Static Penetration Test (CPT) and Dynamic Penetration Test (DPT) are commonly used in-situ tests in a routine geotechnical investigation. Besides their use for qualitative investigation (lithology, homogeneity and spatial variability), they are used as practical tools of geotechnical characterization (resistance to the penetration, soil rigidity) and modern foundation design as well. The paper aims at presenting the results of an extensive research work on the evaluation of the 1D primary consolidation settlement of saturated clayey soils on the basis of the CPT or DPT tests. The work is based on an analysis of the correlations between the tip resistance to penetration measured in these tests and the parameters of compressibility measured by the compressibility oedometer test, through a local geotechnical database in the northern Algeria. Such an analysis led to the proposal of two methods of calculation of the settlement, one based on the CPT test and the other one on the DPT. The comparison between the predicted settlements and those computed on the basis of the oedometer test showed a good agreement which demonstrate the possbility to use the CPT and DPT tests as reliable tools of computation of foundation settlements in clayey soils.
During and after the construction of embankment on soft ground, consolidation settlements and lateral displacements develop. But generally it's very difficult to predict the magnitude of lateral deformations and the correct distribution of lateral displacements with depth under the toe of embankment because the consolidation and the shear deformations of soft ground occur simultaneously. This study shows that later displacements of ground surface arise by embankment loading act on soft clay hight water contents in laboratory model testing. The results of model test are observed settlement of embankment, amount of maximum rising and displacement of ground surface with loading velocity. The formula were proposed to predict lateral movement by test series.

In urban areas, tunnelling induced ground deformations, particularly ground settlements should be considered in order to minimize the damage of adjacent structures. Therefore, an appropriate monitoring system for the tunnel construction should be setup at the planning or design stage. A number of studies on ground settlements due to tunnelling in soft ground have been carried out so far. However, most studies have focused on clay soil rather than sand soil. In particular, a few studies on behaviour of subsurface deformations in granular material have been reported. In this study, two-dimensional laboratory model test with aluminium rods regarded as continuum granular material and close range photogrammetric technique, and numerical analysis were carried out in order to identify the behaviour of subsurface deformations due to shallow tunnelling. Direction and magnitude of displacement vectors from the model test was identical to the numerical analysis. In particular, the vector direction was appeared to be toward a point below the tunnel invert level. A narrow 'chimney or tulip like' pattern of vertical displacement was confirmed by both the model test and numerical analysis. This is consistent with the field data. In addition to the qualitative comparison, the quantitative comparison of subsurface settlements according to 2D volume loss showed good agreement between the model test and numerical analysis. Therefore, close range photogrammetric technique applied in the model test may be used to validate the result from the continuum numerical analysis.
In this study, the relationship between the settlements and the horizontal displacements according to embankment was analyzed at the marine sedimentary grounds for preparation of a site, and then the empirical equations of both the settlement and the horizontal displacement considering the embankment load and the thickness were proposed. To do this, the field and laboratory tests were performed at the improvement section where the pre-loading method was applied, and the field monitoring was performed using various sensors. Based on the results of the tests and monitoring, the ground deposits, soil characteristics and engineering properties were analyzed and the settlements and lateral movements were estimated by the Regression analysis. The ground deposits from the ground surface were composed of reclaimed soils, sedimentary soils and based rocks. The thickness of clay in the sedimentary soils layer was ranged from 3.9 m to 44.5 m. The embankment heights to improve the ground during pre-loading were constructed from 4.7 m to 7.8 m in each section. The settlements during embankment were ranged from 0.959 m to 2.217 m and the lateral movements were ranged from 0.048 m to 0.313 m. As the result of regression analysis, the equations of settlements and horizontal displacements according to embankments may be proposed as $s=0.02h^2+0.11h$ and ${\delta}=0.01e^{0.37h}$, respectively. The proposed empirical equations of the settlements and the horizontal displacements according to embankment on the marine sedimentary ground may be applied to the site where has a similar condition of study area.

The use of pile foundations has become more popular in recent years, as the combined action of the pile cap and the piles can increase the bearing capacity, reduce settlement, and the piles can be arranged so as to reduce differential deflection in the pile cap. Piles are relatively long, slender members that transmit foundation loads through soil strata of low bearing capacity to deeper soil or rock strata having a high bearing capacity. In this study analysis of pile cap with considering different parameters like depth of the pile cap, width and breadth of the pile cap, type of piles and different types of soil which affect the behaviour of pile cap foundation is carried out by using Finite Element Software ANSYS. For understanding the settlement behaviour of pile cap foundation, parametric studies have been carried out in four types of clay by varying pile cap dimensions with two types of piles namely normal and under-reamed piles for different group of piles. Furthermore, the analysis results of settlement and stress values for the pile cap with normal and under-reamed piles are compared. From the study it can be concluded that settlement values of pile cap with under-reamed pile are less than the settlements of pile cap with normal pile. It means that the ultimate load bearing capacity of pile cap with under-reamed piles are greater than the pile cap with normal piles.
One of the most important factors that should be considered for using any ground improvement technique is the stability of stabilized soil and the durability of the provided solution for getting the required engineering properties. Generally, most of the earth structures that are constructed on clayey soils are exposing movements due to the long periods of drying or wetting cycles. Over time, environmental changes may result in swells or settlements for these structures. In order to mitigate this problem, this research has been performed on mixtures of high plasticity clay with traditional additives such as lime, cement and non-traditional additives such as polypropylene fiber. The purpose of the research is to assess the most appropriate ground improvement technique by using commercially available additives for resisting the developed desiccation cracks during the drying process and resisting the volume changes that may result during wet/dry cycles as an attempt to simulate the changes of environmental conditions. The results show that the fiber-reinforced samples have the lowest volumetric deformation in comparision with cement and lime stabilized samples, and the optimum fiber content is identified as 0.38%. In addition, the desiccation cracks were not visible on the samples' surface for both unreinforced and chemically stabilized samples. Regarding cracks resistance resulting from the desiccation process, it is observed, that the resistance is connected with the fiber content and increases with the increase of the fiber inclusion, and the optimum content is between 1% and 1.5%.
In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement and to gain a required shear strength for a given soft clay deposit, the preloading technique combined with a vertical drainage system has been widely applied. In this'study, the theory of axisymmetric consolidation which considers the variation of compressibility and permeability during the conslidation process, has ben developed. A computer program named AXICON for the analysis of axisymmetric nonlinear consolidation is developed by adopting an explicit finite difference method. Smear and well resistance effects are also considered. The AXICON is capable of analyzing the consolidation behavior of multi -layered deposits and simulates time dependent loading sequence. The results of AXICON are validated with analytical solutions of Hansbo and Barron, and compared with insitu settlements and pore pressures measured in a soft clay deposit.
This paper describes the findings obtained from a research project aimed at investigating, via 1 g laboratory model tests, the ground movements caused by multiple side-by-side (sbs) tunnel construction in clay. The ground movements above a second tunnel showed different trends from those observed above a first tunnel. These trends include an increase in the overall volume loss, and a widening of the settlement troughs on the near limb of the trough accompanied by a shift of the maximum settlement towards existing tunnel. This would suggest that the use of simple predictive methods of adopting a Gaussian curve for analysing the ground settlements associated with twin (sbs) tunnel construction is not appropriate. Therefore the current paper adopts a method that modifies the Gaussian curve approach in order to improve the predictions. This paper comments on the parameter selection involved with adopting this new method to apply it to full-scale field situations, and also discusses its limitations.
This study was carried out for the purpose of pre-estimating long-term settlement under condition of actual field soil's property, in case of building up industrial sites on the marine deposit silty clay located at West Coast in Korea. This study analyzed Hyperbolic Method, Square Root Time Method and Exponential Function Method with utilization of measured survey values of settlement in In-Cheon Namdong Industrial Sites. In the future, for the continuos utilization, it seemed to be needed that further the survey values of fields should be accurartely measured for the analysis of more accurate pre-estimate about long-term settlement. Among the prediction methods of settlement Hyperbolic Method seemed to be the best fitting method for measured data. The settlement equations were derived from above three methods, for long-term settlements.

Consolidation settlement, a crucial parameter in geotechnical design of soft ground, has not been computed in a unique way due to different computation methods in practice. To improve computational error in calculating consolidation settlement, a number of researches has been attempted. Conventional 1-dimensional consolidation theory assumes the center of the clay layer as the representative point to obtain effective stress in calculation, which could resort to erroneous results. To calculate exact solutions considering initial distribution of effective stress, diving a stratum into multi-layers could resort to wasting time and effort. In the study, a novel methodology for calculating consolidation settlement via Guassian quadrature is developed. The method generally is capable of computing settlements in any case of the stress conditions encountered in fields.
