  • The purpose of this study was to develop on east-west nursing intervention program. This study was conducted to identify the effectiveness of using facial meridian points for massage nursing intervention on the recovery of facial paralysis for 46 patients (22 for experimental group). All had suffered from strokes, and were also admitted to the division of oriental medicine in K University Hospital. Method: Data was collected from February 1st to December 31st of 2000. This study used a quasi experimental, non-equivalent control group pre-test and post-test design. The recovery of facial paralysis was measured by the difference between left and right facial length, observation and self report on a seven point scale, and facial discomfort by a facial scale after 6-7 facial massages in a two week period. Data was analyzed using the SPSS package program with x2 and t test. Result: The result of this study are as follows; The experimental group who received the facial meridian massage showed higher scores in recovery of facial paralysis (t=2.72, p=.009), and a smaller difference between left and right facial strength than those in control group (t=2.26, p= .29). The discomfort of the facial area in the experimental and control group showed no significant differences. Conclusion: These findings indicate that a facial meridian points massage could be an effective nursing intervention to the recovery of facial paralysis. This study contributes in developing an east-west nursing intervention with the oriental meridian theory and western massage therapy.

  • The purposes of this study were to : a) examine the current foodservice management practices of twenty-one seniors centers in charge of hoke-delivered meal programs, b) evaluate the attitudes of one hundred and ten recipients of meal service program, and c) provide feedback for the efficient and effective foodservice management for the elderly. Statistical data analysis was completed using the SAS package program for descriptive analysis, T-test, and ANOVA. The results of quantitative analysis indicated that the costs of meals, containers and special foods were mostly dependent on the support from local government(Seoul city). The centers where the volunteers were over seventy five p ercent of the workers were frtty-eight percent and sixty-seven percent of the subjects in food preparation and food delivery to the homebound clients, respectively. Meal preparation and food purchasing were mainly practiced by social welfare worker. Standardized recipes were not developed and meal preparation was controlled under the cook' and volunteers' experiences. The survey results of recipients who participated the home-delivered meals program showed that the mean of meal satisfaction score was rated over three point five in the five-point scale. There were significant differences between dependent variables(volunteer's kindness, plate waste, menu variety) and independent variables(sex, receiving periods and family type of the subjects). • Global gene expression profile was analyzed by microarray analysis of rat liver RNA after acute acetaminophen (APAP) administration. A single dose of 1g/kg body weight of APAP was given orally, and the liver samples were obtained after 24, 48 h, and 2 weeks. Histopathologic and biochemical studies enabled the classification of the APAP effect into injury (24 and 48 h) and regeneration (2 weeks) stages. The expression levels of 4900 clones on a custom rat gene microarray were analyzed and 484 clones were differentially expressed with more than a 1.625-fold difference(which equals 0.7 in log2 scale) at one or more time points. Two hundred ninety seven clones were classified as injury-specific clones, while 149 clones as regeneration-specific ones. Characteristic gene expression profiles could be associated with APAP-induced gene expression changes in lipid metabolism, stress response, and protein metabolism. We established a global gene expression profile utilizing microarray analysis in rat liver upon acute APAP administration with a full chronological profile that not only covers injury stage but also later point of regeneration stage.

  • The impressions for odors are subjective and have individual differences. In this study, the Impressions of odors were investigated by covariance structure analysis. 46 subjects (men in their twenty) recorded their reactions to ten odorants by grading them on a seven-point scale in terms of twelve adjective pairs. Their reactions were quantified by using factor analysis and covariance structure analysis. The factors were extracted as "preference", "arousal" and "persistency". The subjects were classified into three groups according to the most suitable causal models (structural equation models). Each group had different causal relationship and different impression structure for odors. It was suggested that there is a possibility to evaluate the subjective impression of odor using covariance structure analysis.
