This study was to investigate the settling velocity which is an important factor for the prediction of cohesive deposition under the various densities of particle and dissolved ion addition$(Na^+,\;Cl^-,\;OH^-,\;H^+)$ in rivers, ports, reservoirs and lakes. Settling velocity of suspended fine particles in still water was measured with a pressure sensor (maximum 10 mbar). At the initial concentration of 20g/l of alumina and quartz the average settling velocities were high due to the aggregation behaviour of particles. At this point it was 0.185 mm/s (alumina) and 0.022 mm/s (quartz). Above this initial concentration it was on the decrease owing to the hindered settling. The higher the salinity is, the faster the settling velocity of alumina and quartz is. Furthermore, in an acid condition the average settling velocity of alumina was on the decrease. In an alkaline water, which causes strong flocculation, the average settling velocity of alumina it was observed on the increase. However, in an alkaline medium the low average settling velocity of quartz powder was measured.
When rivers and lakes are contaminated with numerous contaminants, usually the contaminants are finally deposited on the sediments of the waterbody. Many clean up technologies have been developed for the contaminated sediments. Among several technologies dredging is one of the best methods because dredging removes all the contaminated sediments from the water and the contaminated sediments can be completely treated with physical and chemical methods. However the most worried phenomenon is suspension of fine particles during the dredging process. The suspended particle can release contaminants into water and resulted in spread of the contaminants and the increase of risk due to the resuspension of the precipitated contaminants such as heavy metals and toxic organic compounds. Therefore the success of the dredging process depends on the prevention of resuspension of fine particles. Advanced dredging processes employ pumping the sediment with water onto a ship and release the turbid water pumped with sediment into waterbody after collection of sediment solids. Before release of the turbid water into lake or river, just a few minutes allowed to precipitate the suspended particle due to the limited area on a dredging ship. However the fine particle cannot be removed by the gravitational settling over a few minutes. Environmental technology such as coagulation and precipitation could be applied for the settling of fine particles. However, the process needs coagulants and big settling tanks. For the quick settling of the fine particles suspended during dredging process magnetic separation has been tested in current study. Magnetic force increased the settling velocity and the increased settling process can reduce the volume of settling tank usually located in a ship for dredging. The magnetic assisted settling also decreased the heavy metal release through the turbid water by precipitating highly contaminated particles with magnetic force.
For understanding sludge concentration profile as a function of time, sludge was sampled at each sampling port. When sludge concentration was 3g/L, the vertical sludge concentration distribution was similar to that of 2g/L of sludge concentration. During the early stage of sludge settling, sludge concentration increased remarkably as the sludge interface height in batch column became lower. The higher sludge concentration became, the worse sludge setteability became. Also, the type of sludge settling was influenced with sludge concentration gradient in batch column. In the same concentration, the greater sludge concentration gradient was, the faster sludge interface settled down. And the changing sludge concentrations in a batch settling or a continuous settling were simulated by using the equation of sludge interface height change model.

The settling rate of the dredged soil may vary with mineral composition, grain size distribution, initial con contration and salt concentration of suspension of the site. A series of settling column test was performed to investigate the settling rate characteristics of solid suspension material from dredging and reclamation. The settling rate of soil mixed with various size of particles depended on clay fraction which showed a inherent flux. A model was developed to predict the particle flux of mixed soil from the clay flux and its applicability was verified.
This paper has assessed the flow patterns and settling efficiency in the sedimentation basin using the particle tracking method of the CFD code and has reached the following conclusions: In the original design where no baffle is installed in the sedimentation basin, a large recirculating area where the flow stagnates is created in the right side of the sedimentation basin, with most of the particles moving to the left side of the sedimentation basin following the flow. This biased flow structure in the sedimentation basin reduces the residence time of particles and thereby undermines settling efficiency. The biased flow toward the left side of the sedimentation basin is alleviated by installing a baffle in the sedimentation basin, promptly reducing the fast flow of over 0.7 m/s in the inlet of the sedimentation basin to the rate below 0.2 m/s. In this paper's simulation conditions, if a one-sided baffle is to be installed in the sedimentation basin, placing it 15 meters away from the basin's inlet leads to the best settling efficiency; it has also been analyzed that installing a two-sided baffle-rather than a one-sided one-is a better option in terms of settling efficiency. The highest settling efficiency of 96.2% is achieved when the underwater length of the two-sided baffle is set at 8 meters.

Hydraulically filled ground is formed by the settling of soil grains from the mixture of soil grains and water. It was generally known that the settling speed of the soil grains in governed by Stokes low. In the case of clayed dredged material, the shape of soil grains is not round, the surface of the soil grains is relatively large compared to the weight of soil grains and inter-grain ionic force is relatively large compared to the wight of soil grains. By this reason the settling and consolidation behavior of hydraulically filled quite different from that of Stokes law. This study investigated the settling and consolidation behavior of hydraulically filled materials of Yeochon industrial complex by large scale laboratory settling & consolidation container. The test results showed tat actual settling speed of soil grains in quite large compared to that of Stokes law. It was turned out that this phenomenon was due to the aggregation of soil grains. Also, it was truned out that the void ration and water content after the completion of settling process was 8.7 and 322% respectively. The consolidtion settlement of clayey hydraulic fill material was predicated better by "incremental small strain" consolidation concept than classical Terzaghj's consolidation concept (infinitesimal strain).
PSD (particle size distribution) for 2,000 mg/$\ell$ natural loess in seawater showed normal distribution cure at 0 minute settling time, accompanying with very large particle distribution range with its mean particle diameter of 31.6 $\mu$m and coencient of variance of $72.6\%$, With elapsed time it showed that the PSD was rapidly changed from normal distribution cure to abnormal distribution curve, steepened the right-hand side of it and its coefficient of variance was getting increased because of rapid settling of large size particles, Cumulative weight distribution showed that 2,000 mg/$\ell$ natural loess in seawater was almost $100\%$ constituted of particles bigger than 20 $\mu$m in diameter. Ratio of $V_s/(D_{bm})^{1/2}$ for loess particles in seawater was increased with increase of particle size in geometrical progression. Almost all loess particles in seawater had Stokes settling velocity not less than 2,255 times of Brownian diffusion coefficient, There was almost to EDL (about 0.4 nm) around natural loess particles in seawater, Thus, there was always LVDW attractive force between loess particles approaching each other in seawater, and almost no EDL repulsive force. Loess particles were not always in the condition of easy floe formation. Concentration of natural loess in seawater increasing from 400 mg/$\ell$ to 10,000 mg/$\ell$, characteristics of the settling was changed from Type I settling (discrete settling) to Type II settling (flocculation settling). PVD (particle volume distribution) showed that natural loess particles in seawater were largely constituted of two types of particles, such as rapidly settling particles and suspended and dispersed particles for a long time. Amount of the latter was much less than that of the former.

The purpose of this study is to quantitatively estimate the settling property for fine-cohesive sediments in Keum Estuary and to evaluate the spatial variation by analyzing and comparing the local and seasonal variation of the settling properties in Keum Estuary with that of the settling properties in the other sites. After the spatial variation of physico-chemical properties such grain size distribution, the percentage of organic contents, mineralogical composition etc is investigated through experiments and analyses, interrelation between the physico-chemical properties and settling velocities and effect that the physico-chemical properties have on the quantitative variation of settling velocities were also analyzed in this study. Experimental results of settling tests shows that settling velocities of Keum Estuary mud vary in the range of two orders of magnitude (from 0.01 to 1mm/sec) over the corresponding concentration range of 0.1 to 80 g/L, and a feature of settling velocity profile is quite different in quantity as compared to those of previous studies with mud of other regions: Saemankuem, Tampa Bay, Sevem Estuary and lake Okeechobee. However, their local and seasonal variabilities within Keum Estuary appear to be insignificant.
This study aimed to evaluate changes in the TN and TP removal efficiencies, depending on whether or not a settling process is applied, in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process with a membrane bioreactor (MBR). Nutrient removal was considered in terms of developing an advanced water treatment system for ships in accordance with water quality standards set forth by 227(64). For these purposes, the TN and TP concentrations in the inflow and outflow water were measured to calculate the TN and TP removal efficiencies, depending on whether or not a settling process was used. Water discharged from a bathroom, which was constructed for the experiment, was used as the raw water. The experiment that included a settling process was conducted twice, and the operating conditions were: aeration for 90 min, settling for 30 min, agitation for 15 min, and settling for 15 min for one experiment; and aeration for 150 min, settling for 45 min, agitation for 15 min, and settling for 15 min in the other. Operating conditions for the experiment that did not include a settling process were: aeration for 180 min and agitation for 60 min. The concentration of the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) in the reactor was 3,500 mg/L, while the aeration rate was 121 L/min and the water production rate was 1.5 L/min. For the two experiments where a settling process was applied, the average TN removal efficiencies were 44.39% and 41.05%, and the average TP removal efficiencies were 47.85% and 46.04%. For the experiment in which a settling process was not applied, the average TN removal efficiency was 65.51%, and the average TP removal efficiency was 52.51%. Although the final nutrient levels did not satisfy the water quality standards of MEPC 227(64), the TN and TP removal efficiencies were higher when a settling process was not applied.

Suspended fine mineral particles are deposited at the areas with low flow velocity and low transportation capacity in rivers, reservoirs and lakes. It can be contaminated by heavy metals. Examples of problem fields art dredging of sediment, water pollutants, and maintenance of navigation channels and construction works. To deal with the settling problems it is necessary to understand tile physico-chemical characteristics of cohesive sediment under varying density of particle and ion addition(NaOH, HCl, NaCl), which is dissolved in river, because fine-grained cohesive sediment can lead to flocculation with the physico-chemical influences and takes different characteristics. Experiments with fresh and saline water are followed with fine-grained sediments(alumina and quartz) in settling columns. Settling velocity of suspended fine particles in still water was measured with a pressure sensor(maximum 10 mbar). Until the initial concentration of 20,000 mg/1 of alumina and quartz the settling velocity was on the increase. Above this initial concentration was it on the decrease. In an acid condition, which causes strong flocculation, average settling velocity of quartz powder was high. In an alkaline water low average settling velocity of it was observed. However, alumina behaved exactly contrarily.
