  • Polyhydroxystilbenes including resveratrol were reported to competitively inhibit monoamine oxidase-A-without structural relation with substrates and cynthetic inhibitors for the enzyme. We attempt to explore a plausible mechanism for their inhibitory activity on MAO-A. All the polyhydroxystilbenes tested showed the antioxidant activity on liver homogenate. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity turned out to closely correlate with the MAO-A inhibitory activity.

  • Carvomethone, (+) pulegone, (-)isopulegol and (-) menthone, which are natural and widely distributed in the plantkingdom, were examined for their Lens Aldose Reductase inhibitory effects. All monoterpenes tested showed that the mild inhibitory effects. Inhibition percents of four monoterpenes were in the range of 23-42% at $10^{-3}M$ and 5-21% at $10^{-4}M$.

  • By using recemic 3-bromo-5-isobutyl-5-methylhydantoin (3a') in dry N, N-dimethylformamide which is a model reagent for asymmetric bromolactonization, bromolactonization of a series of olefinic acids was carried out to furnish corresponding bromolactones in moderate yields.
