  • Anaerobic ammonium oxidation with nitrite to $N_2$(anammox) is a recently discovered microbial reaction with interesting potential for nitrogen removal from wastewater. Here we investigated the microbial community structure in the sequencing batch reactor(SBR) with an anammox activity. The SBR was optimized for the enrichment of a very slowly growing microbial community and showed that possibility of anaerobic ammonium oxidation. Fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH) analysis revealed that anaerobic ammonium oxidizers were Candidatus Brocadia anammoxidans and Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensis. Furthermore, Nitrosomol1as spp. of the ${\beta}$ -subclass of Proteobacteria was also present within the anaerobic SBR microorganisms.

  • Biological nutrient removal (BNR) sludge was added to a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) in the addition ratios of 0%, 20%, 40%, 50% while observing the variation of nutrient removal characteristics and microorganism groups. When the BNR sludge was added in a ratio over 40%, the characteristics of EBPR (enhanced biological phosphorus removal) was shown at the 27 days. However, a distinct BNR was not shown when the addition ratio of BNR sludge was lower than 40%. The organic removal efficiency were shown as 90% in all SBRs irrespective of the addition ratio of BNR sludge. At the 27 days, the phosphorus removal efficiencies were shown as 40%, 55%, 77% and 69%, respectively, according to the addition ratio of BNR sludge. Overall, efficient nitrification and phosphorus removal was shown when the added BNR sludge ratio was over 40%.

  • Various analytical methods such as electron microscopy, quinone analysis, and 16S rDNA sequencing studies were used to investigate the microbial communities and to identify the microorganisms responsible for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) in an anaerobic/aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) fed with acetate. Electron photomicrographs showed that oval-shaped microorganisms of about $0.7\;{\sim}\;1\;{\mu}m$ in diameter dominated the microbial sludge. These microorganisms contained polyphosphate granules and glycogen inclusions, which suggests that they are a kind of phosphorus accumulating organism. Quinone and 16S rRNA sequence analyses showed that the members of Proteobacteria beta subclass were the most abundant species, which were affiliated with the Rhodocyclus-likes group. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the two dominating clones of the beta subclass were most distantly related to Propionivibrio dicarboxylicus DSM 5885 and Rhodocyclus tenuis DSM 109 with about 95% and 96% sequence similarity, respectively. Therefore, it was concluded that the oval-shaped organisms related to the Rhodocyclus-likes group are likely to be responsible for biological phosphorus removal in SBR operation supplied with acetate.

  • In the present work, the aerobic particle's characteristics were enhanced. A polymer was used to make aerobic granular sludge in short period of time. And operation parameters were calculated for organic matter removal in domestic wastewater using a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The experiment for sewage (Influent concentration of 63~72 mg COD/L) by using mature aerobic granular sludge showed the organic matter removal rate k and oxygen utilization coefficient a', b' were $10.161d^{-1}$ and 0.87 mg $O_2/mg$ $COD_r$, 0.11 mg $O_2/mg$ MLVSS d respectively. Therefore, it was more effective than K value $5{\sim}8d^{-1}$ of conventional activated sludge process. The sludge synthetic value and sludge auto-oxydation value were 0.45 mg VSS/mg $COD_r$ and 0.05 mg VSS/mg MLVSS d respectively. Consequently, mortality rates of microorganisms was lower than conventional activated sludge process.

  • This research investigated the effect of COD/N ratio on nitrogen removal, and the use of organics in raw wastewater as a carbon source for denitrification in SBR(Sequencing Batch Reactor) systems. Four laboratory scale reactors were operated in three modes. Only the difference between modes were; Mode I operated in aerated condition during fill while Mode II in anoxic condition and Mode III operated on two fills per cycle in anoxic condition. When COD/N ratio increased, total nitrogen removal efficiencies increased from 8.7 to 57.7 percent in Mode I, from 28.9 to 83.2 percent in Mode II and from 42.7 to 97.8 percent in Mode III, respectively. COD removal efficiencies ranged from 93 to 98 percent throughout the study. SBR operation in Mode III of feeding twice per cycle in anoxic condition was an effective operating method for nitrogen removal and nitrogen concentration in effluent can be estimated using influent COD and nitrogen concentrations.

  • This study was conducted to find the effect of electron acceptors on the formation of granular sludge by using four different types of electron acceptors. The phosphorous uptake, denitrification, and sulfate reduction in anoxic modes were simultaneously occured because of the presence of the polyphosphate accumultating organism(PAO) that utilize nitrate and sulfate as an electron acceptor in the anoxic zone. Denitrirying phosphorous removal bacteria(DPB) was enriched under anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic condition with a nitrate as an electron acceptor, and desulfating phosphorous removal bacteria(DSPB) was enriched under anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic condition with a sulfate as an electron acceptor. Polyphosphate accumulating organism(PAO) were enriched in the anaerobic/aerobic SBR. PAO took up acetate faster than DPB and DSPB during the aerobic phase. The sludge with nitrate and sulfate as an electron acceptors grew as a granules which possessed high activity and good settleability. In the anaerobic/aerobic modes, typical floccular growth was observed. In the result of bench-scale experiment, simultaneous reactions of phosphorus uptake, denitrification and sulfate reduction were observed under anoxic condition with nitrate and sulfate as an electron acceptors. These results demonstrated that the anaerobic/anoxic modes with nitrate and sulfate as an electron acceptors played an important role in the formation of the sludge granulation.

  • This study examined the wastewater at a livestock farm, and found that the dairy wastewater from the milking parlor had a lower concentration than the piggery wastewater, and that it was produced at a rate under 1.3 ㎥/day in a single farmhouse. The amount of dairy wastewater was determined based on the performance of the milking machine, the maintenance method of the milking parlor, and the amount of milk production allocated for each farmhouse, not by the area. The results confirmed that both dairy wastewater treatment processes, specifically those using Hanged Bio-Compactor (HBC) and Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR), can fully satisfy the water quality standards of discharge. The dairy wastewater has a lower amount and concentration than piggery wastewater, meaning it is less valuable as liquid fertilizer, but it can be easily degraded using the conventional activated sludge process in a public sewage treatment plant. Therefore, discharging the dairy wastewater after individual treatment was expected to be a more reasonable method than consigning it to the centralized wastewater treatment plant. The effluent after the SBR process showed a lower degree of color than the HBC effluent, which was attributed to biological adsorption. In the case of the milking parlor in the livestock farm, the concentrations of the effluents obtained after HBC and SBR treatments both satisfied water quality standards for the discharge of public livestock wastewater treatment plants at 99% confidence intervals, and the concentrations of total nitrogen and phosphorous in untreated wastewater were even lower than the water quality standards of discharge. Therefore, we need to discuss strengthening the water quality standards to reduce environmental pollution.

  • This study is performed to examine the removal efficiency of organic materials,$NH_4-N$ and P in Swine-Wastewater Treatment using Hybrid-process. It named SBR process, Hybrid-process as RunI(SBR), and Run II(Struvite Tank-SBR), and compared the removal efficiency of each Run. The removal efficiency of the organic materials in each Run is like this; In Run I, TS, VS and COD was 43%, 39%, and 70%, respectively. And in Run II, TS VS, and COD was 52%, 52%, and 82%, respectively. It shows that the removal efficiency of Run II using Strutive Tank is higher. And as for the removal efficiency of $NH_4-N$ and T-P in each Run, Run II using Strutive Tank was 90% and 57%, higher than 56% and 49% of RunI. Especially for $NH_4-N$, Run II showed much higher efficiency, and this proved that Strutive Tank was very efficient process of all for the removal of N and P. As a result of this study, Hybrid-process that combines Strutive Tank and SBR is proved to be a very good process in Swine Wastewater Treatment.

  • A bench-scale reactor using SBR process was experimented with an synthetic wastewater. The main purpose of this investigation was to evaluate applicability in the field and process removal efficiencies in terms of BOD and T-P and its corresponding kinetic parameters. Removal rate of phosphorus was 77% in terms of total phosphorus. Effluent concentrations were $9.8mg/{\ell}$ BOD and $1.1mg/{\ell}$ T-P. Effluent quality was maintained consistently stable by controlling decant volume and operating cycles. The efficiency for phosphorus removal was increased due to decrease in BOD-SS loading value in the range of $0.25{\leq}$aeration time ratio${\leq}0.52$.

  • Pilot-scale PSSBR(Phase Separated Sequencing Batch Reactor) was operated to evaluate requirement of external carbon sources(${\Delta}gCOD/{\Delta}gNO_3^{-}-N$) in denitrification. Methanol and fermented food waste were used as external carbon sources. Methanol and fermented food waste were fed to the anoxic state of first reactor and concentration were 50 and 40 mgCOD/L on the basis of concentration in reactor, respectively. In case that external carbon source was not used, average $NO_3^{-}-N$ concentration in effluent was 22.49 mg/L. When methanol and fermented food waste were fed, average $NO_3^{-}-N$ concentration in effluent were 10.13 mg/L and 6.3 mg/L, respectively and requirement of external carbon sources were 4.04 and 2.5 ${\Delta}gCOD/{\Delta}gNO_3^{-}-N$, respectively. Fermented food waste was better than methanol in denitrification efficiency. Therefore fermented food waste could be one of the excellent external carbon sources for nitrogen removal in biological nutrient removal process.
