Large dams are a part of the infrastructure of any society, and a huge amount of resources are consumed to build them. Among the various types of dams, the optimum design of concrete gravity dams requires special attention because these types of dams require a huge amount of concrete for their construction. On the other hand, concrete gravity dams are among the structures whose design, regarding the acting forces, geometric parameters, and resistance and stability criteria, has some complexities. In the present study, an optimization methodology is proposed based on Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP), and a computer program is developed to perform optimization of concrete gravity dams. The optimum results for 45 concrete gravity dams are studied and regression analyses are performed to obtain some explicit formulas for optimization of the gravity dams. The optimization of concrete gravity dams can be provided easily using the developed formulas, without the need to perform any more optimization process.
This paper considers that a public department under specialized TQM manpower constraints have to implement multiple total quality management (TQM) policies to promote its service performance (fundamental goal) by adopting a centralized sequential advancement strategy (CSAS). Under CSAS, the decision-makers (DMs) start off by focusing specialized TQM manpower on a single policy, then transfer the specialized TQM manpower to the next policy when the first policy reaches the predetermined implementation time limit (in terms of education and training). Suppose that each TQM policy has a different desirous education and training goal. When the desirous goals for all TQM policies are achieved, we say that the fundamental goal will be satisfied. Within the limitation of total implementation period of time for all policies, assume the desirous goals for all TQM policies cannot be achieved completely. Under this premise, the optimal implementation sequence for all TQM policies must be calculated to maximize the weighted achievement of the desirous goal. We call this optimization problem a TQM case of "centralized sequential decision-making problem (CSDMP)". The achievement of the desirous goal for each TQM policy is usually affected by the experience in prior implemented policies, which makes solving CSDMP quite difficult. As a result, this paper introduces the concepts of sequential effectiveness and path effectiveness. The structural properties are then studied to propose theoretical methods for solving CSDMP. Finally, a numerical example is proposed to demonstrate CSDMP′s usability.
In the preliminary design stage of an RC 3D-frame, repeated sequential analyses to determine optimal members' sizes and the investigation of the parameters required to minimize the differential column shortening are computational effort consuming, especially when considering various types of loads such as dead load, temperature action, time dependent effects, construction and live loads. Because the desired accuracy at this stage does not justify such luxury, two backpropagation feedforward artificial neural networks have been proposed in order to approximate this information. Instead of using a commercial software package, many references providing advanced principles have been considered to code a program and generate these neural networks. The first one predicts the typical amount of time between two phases, needed to achieve the minimum maximorum differential column shortening. The other network aims to prognosticate sequential analysis results from those of the simultaneous analysis. After the training stages, testing procedures have been carried out in order to ensure the generalization ability of these respective systems. Numerical cases are studied in order to find out how good these ANN match with the sequential finite element analysis. Comparison reveals an acceptable fit, enabling these systems to be safely used in the preliminary design stage.
This paper describes a comparative study of genetic algorithm and mathematical programming technique applied in the design optimization of geodesic dome. In particular, the genetic algorithm adopted in this study uses the so-called re-birthing technique together with the standard GA operations such as fitness, selection, crossover and mutation to accelerate the searching process. The finite difference method is used to calculate the design sensitivity required in mathematical programming techniques and three different techniques such as sequential linear programming (SLP), sequential quadratic programming(SQP) and modified feasible direction method(MFDM) are consistently used in the design optimization of geodesic dome. The optimum member sizes of geodesic dome against several external loads is evaluated by the codes $ISADO-GA{\alpha}$ and ISADO-OPT. From a numerical example, we found that both optimization techniques such as GA and mathematical programming technique are very effective to calculate the optimum member sizes of three dimensional discrete structures and it can provide a very useful information on the existing structural system and it also has a great potential to produce new structural system for large spatial structures.

This paper shows the design optimization of the paper feeding mechanism under dynamic behavior by using commercial codes of RecurDyn/MTT2D and RecurDyn/AutoDesign which are developed by functionBay, Inc. A virtual mockup for dynamics analysis of the paper feeding mechanism is build on RecurDyn/MTT2D and is simulated. Flexible paper is represented as a series of rigid bars connected by revolute joints and rotational spring dampers. Paper is fed by a contact and friction mechanism on rollers or guides. The slip of the paper and nip force of rollers are measured to estimate the system performance. After a simulation, these performances are automatically send to RecurDyn/AutoDesign which is a sequential approximate optimization tool based on the response surface modeling. RecurDyn/AutoDesign makes the approximate objective function and computes the optimized design points of the design variables and gives them to analysis tool. And then the simulation is repeated with the updated design variables. These processes are repeated until finding a tolerable design optimization. In this paper, a paper feeding mechanism is introduced and it is optimized with the proposed algorithms.

A method of design optimization for minimization of force ripple and maximization of thrust force in a linear brushless permanent magnet motor without finite element analysis is represented. The design optimization method calculated the driving force in the function of electric and geometric parameters of a linear brushless PM motor using the sequential quadratic programming method. Using electric and geometric parameters obtained by this method, the normalized force ripple is reduced 7.7% (9.7% to 2.0%) and the thrust force is increased 12.88N (111.55N to 124.43N) compared to those not using design optimization.

In this study, shape optimization of micro-static mixer with a cantilever beam was accomplished for mixing the mixing efficiency by using successive response surface approximations. Variables were chosen as the length of cantilever beam and the angle between horizontal and the cantilever beam. Sequential approximate optimization method was used to deal with both highly nonlinear and non-smooth characteristics of flow field in a micro-static mixer. Shape optimization problem of a micro-static mixer can be divided into a series of simple subproblems. Approximation to solve the subproblems was performed by response surface approximation, which does not require the sensitivity analysis. To verify the reliability of approximated objective function and the accuracy of it, ANOVA analysis and variables selection method were implemented, respectively. It was verified that successive response surface approximation worked very well and the mixing efficiency was improved very much comparing with the initial shape of a micro-static mixer.
In this paper, the development of a new optimization software for finite element model updating of engineering structures titled as FemUP is described. The program is used for computational FEM model updating of structures depending on modal testing results. This paper deals with the FE model updating procedure carried out in FemUP. The theoretical exposition on FE model updating and optimization techniques is presented. The related issues including the objective function, constraint function, different residuals and possible parameters for FE model updating are investigated. The issues of updating process adopted in FemUP are discussed. The ideas of optimization to be used in FE model updating application are explained. The algorithm of Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) is explored which will be used to solve the optimization problem. The possibilities of the program are demonstrated with a three dimensional steel frame model. As a result of this study, it can be said that SQP algorithm is very effective in model updating procedure.
In the present study, an integrated framework of geometric modeling, analysis, and design optimization is proposed. Geometric modeling is based on B-spline surface representation. Geometrically-exact shell finite element is implemented in analysis module. Control points of the surface are selected as design variables for optimization, which can make the interaction easier between analysis and surface representation. Sequential linear programming(SLP) is adopted for the shape optimization of surfaces. For the computation of shape sensitivities, semi-analytical method is used. The developed integrated framework should serve as a powerful tool for the geometric modeling, analysis, and shape design of surfaces.
In this study, the topology optimization is applied to the design of a piezoelectric microactuator satisfying the specific mean transduction ratio(MTR). The optimization problem is formulated to minimize the difference between the specified and the current mean transduction ratio. In order to analyze the response of the piezoelectric-structure coupled system, both the structural and the electric potential are considered in the finite element method. The optimization problem is resolved by using Sequential Linear Programming(SLP) and the results of test problems show that the design of a piezoelectric microactuator with specified mean transduction ratio can be obtained.
