  • In the recent TROI experiments, melts of zirconia and two different compositions of corium were used to observe the occurrence of a steam explosion when it came into contact with water at two different depths. The compositions of the corium were 70 : 30 and 80 : 20 in weight percent of $UO_{2}$ and $ZrO_{2}$, and the mass of the corium was about 10kg. The depth of water in the interaction vessel was 67cm and 130cm. A steam explosion did not occur in the interaction between 80 : 20 corium melt and water at 130cm depth, while steam spikes were observed in the interactions between corium melts of two different compositions and water at 67cm depth. A strong steam explosion occurred in the interaction between 5.43kg of zirconia melt and water at 67cm depth. This fact shows that the explosivity of zirconia is much greater than that of corium.

  • Under severe accidents, the pressure and temperature response has an important role for the integrity of a nuclear power plant containment. The history of the pressure and temperature is characterized by the amount and state of steam/air mixture in a containment. Recently, the heat transfer rate to the structure surface is supposed to be increased by the wavy interface formed on condensate film. However, in the calculation by using CONTAIN code, the condensation heat transfer on a containment wall is calculated by assuming the smooth interface and has a tendency to be underestimated for safety. In order to obtain the best- estimate heat transfer calculation, we investigated the condensation heat transfer model in CONTAIN 1.2 code and adopted the new forced convection correlation which is considering wavy interface. By using the film tracking model in CONTAIN 1.2 code, the condensate film is treated to consider the effect of wavy interface. And also, it was carried out to investigate the effect of the different cell modelings - 5-cell and 10-cell modeling - for KNGR(Korean Next Generation Reactor) containment phenomena during a severe accident. The effect of wavy interface on condensate film appears to cause the decrease of peak temperature and pressure response . In order to obtain more adequate results, the proper cell modeling was required to consider the proper flow of steam/air mixture.

  • During severe nuclear power plant (NPP) accidents, a H2/CO mixture can be generated in the reactor pressure vessel by core degradation and in the containment as well by molten corium-concrete interaction. In spite of its importance, a state-of-the-art methodology predicting H2/CO combustion risk relies predominantly on empirical correlations. It is therefore necessary to develop a proper methodology for flammability evaluation of H2/CO mixtures at ex-vessel phases characterized by three factors: CO concentration, high temperature, and diluents. The developed methodology adopted Le Chatelier's law and a calculated non-adiabatic flame temperature model. The methodology allows the consideration of the individual effect of the heat transfer characteristics of hydrogen and carbon monoxide on low flammability limit prediction. The accuracy of the developed model was verified using experimental data relevant to ex-vessel phase conditions. With the developed model, the prediction accuracy was improved substantially such that the maximum relative prediction error was approximately 25% while the existing methodology showed a 76% error. The developed methodology is expected to be applicable for flammability evaluation in chemical as well as NPP industries.

  • The two-fluid equations are widely used to simulate two-phase flows in a nuclear reactor. For the two-fluid momentum equation, the wall and interfacial drag terms play an important role in predicting a two-phase flow behavior. Since the bubble density is much smaller than the water density, the bubble accelerates faster than the liquid in a nozzle. As a result, the bubble phase becomes faster than the liquid phase in the nozzle. In contrast, the opposite phenomena occur in the diffuser. The purpose of our study is to experimentally show these behaviors in an area-varying channel such as nozzle and diffuser. Experiments were made of turbulent bubbly flows in an area-varying horizontal channel. The velocities of the bubble and liquid phases were measured by the PIV technique. It was shown that the two-phase velocities were no longer close to each other in the area-varying regions. The bubble was faster than the liquid in the nozzle; in contrast, the bubble was slower than the liquid in the diffuser. Code simulations were also performed using the MARS code. By replacing the original wall drag model in the MARS code with Kim (1)'s wall drag partition model, we obtained the simulation results being consistent with experimental observations.

  • In this paper, range measurement performance of LRF (Laser Range Finder) module and image contrast of color CCD camera are evaluated under the aerosol (high temperature steam) environments, which are simulated severe accident conditions of the LWR (Light-Water-Reactor) nuclear power plant. Data of LRF and color CCD camera are key informations, which are needed in the implementation of SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) function for emergency response robot system to cope with urgently accidents of the nuclear power plant.

  • Feasibility study has been accomplished to evaluate the effectiveness of the in-vessel core debris cooling through lower cavity flooding using two dimensional finite difference scheme. The volume of cerium pool and decay power rate generated in corium pool were evaluated as important parameters to the temperature distribution on the reactor vessel lower head through previous works. In this study, the corium volume based on the System 80+ core structure and time dependent decay power rate are considered for feasibility evaluation. In addition, preliminary plans for the in-vessel core debris cooling through lower cavity flooding as severe accident management strategy, i.e. flooding timing, method and capacity, are suggested based on the result of the numerical study, international tendency related to in-vessel core debris cooling through lower cavity flooding.

  • The conceptual design of Korea Next Generation Reactor (KNGR), which is 3914 MWt PWR, includes the safety depressurization system (SDS) to comply with U.S. NRC's severe accident policy. In this analysis, it is assumed that three Monobloc Sebim valves are adopted for the SDS bleed valves of KNGR. The characteristic of Monobloc Sebim are modeled in the CE-FLASH-4AS/REM code for this analysis. The various feed and bleed (F&B) procedures with Sebim valves are investigated for total loss of feedwater (TLOFW) event. It is found that if operators open two out of three Sebim valves in conjunction with four HPSI pumps before hot leg temperature reaches saturation condition, the decay heat removal and core inventory make-up function can be successfully accomplished. Therefore, this F&B procedure can be used for mitigating the TLOFW event of the KNGR. This result also demonstrates the feasibility of adopting the Monobloc Sebim valves for the SDS of KNGR.

  • We investigated the heat load imposed on the lower head of a reactor vessel by the natural convection of the oxide pool in a severe accident. Mass transfer experiments using a $CuSO_4-H_2SO_4$ electroplating system were performed based on the analogy between heat and mass transfer. The $Ra^{\prime}_H$ of $10^{14}$ order was achieved with a facility height of only 0.1 m. Three different volumetric heat sources were compared; two had identical configurations to those previously reported, and the other was designed by the authors. The measured Nu's of the lower head were about 30% lower than those previously reported. The measured angular heat flux ratios were similar to those reported in existing studies except for the peaks appearing near the top. The volumetric heat sources did not affect the Nu of the lower head but affected the Nu of the top plate by obstructing the rising flow from the bottom.

  • This paper describes recent development activities of the GENESIS code, which is a transport code for heterogeneous three-dimensional geometry, focusing on applications to reactor core analysis. For the treatment of anisotropic scattering, the concept of the simplified Pn method is introduced in order to reduce storage of flux moments. The accuracy of the present method is verified through a benchmark problem. Next, the iteration stability of the GENESIS code for the highly voided condition, which would appear in a severe accident (e.g., design extension) conditions, is discussed. The efficiencies of the coarse mesh finite difference and generalized coarse mesh rebalance acceleration methods are verified with various stabilization techniques. Use of the effective diffusion coefficient and the artificial grid diffusion coefficients are found to be effective to stabilize the acceleration calculation in highly voided conditions.
