In recent years, there have been concerted efforts toward predicting ship maneuvering in shallow water since the majority of ship's accidents near harbors commonly occur in shallow and restricted waters. Enhancement of ship maneuverability at the design stage is crucial in ensuring that a ship navigates safely. However, though challenging, establishing the mathematical model of ship maneuvering motion is recognized as crucial toward accurately predicting the assessment of maneuverability. This paper focused on a study on sensitivity analysis of the hydrodynamic coefficients on the maneuverability prediction of KVLCC2 in shallow waters. Hydrodynamic coefficients at different water depths were estimated from the experimental results conducted in the square tank at Changwon National University (CWNU). The simulation of standard maneuvering of KVLLC2 in shallow waters was compared with the results of the Free Running Model Test (FRMT) in shallow waters from other institutes. Additionally the sensitivity analysis of all hydrodynamic coefficients was conducted by deviating each hydrodynamic derivative from the experimental results. The standard maneuvering parameters including turning tests and zig-zag maneuvers were conducted at different water depths and their effects on the standard maneuvering parameters were assessed to understand the importance of different derivatives in ship maneuvering in shallow waters.
In order to improve the ship maneuverability, It is important to estimate precisely the hydrodynamic coefficients of added mass forces acting on a ship especially in shallow waters, and simple methods for predicting such hydrodynamic forces Is also very desirable. In the previous paper using 3-Dimension potential flow theory, it has been demonstrated that potential calculation is available to estimate added mass coefficients. The present work is aimed at the suggestion of the simplified formulas for predicting the translation and lateral motion of added mass coefficients in shallow water. So, 3-D potential flow theory is also used to calculate the added mass coefficients in deep and shallow waters for Series 60 model which has 5 different kinds of block coefficients (0.6-0.8), SR196 model and T/S HANNARA. After some series computation, simplified formulas for Predicting the added mass force in shallow waters is suggested based on the computation results of Series 60 model. The formulas consist of the combination of principal dimensions and the water depth; d/B, Cb, d/H. The predicted results are compared with the Computation results for SR196 model and T/S HANNARA. The precision of predicted results by simplified formulas are good enough for the practical use. (d/B : draft-Breadth ratio, d/H draft-Water depth ratio, Cb : Block coefficients).
Assuming that summer surface waters in the South Sea (northern East China Sea) are formed mostly by a mixing of three source water (Changjiang Discharge Water; Kuroshio Water and Yellow Sea Surface Water) we apply optimum multiparameter (OMP) analysis to calculate the mixing ratio of each source water to a given surface water. Since OMP requires more parameters than the number of water types (three in this study), we utilize two radium isotopes of dissolved $^{226}Ra\;and\;^{228}Ra$ along with temperature and salinity. Parameter values of each source water are deduced from in situ and historical data. Results with three source of waters on the surface waters are quite promising with less than $1\%$ of unanswered portions. Results not only reproduce the measured temperature and salinity faithfully but also discern the water masses of similar T and S according to their source water mixing. Extending OMP analysis to a whole water column obviously requires more parameters because more source waters are involved in the water mass formation. Original OMP routine utilized dissolved oxygen and nutrients. However, they seem to be perturbed too much by biological activities in the case of shallow waters. We discussed the use of other potential parameters. Also the benefit of parameter substitution is briefly introduced for the future OMP application on shallow waters.
Salinization is an important environmental problem encountered in coastal aquifers. In order to evaluate the salinization problem in the western coastal area of Korea, we have performed a regional hydrochemical study on shallow well groundwaters (N=229) collected within 10 km away from the coastline. The concentrations of analyzed solutes are very wide in range, suggesting that the hydrochemistry is controlled by several processes such as water-rock interaction, seawater mixing, and anthropogenic contamination. Based on the graphical interpretation of cumulative frequency curves for some hydrochemical parameters (esp., $Cl^{-}$ and ${NO_3}^-$), the collected water samples were grouped into two major populations (1) a background population whose chemistry is predominantly affected by water-rock interaction, and (2) an anomalous population which records the potential influences by either seawater mixing or anthropogenic pollution. The threshold values obtained are 34.7 mg/l for $Cl^{-}$ and 37.2 mg/l for ${NO_3}^-$, Using these two constituents, groundwaters were further grouped into four water types as follows (the numbers in parenthesis indicate the percentage of each type water) : (1) type 1 waters (38%) that are relatively poor in $Cl^{-}$ and ${NO_3}^-$, which may represent their relatively little contamination due to seawater mixing and anthropogenic pollution; (2) type 2 waters (21%) which are enriched in $Cl^{-}$, Indicating the considerable influence by seawater mixing; (3) ${NO_3}^-$-rich, type 3 waters (11%) which record significant anthropogenic pollution; and (4) type 4 waters (30%) enriched in both $Cl^{-}$ and ${NO_3}^-$, reflecting the effects of both seawater mixing and anthropogenic contamination. The results of the water type classification correspond well with the grouping on a Piper's diagram. On a Br x $10^4$versus Cl molar ratio diagram, most of type 2 waters are also plotted along or near the seawater mixing line. The discriminant analysis of hydrochemical data also shows that the classification of waters into four types are so realistic to adequately reflect the major process(es) proposed for the hydrochemical evolution of each water type. As a tool for evaluating the degree of seawater mixing, we propose a parameter called 'Seawater Mixing Index (S.M.I.)’ which is based on the concentrations of Na, Mg, Cl, and $SO_4$. All the type 1 and 3 waters have the S.M.I. values smaller than one, while type 2 and type 4 waters mostly have the values greater than 1. In the western coastal area of Korea, more than 21% of shallow groundwaters appear to be more or less affected by salinization process.

It is easy for a ship passing through confined waters to be exposed in dangers of collisions and grounding due to different hydrodynamic responses. Since marine accidents can cause significant impacts on environments, global economy, and human lives, it is necessary to study the effect of shallow water on hydrodynamic performance of a ship. In this paper, the effect of water depth on resistance performance was investigated using CFD analysis as an initial study for improving navigational safety of a large container ship under confined waters. After a CFD set-up for deep water condition was validated and verified by comparing CFD analysis with model test results, CFD calculations according to ship speed and water depth were conducted. The features were investigated in terms of tendency and physical knowledge related to resistance performance. The increase of resistance due to shallow water effect was reviewed with empirical formula suggested from SWABE JIP. Speed loss due to shallow water effect was additionally reviewed from estimated delivered power according to ship speed and water depth.
The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of using stable isotopes as a hydrologic tracer, and to elucidate the groundwater circulation system and the source of S component dissolved in thermal water of the Chonju Jukrim thermal spring district based on the O, H and S isotopic variabilities of environmental materials including bedrock, rainwater, surface water, shallow subsurface water and thermal spring water. The ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}D$ of subsurface waters and surface water show highly restricted range and plotted on the same meteoric water line as a ${\delta}D=8{\delta}^{18}O+19$ line, and derivate from the mean annual isotopic composition of the rain water but are analogous to those of rain waters precipitated during winter season, indicating that ground waters are originated from the meteoric water and are strongly affected by the seasonal variation of air mass. Thermal spring waters are more depleted in ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}D$ than those of shallow ground water and surface water. It can be explained by the difference of recharge area. The hydrochemical properties of subsurface waters and surface water devide into two groups: $Ca(HCO_3)_2$ type including shallow subsurface water and surface water, and $Na(HCO_3)$ type of thermal spring waters. The ${\delta}^{34}S$ values of thermal spring water show very high positive and quitely distinct from those of shallow subsurface water and surface water that are similar to those of bed rocks, indicating that sulfate dissolved in thermal spring water has not only a terrigenic origin, but also originates partially from the foreign source containing very heavy ${\delta}^{34}S$ component such as an ancient sea water. However, the presence of $H_2S$ can not be ignore the affact of the isotopic fractionation to explaine the heavy ${\delta}^{34}S$ of thermal spring water. Overall, the Oxygen and Hydrogen stable isotopes can identify the source and the circulation system of the natural waters and the S-isotopes can provide a crucial clue on tracing the dissolved material transports in the circulation system of the natural water.
The purpose of this study is to identify the temporal and spatial variation of stable isotopic compositions of surface waters and shallow ground waters at a local watershed(100$Km^2$) near the Muju area. For oxygen and hydrogen isotope analysis, water samples were collected from 19-22 sites during August, October 2001, through April 2002. Seasonal variation in the isotopic compositions of surface waters was clearly shown. However, the degree of such isotopic variation was highly attenuated in shallow ground waters because of mixing with preexisting ground waters. Isotope values of surface waters and ground waters were very similar in each season, indicating that precipitation/ground water/surface water interactions were very active and continuous in the watershed. Stable isotopic ratios of surface waters in the study area were lighter than those of the downstream reach of Geum River on south, indicating “latitude effect”. Both “altitude effect” and “amount effect” were also shown in the stable isotopic ratios of surface waters in the study area as well as seasonal variation of stable isotopes.
The water-rock interaction and anthropogenic contamination affecting to geochemical composition of shallow and deep groundwaters were investigated in the agricultural area of Myunggok-ri, Kongju. The shallow groundwater is classified into the chemical types of $Ca-HCO_3$ and $Ca-Cl(SO_4)$ and shows weak acid having an average pH 6.2. Deep groundwater shows the uncontaminated composition of the chemical types of $Na-HCO_3$ and Na $(Ca)-HCO_3$ with pH of 8.4~8.8. The grouping approach of chemical data of waters shows the distinguished trend between water composition influenced anthrophogenic input and water composition mainly determined by natural process such as water-rock interaction. The main anthropogenic inputs affecting chemical composition of shallow groundwater are the contaminants such as $K^+$, $NO_3{^-}$, $Cl^-$ having average values of 4.4 mg/l, 22 mg/l, 13.7 mg/l, respectively. The contaminants were probably derived from fertilizer, sweage, septic tank, and stable, etc. The hydrogen and oxygen isotopic compositions indicate that five deep groundwaters were recharged from different altitudes, and that shallow and deep groundwaters were originated from meteoric water. Tritium contents of waters suggest that deep groundwater was recharged before or just after 1950s, and that shallow groundwater is much younger than deep groundwater. The results of this study may serve as a basic data for the future study of shallow groundwater as a drinking water in agricultural area, in Korea.

This paper - following 'Development of multi-purpose marine waste cleaning systems for the shallow waters (Part I : preliminary conceptual design)'- describes on the system development and the sea trial performance evaluation(Cho[2003]). The multi-functional seabed waste collecting system and the towing hook system were developed. The maximum working depth of these systems are 15 and 100 meters, respectively(MOMAF[2001]). For the multi-purpose use to collect the marine waste, this system contains floating waste collecting device for the waste on seawater and remained waste collecting device for the waste on seabed, while steel wire cutting system is added for higher efficiency In order to evaluate the system performance, the prototype of multi-functional system was constructed and the sea trial test at shallow water were carried out. As a result, this system operated well with safe and without any interaction so that the developed systems are practicable and applicable.
Seasonal variation of the fishery resource in the shallow waters of Ganghwado tidal flat was investigated using monthly collected samples with a fence net from June 1998 to May 1999. Thirty-six species were found including 27 fish species, 6 crustaceans, and 3 molluscs. Of the fish, Konosirus punctatus, Sardinella zunasi Liza haematocheila and Synechogobius hasta dominated in the number of individuals $(92.1\%)$ and in biomass $(94.5\%).$ A few number of resident species, such as L. haematocheila and S. hasta, were collected only during the cold months. As the water temperature increased in the spring, the adult migratory fish such as K. punctatus and S. zunasi, were collected. In the summer, the juvenile fish recruited in the shallow water showing a peak in fish abundance. The data suggested that they grew until late autumn before moving to deeper waters for over-wintering. The principal component analysis showed that the seasonal variation in species composition was principally determined by water temperature and/or water temperature related factors. The species composition of the fish assemblage in the study area suggested that these species are highly adapted to extreme seasonal temperature variation and high water turbidity.
