  • This paper proposes and designs a new output filter called an LCFL filter for application to three phase three wire shunt active power filters (SAPF). This LCFL filter is derived from a traditional LCL filter by replacing its capacitor with a C-type filter, and then constructing an L-C-type Filter-L (LCFL) topology. The LCFL filter can provide better switching ripple attenuation capability than traditional passive damped LCL filters. The LC branch series resonant frequency of the LCFL filter is set at the switching frequency, which can bypass most of the switching harmonic current generated by a SAPF converter. As a result, the power losses in the damping resistor of the LCFL filter can be reduced when compared to traditional passive damped LCL filters. The principle and parameter design of the LCFL filter are presented in this paper, as well as a comparison to traditional passive damped LCL filters. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the theoretical analyses and effectiveness of the LCFL filter.

  • This paper deals with the novel control algorithm of single-phase hybrid active power filter for the compensation of harmonic current components in nonlinear R-L load with passive active power filters. To construct two-axes coordinate, an imaginary second phase was made by giving time delay to line current. In this proposed method, the new signal, which was the delayed through the filtering by the phase-delay property of low-pass filter, is used as the secondary phase. Because two phases have different phase, instantaneous calculation of harmonic current is possible. In this paper, a reference voltage is created by multiplying gain of filter by compensation current using the rotating reference frames that synchronizes with source-frequency, not applying to instantaneous reactive power theory which has been used with the existing fixed reference frames. This paper shows the experimental results, which provide a high accuracy and extremely fast response of single-phase hybrid active Bower filter under the operation with the proposed control method.

  • In this paper, for compensating dynamic voltage sag and harmonic current, 3-phase hybrid series active power filter based on the space vector detection is proposed. The Space vector algorithm for detecting the voltage sag and the harmonic current in compared with conventional theory is a simple method for calculating the compensating reference without any coordinated transformation. The effectiveness of the proposed system is verified by the PSIM simulation in the steady state and the transient state, which the proposed system is able to simultaneously compensate harmonics and source voltage unbalance / sag.

  • This paper deals with single-phase unified power quality conditioner, which aims at the integration of series-active and shunt-active tilter. The series filter is used to compensate for the voltage distortions and the shunt filter is used to provide reactive power and counteract the harmonic current injected by the load. Also, the voltage of the DC link capacitor is controlled to a desired value by the shunt active filter. In order to verify the performance of the proposed conditioner, computer simulations using MATLAB/SIMULINK were demonstrated. The results confirm that the proposed conditioner shows excellent performance to eliminate the harmonics and voltage flickers generated at the singe-phase nonlinear load.

  • A new single phase half-bridge cascaded multilevel inverter based series active power filter (SAPF) is proposed. The main parts of the inverter are presented in detail. With the proposed inverter topology, any compensation voltage reference can be easily obtained. Therefore, the inverter acts as a harmonic source when the reference is a non-sinusoidal signal. A 31-level inverter based SAPF with the proposed topology, is manufactured and the voltage harmonics of the load connected to the point of common coupling (PCC) are compensated. There is no need for a parallel passive filter (PPF) since the main purpose of the paper is to represent the compensation capability of the SAPF without a PPF. It is aimed to compensate the voltage harmonics of the load fed by a non-sinusoidal supply using the proposed inverter. The validity of the proposed inverter based SAPF is verified by simulation as well as experimental study. The system efficiency is also measured in this study. Both simulation and experimental results show that the proposed multilevel inverter is suitable for SAPF applications.

  • In recent years, since more and more diode rectifiers with smoothing dc capacitor are used in electronic equipments, household appliances and ac drives, harmonics generated by these loads have become a major issue. In addition, 3-phase 4-wire system is widely employed in distributing electric energy to several office building and manufacturing plants. This systems show excessive currents in the neutral. These neutral currents are fundamentally third harmonic, and their presence is tied to wiring failure, elevating of neutral potentials, transformer overheating, etc. In response to the concerns, this paper proposes a series active power filter scheme based on direct compensating voltage extraction method and the advantage of this control algorithm is direct extraction of compensation voltage reference without multiplying gain. Therefore, the calculation of the compensation voltage reference will becom much simpler than other control algorithm. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a prototype active power filter is built and some experiments are carried out.

  • This paper presents a power system harmonic elimination using the mixed adaptive linear neural network and variable step-size leaky least mean square (ADALINE-VSSLLMS) control algorithm based active power filter (APF). The weight vector of ADALINE along with the variable step-size parameter and leakage coefficient of the VSSLLMS algorithm are automatically adjusted to eliminate harmonics from the distorted load current. For all iteration, the VSSLLMS algorithm selects a new rate of convergence for searching and runs the computations. The adopted shunt-hybrid APF (SHAPF) consists of an APF and a series of 7th tuned passive filter connected to each phase. The performance of the proposed ADALINE-VSSLLMS control algorithm employed for SHAPF is analyzed through a simulation in a MATLAB/Simulink environment. Experimental results of a real-time prototype validate the efficacy of the proposed control algorithm.

  • This paper presents an integrative control scheme for series-type active power filters combined with shunt passive filters not only to compensate for the source voltage unbalance and current harmonics but also to correct the power factor. To reduce the power capacity of the active filters, passive filters are connected in parallel. Diode rectifiers are replaced by the PWM converters in order to feed the real power back to the source. Power factor control is performed by changing the phase of the load voltage so that the phase of the source current coincides with that of the source voltage. The resultant voltage reference is the addition of the voltage component compensating for the source voltage unbalance and harmonic currents and the voltage component correcting the power factor. The validity of the proposed algorithm has been verified by experimental results.

  • This paper presents the 3-phase hybrid series active power filter with dynamic voltage restorer(DVR) which serve as an energy buffer and current harmonics blocking resistor connected to sensitive loads, such as, to compensate voltage dips and current harmonics in power distribution system. The DVR is to inject a dynamically controlled voltage generated by a forced commutated converter in series to the bus voltage by means of a booster transformer. The momentary amplitudes of the three injected phase voltages are controlled such as to eliminate any detrimental effects of a bus fault to the load voltage. The proposed system is able to simultaneously compensate current harmonics, voltage fluctuating and voltage unbalance in power distribution systems. The reference phase angle detected by synchronized with the positive sequence component of the unbalanced source by using symmetrical component transformation. The effectiveness of proposed system is verified by the computer simulation.

  • This paper presents a single-phase asymmetric half-bridge cascaded multilevel inverter based series active power filter (SAPF) for harmonic voltage compensation. The effect of level number on performance of the proposed SAPF is examined in terms of total harmonic distortion (THD) and system efficiency. Besides, the relationship between the level number and the number of switching device are compared with the other multilevel inverter topologies used in APF applications. The paper is also aimed to demonstrate the capability of the SAPF for compensating harmonic voltages alone, without using a passive power filter (PPF). To obtain the required output voltage, a new switching algorithm is developed. The proposed SAPF with levels of 7, 15 and 31 is used in both simulation and experimental studies and the harmonic voltages of the load connected to the point of common coupling (PCC) is compensated under two different loading conditions. Furthermore, very high system efficiency values such as 98.74% and 96.84% are measured in the experimental studies and all THD values are brought into compliance with the IEEE-519 Standard. As a result, by increasing the level number of the inverter, lower THD values can be obtained even under high harmonic distortion levels while system efficiency almost remains the same.
