  • Experiments on settling behaviour of fine-grained particles without destroying the large fragile aggregates were carried out in still water with a CCD (Charged Coupled Device)-Camera. The experiments dealt with the measuring of the vertical concentration profile of cohesive particles with a CCD-Camera and the physico-chemical influences (NaCl, density, temperature and pH value) on the vertical distribution of the concentration. The vertical concentration profile of fine suspended particles (alumina and quartz) was possible up to $20,000\;mg/{\ell}$ with a CCD-Camera. The vertical concentration profile of cohesive sediments was on the decrease because of the increasing initial concentration, temperature and salinity. The vertical concentration profile of alumina was on the decrease quicker than quartz with increasing salinity. Furthermore, the pH value affects the settling behaviour of alumina. At a PH value of 4.2 the settling rate of the particles was very low and on the increase until pH 8.9 because of the aggregation behaviour of particles. From the PH value of 9 the average settling velocity was on the decrease.

  • PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the oxide layer removal process in the Co-Cr-Mo (CCM) abutment after casting procedure on the prosthesis settlement and screw stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CCM abutments of four different interface conditions (CCM-M; machined, CCM-O; oxide layer formed, CCM-B; blasted, CCM-P; polished after blasted) and gold abutment (Gold-C; Cast with type III Gold alloy) were used. The initial settling values of abutments were evaluated according to the difference of implant-abutment length when the tightening torques were applied at 5 Ncm and 30 Ncm, and the settling values of abutments caused by loading were evaluated according to the difference of implant-abutment length before and after loading with 250 N, 100000 cycle. The loss ratios of removal torque for abutment screws were evaluated according to the difference in value of removal torques under 30 Ncm tightening torque applied before and after cyclic loading. RESULTS: The CCM-P and CCM-B group showed a higher initial settling value compared with the Gold-C group (P<.05), while the Gold-C group showed the highest settling values caused by loading (P<.05) and no significant differences were observed for between CCM groups (P>.05). The loss ratio of removal torque values for the CCM-B, CCM-P groups did not differ significantly from that of the Gold-C group (P>.05). CONCLUSION: Even though the oxide layer was removed by different methods, CCM abutment with internal conical connection structure showed lower abutment settling and similar screw loosening after cyclic loading compared with gold abutment.

  • The river maintenance processing has revealed that the river beds in Korea have been significantly polluted in various ways for the last two decades. Thus, the dredging, transportation and landfilling of these contaminated materials are attracting public attention these days. In this study, electrokinetic method was applied in order to accelerate the settling processes of clay particles in suspension and evaluate the factors affecting the settling behaviour. It has been found from the testing results that the settling velocity under the influence of electrokinetics was much faster than the gravitational one, and the water content of slurry soil reduced significantly after the electrokinetic processing. The initial water content of slurry soil should be one of the important factors affecting the settling behaviour as well as variation of water content, and hence the electrokinetic processing would be the cost-effective method for the field application.

  • This study aims to estimate settling velocity ($W_s$) for cohesive sediments from water bodies (Incheon Coast, Kulpo Stream and Han River) mainly connected to the Kyeongin Ara-waterway through the laboratory settling experiments. Results of settling tests for these sediments show that $W_s$ values for sediments are quite different each other: $W_s$ values of Kulpo Stream sediments (0.01 < $W_s$ < 3.07 mm/s) are quite similar with those of Han River sediments (0.01 < $W_s$ < 2.97 mm/s) over the whole range of suspension concentration C (0.1 < C < 90 g/ L), while they are quite different with those for Incheon Coast sediments (0.01 < $W_s$ <0.92 mm/s). Qualitative analyses on test results for physico- chemical properties of sediments and waters with respect to settling velocities show that these differences in settling velocities are mainly due to the salinity difference in the water.

  • The pollutant removal efficiencies of stormwater runoff by settling were analyzed using field samples collected in 4 different raining events in a test bed installed in the Gwanpyung-Cheon stream in Daejeon. A 1.8 m high with 30 cm diameter cylindrical settling device was used for the settling test by measuring concentration of TSS, TP and TN for time and height. The pollutants removal rate was relatively high in the first 4 hours while 24 hours seem to be necessary to reach steady state in pollutant concentrations. However, there were no considerable differences in concentrations for height at a given time. This indicates most of particulate pollutant in the test seems to show independent settling with no interference to each other. Much part of particle sizes were distributed in the range of $10{\sim}100{\mu}m$. Average particulate fractions of TP and TN were estimated as 52.4% and 23.5%, respectively. This results explain why TN is difficult to remove by simple settling. This study indicates that a simple settling can provide effective method to remove significant amount of TSS and TP effectively and this can be used to protect urban river water quality.

  • In this study, we proposed modified settling basins transformed by substituting the downstream sill for low head weirs such as generic labyrinth weir and inclined crest labyrinth weir worked as internal baffles. Laboratory experiments were carried out to understand hydraulic characteristics inside of the settling basin to improve the efficiency of sedimentation rate. For a quantitative analysis, we suggested the headwater ratio($H_t/P$), the magnification ratio(L/W) and the inflow rate per total crest length($q_L$) as primary analysis indexes for sedimentation efficiency. Six different types of settling basin were used for labscaled pilot tests by distinguishing with internal structures. Based on results, the variation of headwater ratio with the change of magnification ratio would highly affect the deposition efficiency(%) and it was improved under specific condition that repeating arrange number(N) of labyrinth weir was between 2 and 4. Also, the regression analysis showed that initial condition and shape for improving sedimentation efficiency were plotted on the graph for both $q_L{\geq}3.5cm^2/s$ and $L/W{\leq}3.5$. It would be expected that the geometrically optimized labyrinth settling basin could be designed with proper deposition efficiency for inflow rates of influent and required area of settling basin utilizing the proposed analysis index in this study.

  • Retention ponds have been dug along some of the motorways in France to minimize environmental pollution by preventing pollutants from spreading over the surrounding area. A series of studies have been conducted to determine the physicochemical characteristics of the particles settling down in such a pond to evaluate the effectiveness of the pond as a trap for heavy metals such as Pb, Zn and Cd. The highly contaminated roadside soil and the uncontaminated background soil were also studied for comparison. The settling particles exhibited heavy metal concentrations of 2 to 8 times as much as the background Sologne soil, depending on the metal species. However, the heavy metal concentrations in the roadside soil were 7 to 26 times higher than those in the· settling particles. Sequential extraction experiments illustrated that the highly contaminated roadside soil consisted mainly of the readily soluble fractions (FII, FIII and FIV) for all three heavy metals, but little W which is hardly soluble. The proportion of W considerably increased up to one third of the total in the settling particles for Pb and Zn. This result as well as the large concentration differences between the roadside soil and the settling particles indicates that most of the heavy metals were lost to the surroundings even before reaching the retention pond. Cd exhibited somewhat different behavior in that the most soluble FI, which is negligible for Pb and Zn, occupied as much as one fourth of the total in the roadside soil. In addition, FV for Cd did not increase in the settling particles.

  • Ultra Rapid Coagulation (URC) can dramatically remove pollutants loaded in wastewater by adding weighted coagulation additives (WCA) and recycling sludge into the coagulation basin to increase settling velocity and surface adsorption ability of floc. Also settling chamber together with lamella plates offers the high rate settling velocity, which can economically treat a considerable amount of pollutants like as combined sewage overflow (CSO) during the heavy rainfall and reduce the pollutants load into the receiving water for securing water source. It was estimated optimal configuration of settling chamber by using fluent model and the possibilities of reusing the sludge generated in this system.

  • A multiple-output LDO regulator is a good choice in terms of the efficiency in embedded systems requiring various supply voltages. A small feedback factor in LDO incurs the long settling time, resulting in large ripples in the time-multiplexing strategy. A new proposed topology enhances the settling time, and hence the ripples by incorporating the constant feedback factor with different reference voltages. The simulation results of a prototype design in a standard $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS process verify that the proposed strategy enhances the settling time and ripple characteristic by more than doubled than a conventional circuit using the feedback factor of less than 0.4.
