  • The standards pertaining to the quality of discharged water in sewage treatment plants are strengthening, and accordingly, facilities in sewage treatment plants are being upgraded. In addition, the discharge water quality of sewage treatment plants must be maintained at a high level, and efficient sewage treatment plant operations have thus emerged as a very important issue. For the efficient operation of sewage treatment plants, this study applied a basic blowing amount calculation method based on sewage facilities to evaluate the required oxygen amount and blowing amount according to inflow water quality by logicizing various influencing factors. As a result of calculating the amount of air blown by applying actual April water quality data from sewage treatment plant A to the blower demand calculation developed through this study, it was found that the average amount of air blown was reduced by about 12%. When the blower demand calculation developed here is applied to an actual sewage treatment plant, the amount of air blown can be controlled based on the inflow water quality. This can facilitate the realization of an autonomous control of sewage treatment plants, in contrast to the existing sewage treatment operation method that relies on operational experience of operator. In addition, it is expected that efficient sewage treatment plants can be operated by reducing blowing amounts and power costs, which will contribute to both energy and carbon savings.

  • It is difficult to use average sewage water quality as a design parameter for the individual sewage wastewater treatment plant(ISWTP), because sewage water quality is very various according to the building use type. So, in this study, we estimated daily, seasonal and weekly trend of sewage water quality and flow rate in various kind of building to comprehend operating state of ISWTP. The sewage water quality and flow rate were higher in the business building than household building. The seasonal difference of the water quality was not detected but that of flow rate was high. The flow rate of the sewage in the business building was higher in summer than in other seasons and in weekend than in weekday. The treatment efficiency of IWSTP was about $70{\sim}80%$ with BOD, $40{\sim}50%$ with TN and TP, which was very low. The unit loads of the individual house were 36.05 gpcd with BOD, 37.91 gpcd with SS, 23.91 gpcd with T-N, and 7.90 gpcd with T-P respectively, and those values were higher than other studies. It is because, as distinct from other studies, sewage water quality was monitored at the inlet point of the IWSTP in this study. We can use this results as an one of basic parameters for the design of IWSTP.

  • Since the diffusion rate of sewage treatment plant is about 30% of the country. It is not enough to cope with entire sewage treatment of the community. Therefore, the septic tank is introduced which is connected with water flush toilet only. It is estimated that the large portion of water pollution has occured due to untreated sewage such as pollutants of kitchen, laundry and bathtub water, etc., which are not go through the existing septic tank. However, the construction of community plant which is could treat most of household run sewage should have flexibility in type, treatment method, effectiveness and economy which are adoption of the community. Without the treatment of combined household run sewage, the improvement of water pollution will be hardly expected.

  • Most of the sewage treatment plants in Korea are being operated by using the conventional activated sludge process. Recently, as the water criteria have been strict with regard to such main culprits of eutrophication, the existing sewage treatment plants are obliged to upgrade their treatment technology to meet the criteria. Under such circumstances, this study was aimed at analyzing the conditions of an existing sewage treatment plants in Korea, and thereupon, test its treatment performance for the actual sewage water by operating a pilot plant. When the pilot plant was operated with the NPR process at the capacity of $30m^3/day$, the average contents of BOD, $COD_{Mn}$, SS, T-N and T-P in the effluents were 7.0 mg/L, 9.7 mg/L, 5.1 mg/L, 8.0 mg/L and 0.23 mg/L, respectively, which were very stable in general. Accordingly, if the NPR process used for this pilot plant to upgrade the treatment technology for the sewage treatment plat could be adopted, the effluent water quality criteria effective beginning from 2008 would be met.

  • Integrated watershed sewage works program(IWSWP) is defined as implementing, by one of local governments or central government, sewage facilities planning, installation and management for a certain watershed in which criteria of water quality is established and two or more local governments are involved. It is shown that IWSWP is more efficient for the improvement of water quality of water body than conventional local sewage works program(CLSWP) and besides, economical benefits can be achieved by integration of facilities and M&O. In this research, case study for 8 watershed area were investigated to evaluate the difference of effect between IWSWP and CLSWP. The research shows that IWSWP has the money saving result of approximately 12 % by cost reduction for sewage works investment. B/C analysis result shows that B/C ratio of IWSWP was 1.749 and it is higher than B/C ratio of 1.439 for CLSWP. At the same time, the B/C sensitivity analysis is carried out for the rate of discount and the recreational use benefit.

  • This paper describes the effects of sewage amount, temperature, and years in operation on the infiltration rate of a sewage disposal system. The self-purifying sewage disposal system, which is typically used in rural areas, consists of reeds and fine gravel. Water plants are planted on the gravel bed which provides the habitat for microbes. The basic process is that the gravel bed filters incoming sewage. Thus this system requires the smooth flow of sewage through the gravel. However, the efficiency of the disposal system will be lowered if the gravel bed is clogged with sewage sludge. A three year study shows that infiltration rate slows down significantly until the 7th day, depending on the sewage amount and the temperature. After the 7th day, the infiltration rate remains almost constant. In addition, the infiltration rate decreases as the temperature falls. It also decreases as the number of years in operation increase. But there is no significant change in the infiltration rate after the 7th day, independent of the temperature, the sewage amount, and years in operation. In order to take advantage of high infiltration rate, which improves the efficiency of the disposal system in its early stages, having two gravel beds and using them alternatively will be efficient. This operation method is called intermittent load and makes the disposal system last longer. The water plant roots above the gravel bed make the effective filtration possible because they delay accumulation of the sewage sludge and stabilize the filtration ability.

  • In this study, the sewage sludge dryer is installed before and after dehydration of the sludge and aqueous phase composition, the heavy metal content, and measurement and analysis were investigated. The removal efficiency of water content of sewage sludge was about 95.7% in the sewage sludge dryer. The removal efficiency of water content for primary dryer was designed for 35% of primary drying, secondary drying to remove the water content to 10%, but as the measurement revealed that 20.8% of primary drying, the second dryer 3.3% a better effect to the actual operation respectively. Before the installation of the sewage sludge dryer, the content of heavy metal was as follows, Cu:352~614 ppm, Hg: 1.3~1.44ppm, Cd : 1.1~1.86ppm, Pb : 17.25~ 28.93 ppm, As : 1ppm. And after the installation of the sewage sludge dryer, the content of heavy metal changed to as follows, Cu : 340~350 ppm, Hg : 0 ppm, Cd : 0~0.021 ppm, Pb : 0 ppm, As : 0~0.043 ppm which is Also below the legal limits. Also, the sewage sludge dryer produce 1/4 of the sewage sludge into dried sludge.

  • Effect of reclaimed sewage on the paddy rice culture was examined by field experiment for two consecutive years. The domestic sewage was treated by the constructed wetland and the effluent of the treatment wetland was used for irrigation water. The reclaimed sewage was diluted before irrigation in the first year and it was used without dilution in the second year experiment. Growth components and yields were compared against the control plot where conventional method was applied. And also soil characteristics of the plots before and after reclaimed sewage irrigation were analyzed Generally addition of the reclaimed sewage irrigation didn't affect paddy rice culture adversely and even enhancement was observed. Fertilization was thought to be important factor for rice culture rather than irrigation water quality. Conventional fertilization and reclaimed sewage irrigation which contained high nutrient concentration resulted in better growth and more yield. Unlike widespread concern lodging did not happen even in the case of irrigation with average 90mg/L of T-N and conventional fertilization. Soil characteristics changed after irrigation and significant EC increasing was observed for the reclaimed sewage irrigation plots. From soil analyses salt accumulation could be a more potential problem than nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus in the use of reclaimed sewage irrigation. Overall reclaimed sewage irrigation was thought to be one of practical alternatives for the ultimate disposal of sewage in rural area.

  • The effects of municipal sewage treatment plants on the water quality and effluent loading were investigated. BOD removal rates from Wonju, Hoengseong, and Hongcheon municipal sewage treatment plants were $88.9\%,\;80.6\%,\;90.7\%$ and T-P removal rates were $47.3\%,\;56.5\%,\;71.6\%,$ respectively. Also, BOD effluent leading from WonJu, Hoengseong, and Hongcheon treatment plants were 1,520 kg/day, 75 kg/day, 55 kg/day and T-P effluent loading were 203.9 kg/day, 4.2 kg/day, 4.0 kg/day, respectively. In terms of water quality distribution by distance of flow, BOD of the Seom river rapidly rose from 1.6 mg/l to 4.0 mg/l and T-P rose from 0.034 mg/l to 0.321 mg/l. Also BOD of the Hongcheon river showed a slowly rise from 1.1 mg/l to 1.4 mg/l and T-P from 0.011 mg/l to 0.026 mg/l. In conclusion, the effects of municipal sewage treatment plants on the water quality proved that T-P was higher than BOD. Consequently, in order to improve water quality, it is necessary to adopt an advanced sewage treatment system like nutrient removal.
