pyrolysis from colloidal solution with silica. The phosphor particles prepared by spray pyrolysis from aqueous solution had irregular morphology after high temperature post-treatment. On the other hand, the phosphor particles prepared from spray solution with colloidal silica had spherical shape after post-treatment. Colloidal silica used as additive improved the spherical shape and filled morphology of the precursor particles prepared by spray pyrolysis. The precursor particles with filled structure produced the BAM:Mn phosphor particles with spherical shape and non-aggregation characteristics after post-treatment at $1400^{\circ}C$ under reducing atmosphere. The phosphor particles prepared from colloidal solutions formed the crystal structure of BAM:Mn phosphor irrespective of the silica contents. The BAM:Mn phosphor particles prepared from aqueous and colloidal solutions had similar photoluminescence intensities under vacuum ultraviolet.

  • Rail clamps are mechanical components installed to fix the container crane to its bottoms from wind blast or slip. Rail clamps should be designed to survive the harsh wind loading condition. In this study, the jaw structure that is one part of wedge-typed rail clamp is optimized, considering strength under the severe wind loading condition. According to the classification of structural optimization, the structural optimization of a jaw belongs to shape optimization. In the conventional structural optimization methods, they have difficulties in defining complex shape design variables and preventing mesh distortions. To overcome the difficulties, the metamodel using kriging interpolation method is introduced, replacing true response by approximate one. This research presents the shape optimization of a jaw using iterative kriging interpolation models and simulated annealing algorithm. The new kriging models are iteratively constructed by refining the former kriging models. This process is continued until the convergence criteria are satisfied. The optimum results obtained by the suggested method are compared with those obtained by the DOE (design of experiments) and VT (variation technology) methods built in ANSYS WORKBENCH.
