  • The southwestern Australian frog Crinia georgiana (Anura; Myobatrachidae) inhabits ephemeral pools in which the tadpoles often face desiccation. Under these conditions selection on tadpoles can be severe and can directly affect fitness during the aquatic as well as the terrestrial developmental stages. A quantitative genetic study using a half-sib breeding design was conducted to understand the genetic effects on larval life-history traits. We found no significant additive genetic variance in any of larval traits. Except for hatching period, heritability estimates based on females were high in egg size, larval period, snout-vent length, and weight at metamorphosis, suggesting non-additive genetic effects. These results indicate that any response to selection during hatching and larval periods should be predominately governed by non-additive genetic effects in C. georgiana.

  • Hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) is one of the hydrogen degradation phenomena of linepipe steels caused by $H_2S$ gas in the crude oil or natural gas. However, NACE TM0284-96 standard HIC test method is hard to satisfy the steel requirements for sour service application since it uses more severe environmental conditions than actual conditions. Therefore, in order to use steels effectively, it is required to evaluate HIC resistance of steels in the practical range of environmental severity. In this study, HIC resistance of two high strength low alloy (HSLA) steels being used as line pipe steels was evaluated in various test solutions with different $H_2S$ pressures and pH values. The results showed that the key parameter affecting crack area ratio (CAR) is $H_2S$ partial pressure of test solution when the pH value of test solution is not over 4. Hydrogen diffusivity was not a constant value, but it was rather affected by the hydrogen ion concentration (pH value) in the solution.

  • In recent years steel-concrete composite shear walls have been widely used in enormous high-rise buildings. Due to high strength and ductility, enhanced stiffness, stable cycle characteristics and large energy absorption, such walls can be adopted in the auxiliary building; surrounding the reactor containment structure of nuclear power plants to resist lateral forces induced by heavy winds and severe earthquakes. This paper demonstrates a set of nonlinear numerical studies on I-shaped composite steel-concrete shear walls of the nuclear power plants subjected to reverse cyclic loading. A three-dimensional finite element model is developed using ABAQUS by emphasizing on constitutive material modeling and element type to represent the real physical behavior of complex shear wall structures. The analysis escalates with parametric variation in steel thickness sandwiching the stipulated amount of concrete panels. Modeling details of structural components, contact conditions between steel and concrete, associated boundary conditions and constitutive relationships for the cyclic loading are explained. Later, the load versus displacement curves, peak load and ultimate strength values, hysteretic characteristics and deflection profiles are verified with experimental data. The convergence of the numerical outcomes has been discussed to conclude the remarks.

  • It is well known that the development of Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) is very important for the automotive industry in order to improve fuel efficiency and the reduction of material costs. However, it is particularly difficult to improve the surface quality of AHSS because the high amount of Si, Al, Mn and Ti etc. in AHSS promote selective oxidation, resulting in surface defects. The reheating process in the hot strip mill would cause severe oxidation because it is carried out at elevated temperatures under aggressive environments. In this study a reheating furnace simulator was developed to investigate oxidation phenomena in the reheating process. The environmental gas for the reheating furnace was made by burning coke oven gas with air in the simulator. The air/fuel ratio is precisely controlled by MFC. Ti oxides are easily formed on grain boundaries and Mn and Si oxides are usually formed in inner grains near the steel surface with a small round shape.

  • Golden hamsters reproduce in a limited time of a year. Their sexual activities are active in summer but inactive in winter during which day length does not exceed night time and environmental conditions are severe to them. The reproductive activities are determined by the length of light in a day (photoperiod). Melatonin is synthesized and secreted only at night time from the pineal gland. Duration of elevated melatonin is longer in winter than summer, resulting in gonadal regression. The present study aimed at the influences of continuous melatonin treatments impinging on the gonadal function in male golden hamsters. Animals received empty or melatonin-filled capsules for 10 weeks. They were divided into long photoperiod (LP) and short photoperiod (SP). All the animals maintained in LP (either empty or melatonin-filled capsules) showed large testes, implying that melatonin had no effects on testicular functions. Animals housed in SP displayed completely regressed testes. But animals kept in SP and implanted with melatonin capsules exhibited blockage of full regression by SP. These results suggest that constant release of melatonin prohibits the regressing influence of SP.

  • Naval equipments are installed and used for naval vessel with different environmental conditions comparing to the commercial vessel, for example, high engine power per ship displacement size, severe vibration and shock due to high running speed and explosion from naval gun's bombardment and underwater weapons. Therefore, those equipments must be installed on shipboard with small spaces, high ambient temperature around engine room and which are required be fabricated with high resistances of vibration, shock and heat resources. But in case of commercial vessel, the performances of their recent equipments naval have been improved continuously due to the technology development of domestic shipbuilding and shipboard equipment industries, together with the related fundamental industries i.e, metal, steel and electronic industries, to an international level since 1970. With these results, it became possible to unify the specifications of shipboard equipments for the commercial and military vessels(Dual-Use). In this study, vibration and shock test standards for the commercial and military vessels will be compared and reviewed technically.

  • Drought alters soil microorganisms; however, it is still not clear how soil microbes respond to severe drought conditions. In this study, the responses of soil bacterial community to experimental drought in a coniferous stand were examined. Six $6m{\times}6m$ plots with three replicates of control and drought treatments were delimited. PCR amplification and Illumina sequencing were conducted for cluster analysis of soil bacterial community and species richness and species diversity was analyzed. Along the 393 days of simulated drought from July 2016 to October 2017, soil bacterial species diversity slightly increased whereas species richness decreased in both control and roof plots. Moreover, soil bacterial species richness more decreased in roof plots than in controls. Combining these results, soil bacterial activity might have been altered by simulated drought.

  • The development of the oxidation, wear and corrosion resistant materials that could be used in severe environmental conditions is needed. The elementary technologies for surface modification include ion implantation and/or thin film coating. Furthermore, in order to develop ion implantation technique to the specimens with three-dimensional shapes, plasma-based ion implantation (PBII) techniques were investigated. As a result, it was found that the ion implantation and/or thin film coating used in this study were/was effective for improving the properties of materials, which include implantations of various kinds of ions into TiAl alloy, TiN films formed on surface of base material and coatings in high-temperature steam. The techniques proposed in this study provide useful information for all of the material systems required to use at elevated temperature. For the practical applications, several results will be presented along with laboratory test results.

  • The drought is one of the extreme natural disasters observed in any climate zone and it is due to the deficiency in moisture. The flash drought is identified recently as a subdivision of drought and it is an extreme event distinguished by sudden onset and rapid intensification of drought conditions with severe impacts. The main cause for the flash drought is coupled situation due to precipitation deficit and high evapotranspiration. Hence, heat waves plays major role in identification of flash drought. Therefore, this study focused on identifying changes in distribution of heat waves for Korean Peninsula. The daily maximum and minimum temperature data were used in this study. The heat wave, heat wave intensity and heat wave intensity index were derived. The results of the study would be an input for the future studies on identification of flash drought in Korean Peninsula.
