  • The objective of this study is to collect basic data about sex bias in intrahousehold food distribution, by investigating 124 housekeepers living in Seoul . This Survey was performed using questionnaire about the experience of male-female dietary disparity and the attitudes about sex-differential nutrition Results were summarized as follows ; 1. 38% of housekeepers had been experienced in male-female disparity of food distribution at meal time in her childhood. Protein foods(meats & fishes) and special foods were not distributed evenly to both sexes. 2. The major causes of these unbalanced, sex-differential food distribution was rather masculine priority than food shortage. 3. Compared with the past, male-female dietary disparity was disappeared. However, 47.7% of housekeepers took more care for son's meals than daughter's, consciously or unconsciously.

  • This research was attempted to investigate the sex bias in nutrition knowledge, food preference and food roles in the family. 152 couples living in Seoul, Cheonan in the 205∼605 were selected for this research as subjects from October 1 to December 20, 1991. The data analysis was made by way of ire quency, percentage, X2-test using SPSS package. The summarized results are as follows. 1. The survey on the sex bias in nutrition knowledge related heart disease on the subjects showed that there were no significant differences between men and women. But women had a relatively good nutrition knowledge than men. Especially women had a good nutrition knowledge that low sodium diet and exercise are efficient on preventing heart disease. 2. On the food preference, the subject showed significant difference between men and women. Men showed a relatively highest preference for protein food just as pork, fish, and tofu. Women showed a relatively highest preference for bread, fruit and vegetable. 3. On the food roles, the subjects showed that gender difference in household labor regarding food preparation still exit. Food-related activities are clearly still the domain of women in most families. Husbands and wives in younger families tended to think the husbands showed increase their efforts in food related activities.

  • Estimates of genetic correlation between direct and maternal effects for weaning weight of beef cattle are often negative in field data. The biological existence of this genetic antagonism has been the point at issue. Some researchers perceived such negative estimate to be an artifact from poor modeling. Recent studies on sources affecting the genetic correlation estimates are reviewed in this article. They focus on heterogeneity of the correlation by sex, selection bias caused from selective reporting, selection bias caused from splitting data by sex, sire by year interaction variance, and sire misidentification and inbreeding depression as factors contributing sire by year interaction variance. A biological justification of the genetic antagonism is also discussed. It is proposed to include the direct-maternal genetic covariance in the analytical models.

  • The purpose of present study is to investigate what is the most important factor among personality, social relation perception, and cultural influence on North Korean Defectors' self-enhancement bias, and how their self-enhancement bias influences on their psychological adaptation in South Korea. To implement this, we compared the self-enhancement bias of South Korean undergraduates and North Korean Defector undergraduates, and social desirability, too. However, there was no significant result. Based on this outcome, we focused on 121 North Korean Defectors' self-enhancement bias mechanism. We found that personality and social relation perception factors influenced significantly on their self- enhancement bias and furthermore their self-enhancement bias affected on their psychological adaptation. In addition to this, we identified sex difference at this mechanism. That is, women showed the same pattern with the existing findings in the study of self-enhancement bias mechanism, but men showed somewhat different pattern.

  • Purpose: Despite the proliferation of numerous morphometric and anthropometric methods for sex identification based on linear, angular, and regional measurements of various parts of the body, these methods are subject to error due to the observer's knowledge and expertise. This study aimed to explore the possibility of automated sex determination using convolutional neural networks(CNNs) based on lateral cephalometric radiographs. Materials and Methods: Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 1,476 Iranian subjects (794 women and 682 men) from 18 to 49 years of age were included. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were considered as a network input and output layer including 2 classes(male and female). Eighty percent of the data was used as a training set and the rest as a test set. Hyperparameter tuning of each network was done after preprocessing and data augmentation steps. The predictive performance of different architectures (DenseNet, ResNet, and VGG) was evaluated based on their accuracy in test sets. Results: The CNN based on the DenseNet121 architecture, with an overall accuracy of 90%, had the best predictive power in sex determination. The prediction accuracy of this model was almost equal for men and women. Furthermore, with all architectures, the use of transfer learning improved predictive performance. Conclusion: The results confirmed that a CNN could predict a person's sex with high accuracy. This prediction was independent of human bias because feature extraction was done automatically. However, for more accurate sex determination on a wider scale, further studies with larger sample sizes are desirable.

  • Despite the importance of sexual life of the aged, it is almost disregarded due to the Confucius value system and bias. The common people's view on the sex of the aged was clearly demonstrated by their attitude toward a movie entitled "I love it though I might die" which was determined "18 Age over"being awareness of its explicit sexual intercourse and several lied on the discussion. For this reason, the sex of the aged is clandestinely revealed and uses to receive publicity for sexual assault for children, sexual crime, and illegal prostitution in parks. And social atmosphere that prevents open discussion of the sexof the aged increases in the number of suffering aged in reality, and it causes the decrease of life quality of them. In this circumstance, cartoon contents can be perfectly used for sex education for them. Entertainment character and genre character of cartoon contents can deliver the understanding of sex rather voluntarily and easily to the aged and it can be used as a tool to motivate by indirect experience and to enhance efficient understanding.

  • Scelionid eggParasitoids Play an important role in biological control of some economically important pentatomids. Stink bug (Canthecona furcellatta Wolff,) is an important predator of Tasar silkworm larvae (Antheraea mylitta D.) and causes 30-40 percent loss in tasar silk industry. Psix striaticeps (Scelionid: Hymenoptera) has been found to be an important egg parasitoid. The parasitization potential of f striaticeps is mere than 60 percent and the sex ratio is female oriented. Studies indicate that the maintenance of existing scelionid population by avoiding harmful practices and the augmentation of scelionids either directly releasing them in the field or by indirectly making the field environment more favorable for them is an important aspect to control the pentatomid population in sericulture. Female bias sex ratio is advantageous to increase the parasitoid population in the field. 24-hour-old egg of stink bug and one-day old parasitoid is suitable for producing maximum progeny. 1 : 30 of parasitoid: host ratio is needed to regulate the estimated population in silkworm rearing field.

  • To understand the effect of prenatal stress on sex-specific changes in embryonic and placental growth, a synthetic glucocorticoid (dexamethasone) was administered intraperitoneally at a dosage of 1 mg/kg body weight (BW) (Dex1) or 10 mg/kg BW (Dex10) to pregnant ICR mice at the gestational days 7.5, 8.5 and 9.5 post coitum (p.c.). Embryos and placentas were then harvested at days 11.5 and 18.5 p.c., and their body weight and size were measured following the determination of sex through PCR using Sry specific primers in tail tissues. As a result, female embryos presented reduced fetal body weight and size in Dex1- and Dex10-treated groups than those of control group at the embryonic day 11.5 p.c. Interestingly, the growth seems to be recovered at day 18.5 as there was no difference in growth between control and dexamethasone treated groups. In the case of males, Dex1 induced a decrease in fetal weight in day 11.5 and this pattern was maintained until day 18.5, whereas their growth was not affected by Dex10 treatment. Placental growth showed similar patterns to fetal growth in both sexes but the extent of reduction was not statistically significant in most cases. Placental weights in Dex1- and Dex10-treated group were decreased significantly in male only. The results imply that the effect of prenatal stress is largely sex dependent due to different strategies for growth and survival in a stressful environment.

  • Total number of 237 Hanwoos were purchased from the nationwide fanns based on the different market weights and sex. After slaughtering, they were evaluated to estimate the productivity of carcass components by the sex and market weight, and to predict the beef carcass yield grade equation. The main results in this study were summarized as follows; With respect to carcass characteristics, the yield percentages were different(P < 0.01) among sex groups, but were not different among market weight groups. Sex or market weights showed significant effects on the carcass yield grade(YG) factors(BFT, RA, carcass weight(CW). The YG equation from this study could be expressed as a multiple regression y = 64.74 - 0.0198 ${\times}$ CW(kg) - 5.226 $\time$ BFT(cm)+0.1339 $\time$ RA($cm^2$ $R^2$ = 0.52 Among the YG factors, the BFT was the highest contributor to the YG equation. Compared the previous equation reported in 1992 with the equation from this study, the bias values between predicted value and the actual cutability were 9.17 and 2.39, respectively. In conclusion, the equation estimated from this study was more accurate in predicting the cutability than that from the previous equation reported in 1992.
