  • Flow and scalar dispersion around Cheomseongdae are numerically investigated using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with the renormalization group (RNG) $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence closure scheme. Cheomseongdae is an ancient astronomical observatory in Gyeongju, Korea, and is chosen as a model obstacle because of its unique shape, that is, a cylinder-shaped architectural structure with its radius varying with height. An interesting feature found is a mid-height saddle point behind Cheomseongdae. Different obstacle shapes and corresponding flow convergences help to explain the presence of the saddle point. The predicted size of recirculation zone formed behind Cheomseongdae increases with increasing ambient wind speed and decreases with increasing ambient turbulence intensity. The relative roles of inertial and eddy forces in producing cavity flow zones around an obstacle are conceptually presented. An increase in inertial force promotes flow separation. Consequently, cavity flow zones around the obstacle expand and flow reattachment occurs farther downwind. An increase in eddy force weakens flow separation by mixing momentum there. This results in the contraction of cavity flow zones and flow reattachment occurs less far downwind. An increase in ambient wind speed lowers predicted scalar concentration. An increase in ambient turbulence intensity lowers predicted maximum scalar concentration and acts to distribute scalars evenly.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study the possibility of practical use of gasoline-methanol mixed fuel as an alternative fuel of gasoline engines in the light of engine performances and harmful exhaust emissions as well as mixings and separations of the mixed fuels. When the methanol of 99.8% purity is mixed with super or regular gasoline available on the market today, the experimental results obtained without modifying carburetor in this study are as follows; 1.The separation ratio depends upon the gasoline-methanol mixing ratio only, regardless of fuel temperature and fuel additives for preventing separation of phase. 2.The critical absorption ratio is affected by the gasoline-methanol mixing ratio, its temperature and the quantity of fuel additives. 3.Concerning the distillation temperature, the initial point of all sorts of fuels is almost same, but 10% point and 35-60% point of mixed fuels are lower than those of gasoline only. 4.In case of throttle valve opening set, engine output using the mixed fuels is decreased compared to gasoline, but thermal efficiency is increased as a consequence of decreasing specific energy consumption. 5.In case of fixed load test, thermal efficiency is increased at low engine speed even under low part-load as well as under comparatively high part-load including full load. 6.CO and NOx emissions are reduced remarkably with the mixed fuels.

  • This study is aimed to suggest the method, color channel seperation, can match the common points in real-time automatically. Image coordinates which was calculated from the acquired image with CCDcamera in this study is checked with two methods; check the accuracy of image coordinate and common point matching through correct sort. In conclusion of check, The RMSE of object coordinate which is calculated by photogrammetry program with image coordinate is in the expect RMSE of close-range photogrammetry, and Match-ing of common point is also performed correctly by using sort. For these reason, this color channel separation method is adequate for the acquisition of accurate image coordinates and the matching of the common points. I think that this method will be useful for the fields of industry which need fast-correct processing with acquired information in real-time.

  • An analysis of laminar mixed convection flow adjacent to the inclined flat surface which is subjected to a uniform temperature in a uniform free stream is performed. Nonsimilar boundary layed equation are derived by using the mixed convection parameters such that smooth transition from the purely forced convection limit to the purely free convection limit is possible. The governing equations are solved by a finite difference method using the coupled box scheme of sixth order. Numerical results are presented for prandtl numbers of 0.7 and 7 with the angle of inclination ranging from 0 to 90 degree from the vertical. The velocity distributions for the buoyancy assisting flow exhibit a significant overshoot above the free stream value in the region of intense mixed convection and the velocity field is found to be more sensitive to the buoyancy effect than the temperature field. The separation point near the wall was obtained for the buoyancy opposing flow. The local Nusselt number increases for buoyancy assisting flow and decreases for opposing flow with increasing value of the local Grashoff number in the mixed convection parameter. For large Prandtl number, the Nusselt number and the friction factor decrease significantly near the separation point. Present numerical predictions are in good agreement with recent experimental results by Ramachandran.

  • LE-7A is the main engine of the H-IIA launch vehicle. Under its development, the nozzle suffered from two troubles during startup and shutdown transients of the engine. One is a large side load, which damages the actuator of the nozzle, and the other is damage on regenerative cooling tubes due to high heat load. It has been considered that these problems are caused by a peculiar separation pattern called Restricted Shock Separation (RSS). RSS is observed in several rocket nozzles, for example, LE-7A nozzle, Vulcain nozzle and so on. Their contours are not conventional truncated perfect (TP) nozzle - LE-7A nozzle is a compressed truncated perfect (CTP) nozzle and Vulcain nozzle is a thrust optimized (TO) nozzle. Although it is believed that the occurrence of RSS is affected by the nozzle contour, the mechanisms are not clarified sufficiently yet. In the present paper, a parametric numerical study is carried out to investigate the mechanisms of the occurrence of RSS in CTP nozzles during startup transient. The results show that RSS is caused by the adverse pressure gradient downstream of the Mach disk. The adverse pressure gradient is caused by the interaction of the pressure wave and Mach disk. The method to avoid the occurrence of RSS is also examined. A small step inside the nozzle affects the position of the separation point and prevents RSS. The result shows that the possibility that RSS can be suppressed by controlling the position of the separation point.

  • Laminar separation bubble and transitional flow over an airfoil are investigated at a moderate range of Reynolds numbers. In this research, a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes code is coupled with an empirical transition model that can predict transition onset points and the length of transition region. Without solving the boundary layer equations, approximated e-N method is directly applied to the RANS code and iteratively solved together. The computational results are compared with the experimental data for NACA0012 airfoil. Results of transition onset point and length are compared well with experimental and XFOIL prediction. In high angle of attack the present RANS results show better agreement than XFOIL results using the boundary layer equations.

  • Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)(EVA) microspheres were prepared by a thermally induced phase separation. The microsphere formation occurred by the nucleation and growth mechanism in the metastable region. The diluent used was toluene. The microsphere formation and growth was followed by the cloud point of the optical microscope measurement. The microsphere size distribution, which was obtained by SEM observation and particle size analyzer, became broader when the polymer concentration was higher, the content of vinyl acetate in EVA copolymer was higher, and the cooling rate of EVA copolymer solution was lower.

  • One of the premier mechanisms used in extracting unobserved signals from observed mixtures in signal processing is employing a blind source separation (BSS) algorithm. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques are playing a prominent role in the sphere of multicarrier communication. A set of remedial solutions taken to mitigate deteriorative effects caused within the air interface of OFDM transmission with aid of BSS schemes is presented. Four energy functions are used in deriving the filter coefficients. Energy criterion functions to be optimized and the performance is justified. These functions together with iterative fixed point rule for receive signal are used in determining the filter coefficients. Time correlation properties of the channel are taken advantage for BSS. It is tried to remove colored noise and jamming components from themixture at the receiver. Themethod is tested in a slow fading channel with a receiver containing equal gain combining to treat the channel state information values. The importance is that, these are quite low computational complexity mechanisms.

  • In this paper, we propose Adaptive Group Separation(AGS) algorithm for efficient RFID system. AGS algorithm determines the optimized initial prefix size m, and divides the group of $2^m$. A reader requests the group and searches the tag ID. If a tag collision occurred, reader adds a one bit, '0' or '1' at first bit of collision point. As a result, we observe that transmitted data bits and the recognition time are decreased.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the technique of energy recovery and energy saving by using the optimization of heat exchanger network synthesis. This article proposes a new method of determining the optimal target of a heat exchanger network synthesis problem of which data feature multiple pinch points. The system separation method we suggest here is to subdivide the original system into independent subsystems with one pinch point. The optimal cost target was evaluated and the original pinch rules at each subsystem were employed. The software developed in this study was applied to the Alko prosess, which is an alcohol production process, for the synthesis of heat exchanger network. It was possible to save about 15% of the total annual cost.
