  • The main purpose of this study is constructing new velocity fields on the base of shape function used in finite element method and showing the possibility of application it to metal forming processes. Utilizing the 8-node quadratic rectangular element, we expressed the velocity within the deformation region by interpolating the velocity of each nodal points. And the upper-bound formulation from this velocity fields was derived. In order to confirm the validity of this method we applied it to axisymmetic combined extrusion problem. the results of load show that this method is on better agreement with experiment than the conventional UBET, and also the flow pattern and profile of extruded part are reasonable.

  • Laser-assisted machining (LAM) is an effective machining method for processing difficult-to-cut materials. Prediction and estimation of preheating effect of the LAM is difficult because of moving heat source. So it is necessary to study the preheating effect of the laser heat source irradiated on the curved surfaces of workpieces of various shape. In this paper, thermal analysis of the LAM for 3-dimentional workpiece with cylindrical shape was performed. The results of this analysis can be applied to obtain the optimal preheating method and path for LAM of 3-dimensional workpiece.

  • The composite used in this paper was prepared by hot-pressing ball-milled Mg alloy powders, in which NiTi shape memory alloy fibers in a row were sandwiched. The microstructure and property were examined. It is shown that the composite consisted of a homogenous matrix with uniformly distributed NiTi shape memory alloy fibers, recrystallization took place in the Mg alloy matrix which was subjected to plastic deformation an adequate bonding formed between the matrix and fibers; the density and tensile strength of the composite increased after the hot-forging; the hot-forging process is capable of improving properties of the composite.

  • Centrifugal pump consists of a axis, a impeller and a spiral casing. The impeller is the most important component in centrifugal pump. But to minimize flow loss in discharge passage including spiral casing, the shape of spiral casing is very important also. So, to investigate the effect of shape of the spiral casing on performance curve of pump, the characteristics of spiral casing were studied through numerical analysis for centrifugal pump used on industry field. From the results the rectangular model was showed more loss than the others because of asymmetric flow field.

  • The effect of distribution shape of porosity using a quasi-3D theory for free vibration analysis of FG microbeams is studied analytically in the present paper. The microbeams are simply-supported and nonhomogeneous, with power function variation of Young's modulus along their thickness. The modified coupled stress theory is utilized to consolidate size dependency of microbeam. Both even and uneven distribution shape of porosity are considered and the effective properties of porous FG microbeams are defined by theoretical formula with an additional term of porosity. The equation of motion is obtained through Hamilton's principle, however, Navier type solution method is used to obtain frequencies. The influences played by many parameters are also investigated.

  • The lifetime and corrosion resistance of the coating depends on its thickness and composition. We checked how the plating progressed according to the shape of the product to be plated. There was no significant difference in the composition or thickness of the plating according to the shape of the separately plated products. Samples of different shapes collected from products with complex shapes showed no significant difference in composition depending on the shape, but significant differences in thickness. This difference is due to the difference in applied current density depending on the shape of the product.

  • A 3D scanner scans and captures the shape of a real-world object. The captured shape can be used to construct three-dimensional model for CAD/CAM applications. In this study we have tried to design a cell phone cover by using the 3D scanner and reverse engineering. A 3D scanner is used to capture the shape of a cell phone. The 3D scanner generates a point cloud as the shape information. A three-dimensional CAD model for the cell phone is constructed from the point cloud. A cell phone cover is designed based on the CAD model of the cell phone. To check the integrity of this design process a prototype of the cover is made and assembled with the cell phone.

  • The prestress force effect on the fundamental frequency and deflection shape of Prestressed Concrete I (PCI) beams was studied in this paper. Currently, due to the conflicts among existing theories, the analytical solution for properly considering the structural behavior of these prestressed members is not clear. A series of experiments were conducted on a large-scale PCI beam of high strength concrete with an eccentric straight unbonded tendon. Specifically, the simply supported PCI beam was subjected to free vibration and three-point bending tests with different prestress forces. Subsequently, the experimental data were compared with analytical results based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. It was proved that the fundamental frequency of PCI beams is unaffected by the increasing applied prestress force, if the variation of the initial elastic modulus of concrete with time is considered. Vice versa, the relationship between the deflection shape and prestress force is well described by the magnification factor formula of the compression-softening theory assuming the secant elastic modulus.

  • A number of mode shape-based structure damage identification methods have been verified by numerical simulations or experiments for on-line structure health monitoring (SHM). However, many of them need a baseline mode shape generated by the healthy structure serving as a reference to identify damages. Otherwise these methods can hardly perform well when multiple cracks conditions occur. So it is important to solve the problems above. By aid of the fractal dimension method (FD), Qiao and Wang proposed a generalized fractal dimension (GFD) to detect the delamination damage. As a modification of GFD, Qiao and Cao proposed the approximate waveform capacity dimension (AWCD) technique to simplify the calculation of fractal and overcome the false peak appearing in the high mode shapes. Based on their valued work, this paper combined and applied the AWCD method and curvature mode shape data to detect multiple damages in beam. In the end, the identification properties of the AWCD for multiple damages have been verified by groups of Monte Carlo simulations and experiments.

  • In this study, a fuzzy control algorithm was developed for the randomly irregular shape of cold-rolled strip. Currently developed fuzzy control algorithm consists of two parts: the first part calculates the changes of work and intermediate roll bender forces based on the symmetric part of the irregular strip shape, and the second part calculates the weighting factors based on the asymmetric part and modifies the pre-determined roll bender forces according to the weighting factors. As a result of this, bender froces applied at the both sides of the cold-rolled strip were different. In order to simulate the continuous shape control. fuzzy controller developed was linked with emulator which was developed based on neural network. The fuzzy controller and emulator developed simulated the cold rolling process until irregular shape converged to a tolerable range in producing uniform cross-sectional strip shape. The results obtained from the simulation were reasonable for various irregular strip shapes.
