  • The method of removing micro-plastics from sea water has been developed using electro-magnetic force. Plastics are difficult to decompose and put a great load on the marine environment. Especially a plastic with a size of 5 mm or less is defined as micro-plastic and are carried by ocean currents over long distances, causing global pollution. These are not easily decomposed in the natural environment. The Lorentz force was generated in simulated sea water and its reaction force was applied to the micro-plastic to control their motion. Lorentz force was generated downward and the reaction force to the plastics was upward. The plastic used in the experiment was polystyrene with a diameter of 6 mm, and the density was 1.07 g/cm3. The polystyrene sphere levitated at the current density of 0.83 A/cm2 and the external field of 0.87T. The particle trajectory calculation was also made to design separation system using superconducting magnet.

  • This paper presents the optimal shape of microelectrode that generates dielectrophoretic(DEP) force to separate particles in homogeneous medium. The principle of the particles sorting is based on the use of the relative strengths of negative DEP (nDEP) and drag forces, as in a general DEP-activated cell sorter (DACS). To numerically calculate the DEP force and drag force, the simulation is implemented in MATLAB 7.0. The properties of particles, which are used in simulation, are similarly selected as those of cells to apply cell separation. The most optimized shape of electrode is selected by numerical simulation according to a variety of electrode shape such as rectangle, trapezoidal, and right-triangle. Through, in addition, parameter study, we found that applied frequency is more significant factor on the separation than various parameters, such as applied voltage and permittivity of medium, that decide on the strength of DEP force.

  • While a caisson used for breakwater is carried by a floating dock, accompanying stability problem by its existing motions in the dock is quite important and should be pre-checked against sea environmental condition. In the stability analysis, the acceleration, velocity, angle of roll and pitch motions are important to calculate frictional force and separation force. If separation force becomes bigger than frictional force, serious collision may be occurred between caisson and floating dock. In this study, stability evaluation during the transportation of a caisson on floating dock for breakwater was performed by using a commercial program, HydroD and CHARM3D/HARP.

  • The applicability of the two types of magnetic separation system, high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) and Magneto Archimedes method were studied considering the magnetic susceptibility of targeted substances. It was noted that the combination of the two methods can control the almost all the substances, paramagnetic and diamagnetic in addition to ferromagnetic substances. The principle of the methods was given and the conceput of the magnet force control technology is discussed. The practical applications of the technique were introduced together with the new application of HGMS.

  • A particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was employed to investigate the effects of blowing jet on the flow characteristics over stationary and pitch-oscillating airfoils. The Reynolds number was $7.84{\times}10^5$ based on the chord length. It was found that for stationary airfoil cases, continuous and pulsating blowing jets successfully reduced separated wake region at high angles of attack. A comparison study of two different types of jet blowing indicated that pulsating jet is more effective than continuous jet for flow separation control. Pulsating leading-edge blowing postpones flow separation and increased stall angle of attack by $2^{\circ}{\sim}3^{\circ}$. For pitch-oscillating airfoil cases, the PIV results showed that blowing jet efficiently delays the separation onset point during pitch-up stroke, whereas it does not prevent flow separation during pitch-down stroke, even at angles of attack smaller than static ones.

  • This paper presents the inertial force problem of ultrahigh-speed injection molding machine using linear motors, and presents its solutions. To make very thin products by injection molding, very high injection speed is required, and linear motors are used for this purpose. However, direct drive by linear motors may cause brief nozzle separation from the sprue bushing because of the inertia force which is as large as the total output thrust of the linear motors, and this momentary separation can cause molten plastic to leak. In this paper, two solutions are proposed for this inertia force problem. One is the mechanical cancellation of the inertia force, and the other is to increase the nozzle contact force. With the latter solution, the stationary platen bending worsens, so a new nozzle contact mechanism is also proposed, which can prevent the stationary platen bending.

  • The effect of the electromagnetic force (or Lorentz force) on the flow behavior around a circular cylinder is investigated by computation. Two-dimensional unsteady flow computation for Re=10$^2$is carried out using a numerical method of finite difference approximation in a curvilinear body-fitted coordinate system by solving the momentum equations including the Lorentz force as a body force. The effect of spatial variations of the Lorentz forcing region and forcing direction along the cylinder circumference is investigated. The numerical results show that the Lorentz force can effectively suppress the flow separation and oscillation of the lift force of circular cylinder cross-flow, leading to reduction of drag.

  • The practical use of superconducting magnets is limited to medical equipment, energy equipment and the like. Therefore, it does not fully utilize the superior features of superconducting magnet or magnetic force. In order to overcome this blockage condition, The international Forum on Magnetic Force Control (IFMFC) was launched in Tokyo in 2010 by the magnetic separation researchers in Japan, Korea and China. The policy is to hold around the country every year, to apply the application to the engineering field of magnetic force utilization and information exchange about the development of applied science to mutual visit of researchers and to develop the application field of superconducting magnets in particular. The main object is to review the field of application of magnetic force with respect to published papers at 8 IFMFCs, and to introduce the trend of research forum utilizing strong magnetic force which is rare in the world. The United Nations is asking each country to achieve Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) targets for 2030. This IFMFC review will be utilized in this field.

  • In this paper, the slab method have been applied to investigate the strip casting process in which hot coil is produced from molten steel directly. In the twin roll strip casting process, molten steel supplied by the nozzle cools and solidifies due to the heat extraction effect of the rolls and hot rolling of the solidified shell takes place simultaneously. The analysis of hot rolling has been carried out by using the existing results of solidification analysis for the twin roll strip casting process. The current slab method provides basic design data such as roll separation force, rolling torque, rolling power as well as end dam separation force which are required to design strip caster. The effect of friction on the basic process parameters are investigated also. It is shown that the use of appropriate friction coefficient is important and that the characteristics of hot rolling in the twin-roll strip casting process is quite different from the conventional hot rolling processes.
