This study was carried out to evaluate the Physicochemical characteristics of mined waste(separated waste and soil) and to predict environmental effect of an old landfill site located at north of Seoul. Municipal solid waster(MSW) had been disposed of at the old landfill site used in this study for about 2 years(1990-1992). The old landfill site selected for this study had accepted mainly municipal solid waste. The landfill-mined waste contained separated waste (40.9%) and soil(59.1%) by wet weight basis. The separated waste consisted of combustible(91.0%) and non-combustible(9.0%). The combustible waste was mainly non-biodegradable plastics. The low heating value of the separated combustible waste, which is calculated by Dulong's equation, was as high as 3,470kcal/kg. According to the Korean Extraction Procedure, separated waste and soil were proved to be not hazardous. The total content of heavy metal in the separated waste and soil met standard of California State, USA. Therefore the separated waste may be relandfilled at a sanitary landfill site and/or burned up at an incinerator, and the separated old soil may be used ad landfill cover-soil at a sanitary landfill site. Water quality of two streams was grade IV, of which water could be used as industrial and agricultural water. The streams near the landfill site might not be contaminated by leachate from the old landfill site. It was estimated that organic matter in the old landfill site would not be actively biodegraded within a short period of time.
This investigation was carried out to study on the generation property, management and seperate collection rate of solid waste in the Gu-Gok Falls. Generation rate of solid waste was 80.785kg/day and unit waste generation rates was $65.55g/day{\cdot}tourist$ one person. Physical component of solid waste were garbage 46%, papers 20%, empty bottles 10%, respectively. A plan is required to decrease generation rate of garbage waste. As result to investigate separated garbage can, papers and can were separated more than 60%. But empty bottles and scrap iron were separated less than 50%. P.E.T, steel can, aluminum can and empty bottles were 20% of total generation rate, and profit of reuse is \700,800/year.
This study was performed to study utilization of separated carbohydrates as well as separation, following analysis of the major components and separation of the carbohydrates in waste liquors of SP, KP, ASAM and AS. The leachate recirculation anaerobic digestion system has the advantage of stable methane gas generation compared with existing one phase systems. In this study, an anaerobic digestion system fed with source separated food waste from school cafeteria was studied with different food waste/inoculum anaerobic sludge volume ratios (8:2, 3:7, 2:8). From this study, leachate recirculation anaerobic reactor with food waste/inoculum anaerobic sludge volume ratio of 2:8 that is 9 gVS/L of OLR(Organic Loading Rate) had the highest gas production. Also this anaerobic reactor showed daily decrease of H2S and NH3 contents in produced gas. Average biogas yield was 1.395 m3 Biogas/kg VS added. Other anaerobic reactors with food waste/inoculum anaerobic sludge volume ratio of 8:2 and 3:7 stopped methane gas production.

Synroc which comprises hollandite-rich ($Ba_{1-x}Cs_{2x}\;(Al_yTi_{2-y})\;Ti_{6}O_{16},\;75wt\%$), perovskite ($Ca_{1-x}Sr_xTiO_3,\;15wt\%$) and rutile ($TiO_2,\;10wt\%$) is devised for the immobilization of Sr/Cs (1:3, wt$\%$) separated from HLW liquid. Especially, hollandite-rich Synroc with different contents of Al element is fabricated, and its mineral phase assemblage and microstructure are determined by using XRD and SEM/EDS. The durability test is carried out by using MCC-1 method, leachate is analyzed by using ICP/MS and ICP/ AES. The results indicate that hollandite-rich Synroc variants is a suitable host for Immobilization of Sr/Cs separated from HLW liquid.
Improvements were made in the study for the design of the conventional Eddy Current Separator (ECS) used for separating small sized non-ferrous particles in the waste. These improvements include decreasing the air gap between the material and magnetic drum, making the drum position adjustable and placing the splitter closer to the drum. Thus, small particles were separated with high efficiency. The magnetic drum was removed from inside the ECS conveyor belt system as design change and was placed as a separate unit. Hence, the force generated on the test material increased by about 5.5 times while the air gap between the non-ferrous materials and drum decreased from 3 mm to 1 mm. The non-metal material in the waste is separated before the drum in the novel design. Whereas non-ferrous metal particles are separated by falling into the splitter as a result of the force generated as soon as the particles fall on the drum. Every material that passes through the drum can be recycled as a result of moving the splitter closer to the contact point of the drum. In addition, the drum can also be used for the efficient separation of large particles since its position can be adjusted according to the size of the waste material. The performance of the novel design ECS was verified via analytical approaches, finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental studies.
Limonene was separated from waste citrus peels by a vacuum drying process with a venturi, and bioethanol was produced from dried citrus peels. Vacuum drying using venturi was very effective in removing moisture and limonene compared to hot air drying and natural drying. Citrus peels prepared by venturi vacuum drying were the most suitable for ethanol fermentation. The moisture and limonene content of the citrus peels dried for 15 hours were 17.0% and 3.2%, respectively. By venturi vacuum drying, essential oil containing limonene and floral water were obtained, respectively. The amount of essential oil separated by venturi vacuum drying was 4.21 mL essential oil/kg citrus peel, 79.9% of the separated essential oil was limonene.

In order to generate a renewable energy-Methane, anaerobic systems fed with source separated food waste from university cafeteria were studied. At first, four reactors were evaluated with same feed components; content non-mixing anaerobic reactor without leachate withdrawal/recirculation, content mixing anaerobic reactor without leachate withdrawal/recirculation, content non-mixing anaerobic reactor with leachate withdrawal/recirculation and content mixing anaerobic reactor with leachate withdrawal/recirculation. From the first study, content non-mixing anaerobic reactor with leachate withdrawal/recirculation showed the highest gas production. From further study with this system, it was observed that leachate permeation rate within anaerobic reactor was very important factor for gas generation. The higher permeation rate, the more gas production was observed. It is assumed that 1kg of gas collector weight and C/N ration above 10 in food waste may cause gas consumption in the anaerobic reactor. The gas consumption was estimated by negative pressure build-up at gas collector. The negative pressure build-up must be explained to produce Methane from Food Waste.

The study is carried out to survey the proper management and to propose an eco - friendly separation system through efficient screening and resource recovery of excavated materials containing waste from various excavating fields such as reconstruction of landfill sites for reuse, reclamation of unsanitary landfill and residential land development of waste dumping sites. The current status and screening process and analytical characteristics of the excavated materials containing waste were reviewed. Through the analysis of the samples such as separated combustibles, recyclable soils and residues collected from the on-site visits we were able to understand the characteristics of separated materials and excavated materials containing waste such as calorific value, elementary composition, TOC, foreign material content and LOI. It has been found that elimination of the moisture of excavations, removal of attached soil from the surfaces of the excavated combustibles and the quantitative supply method of the input devices are the main operating factors as essential factors for the optimal separation of excavated materials containing waste. For efficient management and recycling of excavated materials containing, it is necessary to set criteria of ash content in separated combustibles and criteria organic matter content in separated soils.
The preparation of skin care gauze could be make to mixing separated cellulose from waste milk pack and degummed silk fibroin fiber. Also, its wound covering and anti-bacterial activity were investigated in order to find out the enhancement of their functionality. By the 30% silk fibroin fiber including skin care gauze, the anti-bacterial activity values of Staphylococcus strain are much 4 times higher than of 0∼10% silk fibroin fiber including skin care gauze. The average yield of cellulose from waste milk pack was obtained 50-60%, and their morphologies, physical properties, modulus and biodegradation ratios are studies, respectively.
