Magnetic sensing system and automated monitoring system based on digital hall sensor for ground settlement are developed to change traditional method for monitoring surface settlement and underground settlement by manual type and to overcome technical limits of existing automated settlement monitoring system. It's possible to monitor surface settlement and underground settlement with multi-points at the same time in a single hole with NX size. It was possible to verify technical confidence and stability by several case studies of soft ground improvement project.
In stability and settlement management of soft ground, the settlement prediction technology has been continuously developed and used to reduce construction cost and confirm the exact land use time. However, the preexistence prediction methods such as hyperbolic method, Asaoka method and Hoshino method are difficult to predict the settlement accurately at the beginning of consolidation because the accurate settlement prediction is possible only after many measurement periods have passed. It is judged as the reason for estimating the future settlement through the proportionality assumption of the slope which the preexistence prediction method computes from the settlement curve. In this study, ARIMA technique is introduced among time series analysis techniques and compared with preexistence prediction methods. ARIMA method was predictable without any distinction of ground conditions, and the results similar to the existing method are predicted early (final settlement).
Near-surface excavations may cause the tilting and destruction of the adjacent superstructures in big cities. The stability of a huge excavation and its nearby superstructures was studied in this paper. Some test instruments monitored the deformation and loads at the designed location. Then the numerical models of the excavation were made in FLAC3D (a three-dimensional finite difference code) and Plaxis-3D (a three-dimensional finite element code). The effects of different supporting and reinforcement tools such as nails, piles, and shotcretes on the stability and bearing capacity of the foundation were analyzed through different numerical models. The numerically approximated results were compared with the corresponding in-field monitored results and reasonable compatibility was obtained. It was concluded that the displacement in excavation and the settlement of the nearby superstructure increases gradually as the depth of excavation rises. The effects of support and reinforcements were also observed and modeled in this study. The settlement of the structure gradually decreased as the supports were installed. These analyses showed that the pile significantly increased the bearing capacity and decreased the settlement of the superstructure. As a whole, the monitoring and numerical simulation results were in good consistency with one another in this practically important project.
The construction of shield tunnelling in urban sites is facing serious risks from complex and changeable underground conditions. Construction problems in the sand-clay mixed ground have been more reported in recent decades for its poor control of soil loss in tunnel face, ground settlement and supporting pressure. Since the limitations of observation methods, the conventional physical modelling experiments normally simplify the tunnelling to a plane strain situation whose results are not reliable in mixed ground cases which exhibit more complicated responses. We propose a new method for the study of the mixed ground tunnel through which mixed lays are simulated with transparent soil surrogates exhibiting different mechanical properties. An experimental framework for the transparent soil modelling of the mixed ground tunnel was established incorporated with the self-developed digital image correlation system (PhotoInfor). To understand better the response of face stability, ground deformation, settlement and supporting phenomenon to tunnelling excavation in the sand-clay mixed ground, a series of case studies were carried out comparing the results from cases subjected to different buried depths and mixed phenomenon. The results indicate that the deformation mode, settlement and supporting phenomenon vary with the mixed phenomenon and buried depth. Moreover, a stratigraphic effect exists that the ground movement around mixed face reveals a notable difference.

From the result of analysis the necessity of root fixing stone construction through the result of finite element method, following results were acquired. 1. The consolidation settlement by stone weight is small amount so that it is interpreted there is no stone settlement reducing effect by root fixing stone. 2. It is interpreted that there is no effect existence and nonexistence of the heaving soil to the settlement. 3. There is little settlement reducing effect by root fixing stone but there may be protection of excavation effect. Therefore, for long-term stability, installing the root fixing stone to the section where the typhoon effect directly would be proper.
This paper presents the design, construction and performance of ground treatment to support road embankment on refuse landfill. Long-term settlement of refuse landfill is analysised by Sower and Yen/scanlon. As a results of site test, predicting settlement excess the allowable settlement and ultimate bearing capacity is not satisfied. The effectiveness of DDR(Deep Dynamic Replacement) is monitered by field tests (SPT, PBT, PMT) before, during and after construction of the stone columns. The ultimate bearing capacity for reinforced landfill by stone columns obtained from the in-situ test results has been compared with the existing theories. In municipal wastes landfill, settlement after treatment using stone column is satisfied to allowable residual settlement. Therefore, long-term stability can be gain in these cases.
In order to constrain the railway roadbed settlement which causes track irregularity, and thus threats running stability and ride quality, advanced Back-to-Back (BTB) reinforced retaining wall was numerically analyzed as railway roadbed structure. This study is intended to improve conventional Back-to-Back reinforced retaining wall as the technology which would reduce the roadbed settlement in a way of constraining the lateral displacement of its prestressed vertical facing and inducing arching effects in roadbed (backfill) placed between masonry diaphragm wall and vertical facing. As a result of numerical analysis, it was found that the roadbed settlement was reduced by 10% due to the prestressed vertical facing and embedded masonry diaphragm wall of the advanced Back-to-Back reinforced retaining wall system.
Tilting-train is very attractive to the railroad users in the world due to the advantage of high speed in curved track using pre-existing infrastructure of railway. Tilting-train has a unique allowable speed and mechanism especially in curved track. In this work, when tilting-train is operated with the allowable speed, the behavior of roadbed is evaluated by examining its settlement and bearing capacity. Additionally, the stability of roadbed is estimated as the roadbed is in the condition of soft soil influenced by the weather effects and cyclic train loading. Numerical results show that the roadbed settlement satisfies the allowable settlement when the elastic modulus of upper roadbed should be greater than $5000t/m^2$.

This paper analyzes the main factors affecting user selection of a small-sum electronic payment system using survey data of 396 users. Several findings emerge. First, users consider three pillars and eight factors in adopting a new system : system features(stability, security, and flexibility), transaction cost(payment commission and settlement period), and financial capability of provider(stability of financial structure, risk management capability, and funding capability). Second, the stability of the financial structure of the system provider is the most important factor to user acceptance of a new e-payment system. Users tend to consider uncertainty risk more seriously than transaction cost. This reflects the reality that electronic payment system service industry has not fully fledged yet. Third, some moderating effects exist according to payment methods and business usages. As for payment methods, speedy settlement cycle for wired/wireless phone payment, system stability for credit card and account transfer payment, and security for advance payment means are crucial factors. As for business usages, the stability of financial structure for online game content, system stability for music and video content, proxy payment commission for e-learning content, flexibility of the payment system for digital adult content, and security for public services are decisive ones.
This research was intended to verify the stability of landfill final cover using SRSL(Self Recovering Sustainable Liner) with regard to differential settlements due to the degradation of waste and so on in a waste landfill. Numerical analysis was performed using FLAC 2D software program with input parameters based on soil characteristic tests and reference data after the blank was designed in order to represent the decomposition condition of waste. The maximum settlement of landfill cover was calculated to investigate the structural stability of landfill cover with the different condition of settlement width, settlement depth, and number of differential settlements. The allowable maximum deformation rate of SRSL, which was calculated using field permeability tests, was 6 mm. The analysis showed that SRSL was stable in case of a differential settlement width not exceeding 24.5% of total cover width.
