A Study on the Serious Games Design Framework via Potential Outcomes - Focused on Construal Level Interventions

  • Although many studies have considered the outcomes and impacts of serious games, little is known about the factors which affect a user's perception or interpretation in games during the process of decision making from theoretical perspectives. This study aimed to explore the process of user perception from the perspective of construal level theory, and to suggest a theoretical design approach for the development of effective serious games. In the current study, cognitive and affective learning outcomes were articulated through literature review and synthesized into a series of assumptions with persuasive and educational aspects in serious games. Serious games reflect the potential of the game mechanism for changing players' perception, and helping with knowledge acquisition of the users. The potential to use construal level theory for effective serious games interventions was suggested, and a Serious Games Design Framework was proposed via potential outcomes from recent advanced research. Finally, implications of the application of the suggested model with various-related purposes and directions for future research were discussed. The model could be useful not only for game researchers and designers, but also for game marketers in attracting potential consumers.

  • 교육 패러다임의 변화에 따라 기능성게임을 이용한 교육방법에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있다. 하지만 교육용 기능성게임의 학습효과에 중점을 둔 결과 지향적 게임 디자인 설계는 게임의 재미적인 요소와 몰입감을 간과한 경우가 많으며, 지속적 학습참여와 같은 내재적 요인들을 반영하지 못했다. 교육용 기능성게임의 지속적인 사용 및 확장과 학습 효과를 높여주기 위하여 학습자의 학습 성향 및 인지확장에 대한 변화를 반영한 게임디자인 설계가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 인지심리학 모형을 바탕으로 한 게임디자인 설계전략을 문헌 리뷰를 통하여 분석 및 제시하고자 한다. 이는 학습자 및 학습효과에 질적 양적측면에서 긍정적 영향을 미칠 것으로 판단된다.

  • 기능성 게임의 교육적 잠재력에 대한 합의가 있는 반면, 설계뿐만 아니라 분석과 평가를 지원하기 위한 방법론과 도구의 부족이 아직 존재한다. 본 논문은 기능성 게임에 요구되는 교육학 관련 연구의 분석을 통해 필요한 요소들을 알아내어 새로운 방법론 또는 설계 방향을 모색하려는 의도를 가진다. 이를 위해 4DF(Four Dimensional Framework), GOM(Game Object Model), LM(Learning Mechanics)-GM(Game Mechanics), 교사용 프레임워크에 대한 분석을 하였다. 교육적 게임이 직면한 가장 큰 쟁점 중의 하나는 교육과 게임 원리의 부적절한 통합에 있다. 이것은 게임 설계자와 교육 전문가가 공통적인 어휘나 업무영역의 관점을 공유하지 않는다는 사실을 포함하여 다양한 요인에 기인한다.

EcoBlog: 생태학적 가상 커뮤니티 구현을 위한 4 차원 공간 프레임워크 (EcoBlog: 4d Spatial Framework for Ecological Virtual Community)

  • Although people's anxiety about the environmental problem has been getting higher, they are not provided good quality of knowledge about the environment. Based on this situation, Ecoblog can be a new type of online community to educate the public in ecological knowledge. Especially, Ecoblog can be utilized as a method of "preventive education", and it will contribute to reduce great amounts of environmental budget to restore contaminated environment to previous condition. Ecoblog also utilizes the concept of blog which user can create and append their site with chosen themes. A weblog or a blog is a non-commercial webpage regularly updated through the use of a blogging software which allows the user to "publish" kinds of amalgamations of text and graphics to the page as posts. The technology offered in Ecoblog is utilizing the concept of 4D place and game metaphor in order to provide users the sense of participation, interaction and immersion among them and the growing community. Thus, it requires applying the CAAD technology by implementing semantically well-defined building data model as a core database to create a 4D virtual community. This research focuses on defining a 4d spatial framework suitable for developing an online ecological community. Through our study, the state-of-the-art of online community has been studied at the first step. Second, the scenario of using EcoBlog described with content, visualization and navigation are defined based on the critical features derived at the first step. Finally, a 4d spatial framework composed of semantic building data model, content and rule database is constructed to propose factors that are necessary to establish an ecological virtual community. In conclusion, our framework could enhance the comprehension and interaction between users and virtual buildings in the ecological community by integrating the concept of game design, 4D CAD and semantic data model. Such framework can be applied to any online community for an educational purpose.
