  • To ease traffic congestion Seoul Metropolitan Government formulated the 2nd Phase of Seoul Subway Construction Scheme in 1989. The scheme calls for the construction of %60 km of subway which includes addition of 4 more subway lines and extension of 3 existing subway lines in addition to the existing 118 km of subway. As a final stage of the scheme subway line 6 is under planning and design. The line 6 is 36.1 km-long route connecting Ungam-Samgakchi-Changsin-Sinnae. Except for the depot main line wilts be underground and major construction methods are cut and cover and tunnelling. As a tunnelling method New Austrian Tunnelling Method will be adapted. The line will be opened by the end of 1997. With the completion of the line Seoul will have 278 km of subway network and the transport share by subway will be increased from 25% in 1992 to 50% in 1997.

  • We as a civil investment enterprise have been constructing In-cheon International Airport Railway which is a transportation means to approach In-cheon International Airport. In this alignment. a section between the Seoul station and Ka-joa follows the existing Yong-san line at the center of Seoul city and traverses Seoul subway 2,5,6 lines. So we planned that the alignment would have the shallowest depth to lie under Kyung-eui line and above the airport railroad. The alignment is planned to construct an open-box structure only 3.6m apart from the subway line 5 tunnel structure and construct the open-box structure 0.7m apart from the subway line 2 box structure. In the line planning, we investigated both the security of the existing subway structures during and after construction and the stability and workability between newly structured tunnel structures with three dimensions numerical analysis methods. Also we raised the reliability of design verification which was achieved by specialty society's review on the planned construction method.

  • The suspended particulate matter(PM) was measured in subway tunnel of Seoul Line 1 to 9 in order to evaluate the pollution degree and characteristics of the PM in the subway tunnel. Also, to analyze the effect of outdoor aerosol concentration on the PM concentration of subway tunnels, the ambient PM concentration around the subway station was extracted by spatial analysis using $PM_{10}$ data of Seoul air pollution monitoring network. Finally, in order to understand pollution pattern in the Seoul subway tunnels, cluster analysis was performed based on input data set such as PM levels in tunnel, tunnel depth, length, curvature radius, outdoor ambient air pollution levels and so on. The average concentration of $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, and $PM_1$ on subway tunnels were $98.0{\pm}37.4$, $78.4{\pm}28.7$, and $56.9{\pm}19.2{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. As a result of the cluster analysis, tunnels from Seoul subway Line-1 to Line-9 were classified into five classes, and the concentrations and physical properties of the tunnels were compared. This study can provide a method to reduce PM concentration in tunnel for each pollution pattern and provide basic information about air quality control in Seoul subway tunnel.

  • Currently, subway is becoming a major part of transportation and living environment in large cities such as Seoul or Hong Kong. As the numbers of subway lines and stations increase, visual cues indicating places are needed for users with various destinations, and environmental colors as well as line colors can be expected as effective informations for easy wayfinding. The purpose of this study is to understand the current color applications in terms of creating regional differentiation and informing subway lines in the transfer stations of Seoul and Hong Kong, by field investigation. The investigation has been proceed on 24 transfer stations from February to April, 2009 by taking photos and measuring environmental colors using Minolta spectrophotometer CM-2600d. As a result, regional differentiation in color application appeared generally low in both Seoul and Hong Kong but various 'hues' differing each station are used in Hong Kong, compared to limited use of 'hues' in Seoul, In terms of 'value', the rate of Seoul appeared lightly higher than that of Hong Kong, and the use of medium high rate of 'saturation' of main and secondary colors are shown as a remarkable character of Hong Kong.

  • This paper details methods used to verify the adquacy of a dc traction power supply for design in Seoul matropolitain subway Line-6 system. Examples of the approach are given for a major subway presently under construction. The performance of trains operating at maximum system design capacity is modelled using a train simulation program. Using a dc network analyser program, the maximum train operating timetable, and a model of the ac and dc electrical suppy system, the electrical performance of the entire system can be modelled over a 24-hour period. The results of this analysis are used to determime: train voltage at a level sufficient to ensure train schedules: adequacy of traction transformers, rectifier, and switchgear ratings; sizes of the overhead contact systern conductors, and ac and de feeder cables: and power and energy demands at the utility company's supply points for inital and final timetable operations.

  • In this study, we analyzed the effect of the Eungam Loop Line of Seoul Subway Line 6 on the sale price of adjacent row and multi-family houses on the accessibility and structural characteristics of subway stations. This study empirically analyzed a total of 17,938 cases from 2006 to 2017 based on data on the sale price of row and multi-family houses. In summary, the results of this study using the Hedonic Price Model are as follows. First, this study confirms that the Eungam Loop Line characteristics have a positive effect on the sale price as it is adjacent to the subway station. It is noteworthy that the sale price of 100-200m segment has a positive effect, and the sale price of Bulgwang station, which has excellent mobility and connectivity with CBD, YBD and GBD, has a positive effect. Second, this study shows the locational characteristics such as distance to bus stop, distance to mart, and distance to school have influence on the sale price. Third, this study finds the land characteristics such as land area, land shape, land facing, and road width, have significant effects on the sale price. Fourth, this study discovers the sale price is also is also affected by building and floor characteristics such as the type of housing, building area, the number of households, building age, elevator, and floor level.

  • To effectively reduce PM10 generated in concourses and platforms of subway stations, a research is being conducted to find the PM10 source. The main source of PM10 in subway stations was PM10 generated in the main line tunnels, which was generated in proportion to the frequency of the train operation. Each amount of the PM10 generated when the train was operated once, was constant regardless of the time. On the assumption that the PM10 level in a tunnel of a line is a sum of newly generated amount of dust when the subway passes and the amount carried from the adjacent stations by the wind generated from the subway rolling stocks, the method which estimates the intensive PM10 occurring section was developed and applied to the 12 stations between Cheongdam and Jangseungbaegi in Seoul Subway Line 7.

  • The subway is a public transportation that many people use every day. Line 2 especially has the most crowded stations during the day. However, the risk of crush accidents is increasing due to high congestion during rush hour and this reduces the safety and comfort of passengers. Subway congestion prediction is helpful to forestall problems caused by high congestion. Therefore, this study proposes machine learning classification models that predict subway congestion during commuting time. To predict congestion in Line 2 based in machine learning, we investigate variables that affect subway congestion through previous research and collect a dataset of subway congestion on Line 2 during rush hour from PUBLIC DATA PORTAL. The proposed model is expected to establish the subway operation plane to make passengers safe and satisfied.

  • The subway is the major public transportation system in Seoul with 2.2 million people using it everyday. Indoor air pollution in the subway can be a significant part of population exposure because of the number of people using the subway, time spent in transit and potentially high exposure for certain pollutants. The Korea Ministry of Environment has established the level 2 of recommended standards of $PM_{10}$ and $CO_2$ in subway trains. The aims of this study were to determine the airborne levels of $PM_{10}$, $CO_2$ and any correlation between pollutant levels and number of passenger in a subway train. The airborne $PM_{10}$ and $CO_2$ were measured on the inside of trains on line #4 for 4 different days from October to November in 2008. Average $PM_{10}$ and $CO_2$ levels were $113{\pm}25{\mu}g/m^3$ and $1402{\pm}442$ ppm, respectively. These levels did not exceed the level 2 of recommended standards of $250{\mu}g/m^3$ for $PM_{10}$ and 3500 ppm for $CO_2$. $PM_{10}$ level was not correlated with the number of passengers, while $CO_2$ levels were positively correlated with the number of passengers. The findings suggested that $PM_{10}$ in subway trains may have sources other than those directly associated with the number of passengers.

  • The airborne concentrations of Sulfur Dioxide and Total Suspended Particulates were investigated in 4 subway lines in Seoul at early summer, 1990 and early summer, 1991. The results of the study were as follows: 1. The airborne concentrations of SO$_2$ and TSP were 0.022 ppm, 445.7 $\mu$g/m$^3$ respectively. And percents of over annual air quality standard of WHO was that SO$_2$ and TSP were 41.7%, 100% respectively. 2. Airborne SO$_2$ concentrations by subway lines were that line 1 was 0.025 ppm, line 2 was 0.023 ppm, line 3 was 0.020 ppm, and line 4 was 0.017 ppm. And TSP concentrations by subway lines were that line 2 was 533.8 $\mu$g/m$^3$, line 1 was 516.5 $\mu$g/m$^3$, line 4 was 371.6 $\mu$g/m$^3$, and line 3 was 369.3 $\mu$g/m$^3$ 3. Annual variation of concentration of TSP was not significant statistically (t=0.327), and that of SO$_2$, in 1990 was slightly higher than that in 1991 (t=1.433, p<0.1). 4. Coefficients of correlation between TSP and SO$_2$ by years were that early summer, 1990 was r=0.277 (p>0.1), and early summer, 1991 was r=0.32 (p>0.1).
