  • Because of the imminent market opening of livestock and poultry products, Korean poultry industry is faced an influx of contagious diseases from abroad. Due to the increasing trend of intensive and automatic poultry farming, the risks of catching various poultry epidemics are ever more increasing. For the prevention of poultry epidemics, the principles of biosecurity should be observed rather strictly. In addition, regular checking to confirm the presence or absence of latent diseases through serological test, post-mortem examination, and laboratory test, should be carried out routinely. Finally, all kinds of stress factors should be minimized to keep the flock healthy and productive, so that they can achieve their maximum genetic potential.

  • Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) was detected from Kimchi by biological and serological assay 5. Kimchi samples three month after cooked were collected, and were inoculated on N. tabacum var. Burley 21 and NC 95. Out of 33 samples, 6 showed typical symptoms induced by TMV, local necrotic lesions on Burley 21 and mosaic on NC 95. All saps from tobacco leaves showed the mosaic symptom reacted positively against TMV antiserum by agar gel double diffusion test. Based on the results, the Kimchi is considered as one of the important inoculum sources in Korea.

  • Three hundred and sixty five samples of avian droppings, collected from parks and zoo, were investigated for the occurrence of Cryptococcus neoformans in Korea. Thirteen samples were positive for C. neoformans. All isolates were obtained from withered pigeon droppings. Identification and serotyping of isolates were determined by means of serological test and polymerase chain reaction(PCR) fingerprinting. All isolates belonged to C. neoformans var. grubbi(serotype A).

  • Seventy-two pigeon dropping samples were collected from 26 different localities in Seoul and investigated for the occurrence of Cryptococcus neoformans. Seventeen samples from 8 different localities were found to be positive for C. neoformans. All isolates were obtained from withered pigeon droppings. Identification and serotyping of the isolates were determined by means of serological testing and DNA fingerprinting. All isolates belonged to C. neoformans var. grubbi (serotype A).

  • Serological classification was carried out on 10 samples of PEV isolated from the feces, the milk and the brain of the diseased pigs in Korea by CFT using type specific antisera of PEV. Ten samples of PEV were classified into 2 serotypes which were serotype 3 and 8. PEV from the feces belonged to serotype 8 and those from the milk and the brain to serotype 3. The cross reaction of serotype 3 occurred especially with serotype 1. Talfan virus. It can be said that at least 2 serotypes of PEV have existed in Korea.

  • A survey on the prevalence and distribution of antibodies to BLV was performed by the agar-gel immunodiffusion test over a period from 1983 to 1985. More than 2,407 serum samples were collected from Holstein cattle raised in the eastern part of Saitama prefecture where suburban dairy farm is operated. The average positive rate of this period was 4.9%. The rates of reactive samples varied from 2.6 to 9.8% among the age groups of cattle from younger than one year to 14 years of age. The positive rate increased gradually with age. The positive rates also varied widely from 0 to 21% among areas surveyed. Furthermore, there were large differences in this rate among farms even in the same area. The results were interpreted and discussed in connection with the enzootic feature of BLV infection.
