Despite the massive effort which has been given to the analysis of the base flows, one commonly occurring case seems to be overlooked. This is for base (rearward facing surface) which is between a subsonic flow and supersonic flow. Potential flows of the air and gas streams are computed for the flow past a separated wake. Then a viscous jet mixing is superimposed on this inviscid solution. Conservation of mass, momentum and energy is achieved by multiple iterations. Despite the iterations, the wake flow field is computed with modest computer requirements.
Purpose of the present study is to develop a computational design program for shape optimization, combining the numerical optimization technique with the flow analysis code. The present methodology is then validated in three cases of aerodynamic shape optimization. In the numerical optimization, a feasible direction optimization algorithm and shape functions are considered. In the flow analysis, the Navier-Stokes equations are discretized by a cell-centered finite volume method, and Roe's flux difference splitting TVD scheme and ADI method are used. The developed design code is applied to a transonic channel flow over a bump, and an external flow over a NACA0012 airfoil to minimize the wave drag induced by shock waves. Also a separated subsonic flow over a NACA0024 airfoil is considered to determine a maximum allowable thickness of the airfoil without separation.
It is known that previous models are unsatisfactory in predicting adverse pressure gradient turbulent flows. In the present paper, a revised low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ model is proposed. In this model, a newly developed term is added lo the dissipation rate equation. In order to reflect appropriate effects for an adverse pressure gradient. The added tenn is derived by considering the distribution of mean velocity and turbulent properties in the turbulent flow with, adverse pressure gradient. The new $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was applied to calculations of flat plate flow with adverse pressure gradient, conical diffuser flow and backward facing step flow. It was found that the three numerical results showed better agreement than other models compared with DNS results and experimental ones.
The flow field around a symmetrical airfoil in a uniform flow under the generation of noise was studied by experiments and numerical simulation. The experiments are conducted by visualizing the surface flow over the airfoil with a shear-sensitive liquid-crystal coating and by measuring the instantaneous velocity field around the trailing edge of the airfoil. The results indicate that the discrete frequency noise is generated when the separated laminar flow reattaches near the trailing edge of the pressure side and the turbulent boundary layer is formed over the suction side of the airfoil near the trailing edge. The periodic behavior of vortex formation was observed around the trailing edge and it persists further downstream in the wake. The frequency of the vortex formation in the wake was consistent with that of the discrete frequency noise.
A grid-based hydrological model, CELTHYM, capable of estimating base flow and surface runoff using only readily available data, was used to assess hydrologic impacts caused by land use change on Little Eagle Creek (LEC) in Central Indiana. Using time periods when land use data are available, the model was calibrated with two years of observed stream flow data, 1983-1984, and verified by comparison of model predictions with observed stream flow data for 1972-1974 and 1990-1992. Stream flow data were separated into direct runoff and base flow using HYSEP (USGS) to estimate the impacts of urbanization on each hydrologic component. Analysis of the ratio between direct runoff and total runoff from simulation results, and the change in these ratios with land use change, shows that the ratio of direct runoff increases proportionally with increasing urban area. The ratio of direct runoff also varies with annual rainfall, with dry year ratios larger than those for wet years shows that urbanization might be more harmful during dry years than abundant rainfall years in terms of water yield and water quality management.
A numerical investigation on the turbulent flows over a three-dimensional steep hill is presented. The numerical model developed for the present work is based on the finite volume method and the SIMPLE algorithm with a non-staggered grid system. Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and Shih's non-linear model are tested for the validation of the prediction accuracy in the 3D separated flow. Comparisons of the mean velocity and turbulence profiles between the numerical predictions and the measurements show good agreement. The Shih's non-linear model is found to predict mean flow and turbulence better than the Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$. Flow patterns have also been examined to explain the difference in the cavity zone between 2D and 3D hills.
Decades of studies of geophysical flow have unveiled that the flow downstream of obstacles in stratified flow consists of attached wake and strong gravity waves, or separated, fluctuating wake and persistent late wakes. Among unique and interesting characteristics of the stratified flow past obstacles is the generation of coherent vortex in the late wake far downstream of the object. Unlike in homogeneous fluid, the flow field downstream self-develops coherent vortex even after diminishing of the near wake, no matter how small the stratification is. This paper present a computational approach to simulate the generation of the coherent vortex structure in the late wake of a moving sphere submerged in weakly stratified fluid. The results are in consistent with several experimental observations and the vortex stretching mechanism is employed to explain the process of coherence.
Secondary instability in an obstructed channel is investigated using direct numerical simulation. Flow geometry under consideration is a plane channel with two-dimensional thin obstacles mounted symmetrically in the vertical direction and periodically in the streamwise direction. Flow separation occurs at the tip of the sharp obstacles. As a basic flow, we consider an unsteady periodic solution which results from Hopf bifurcation. Depending on the Reynolds number, the basic flow becomes unstable to three-dimensional disturbances, which results in a chaotic flow. Numerical results obtained are consistent with experimental findings currently available.
Two-dimensional Stokes flows through a micro channel with a couple of symmetric vertical fins are investigated. At far up- and down-stream from the fins, the plane Poiseuille flow exists in the channel. The slip boundary conditions are applied to take account of the Knudsen number effects. For the analysis, the method of eigen function expansion and collocation method are employed. By the results, the streamline patterns and pressure distributions are shown and the force exerted on the fin and the excess pressure drop due to the fins are determined as functions of the length of the fin and Knudsen number. It may be conjectured that the force and the excess pressure drop are almost independent of the Knudsen number.
A flow modeling method has been developed to analyze the flow in the annular base (rear- facing surface) of a circular engine nacelle flying at subsonic speed but with a supersonic exhaust jet. Real values of exhaust gas properties and temperature at an altitude of 30, 000 feet are employed. Potential flows of the air and gas streams are computed for the flow past a separated wake. Then a viscous jet mixing is superimposed on this inviscid solution. Conserva- tion of mass, momentum and energy for the wake flow field is achieved by multiple iterations with modest computer requirements.
