  • As a supplement to X-ray mammography, microwave imaging is a new and promising technique for breast cancer detection. Through solving the nonlinear inverse scattering problem, microwave tomography (MT) creates images from measured signals using antennas. In this paper, we describe a developed MT system and an iterative Gauss-Newton algorithm. At each iteration, this algorithm determines the updated values by solving the set of normal equations using Tikhonov regularization. Some examples of successful image reconstruction are presented.

  • Microwave imaging (MI) is one of the most promising and attractive new techniques for earlier breast cancer detection. Microwave tomography (MT) realizes configuration of a multistatic multiple-input multiple-output system and reconstructs dielectric properties of the breast by solving a nonlinear inversion scattering problem. In this paper, we describe ETRI 3D MT system with 3D MI reconstruction program and demonstrate its robustness through some examples of the image reconstruction.

  • In this letter, we propose a novel approach to detecting and tracking apartment buildings for the development of a video-based navigation system that provides augmented reality representation of guidance information on live video sequences. For this, we propose a building detector and tracker. The detector is based on the AdaBoost classifier followed by hierarchical clustering. The classifier uses modified Haar-like features as the primitives. The tracker is a motion-adjusted tracker based on pyramid implementation of the Lukas-Kanade tracker, which periodically confirms and consistently adjusts the tracking region. Experiments show that the proposed approach yields robust and reliable results and is far superior to conventional approaches.

  • Improved flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is composed of a series transformer and superconducting unit of the YBCO coated conductor. The primary and secondary coils in the transformer were wound in series each other through an iron core and the YBCO coated conductor was connected with secondary coil in parallel. In this paper, we investigated the current limiting characteristics through initial line current after fault initiation. through the analysis, it was shown that the smaller initial line current is superior to current limiting characteristics and a point of view of power burden of the YBCO coated conductor.

  • Recently, the concern for mechanical properties at early age concrete are increasing because of the importance of the thermal stress and the determination of removal time of form work and prestressing work. In this study, an estimation for the development of compressive strength and elastic modulus with age in concretes isothermally cured $(10^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C)$ and having W/C ratio of 30, 40, and $50\%$ were investigated. According to experiment results, the development of compressive strength and elastic modulus shows higher values at early ages as the W/C ratio decreases and curing temperature increases. When the maturity concept, for estimation of the strength, is adopted, a modification for W/C ratio is required at early ages.

  • Currently, in evaluating a flexural strength of a concrete member, the effect of specimen depth has not been systematically studied, even though its effect on ultimate strength of a section is very important. For all types of loading conditions, the trend is that the strength of a member tends to decrease when the member depth increases. In this study, the influence of specimen depth on flexural compressive strength of concrete member was examined experimentally. A series of C-shaped specimens subjected to axial compressive force and bending moment were tested using three geometrically similar specimens with different length-to-depth ratios(h/c=1, 2 and 4) which have compressive strength of 55MPa. The results indicate that the flexural compressive strength decreased as the specimen depth increased. A model equation was derived based on regression analyses of the experimental data. Also the results show that ultimate strain decreases as the specimen depth increases. Finally, a general model equation for the depth effect is proposed.

  • This paper investigates the phase singularity problem in microwave image reconstruction utilizing unwrapped phase data. The measured phases of the electric fields in most microwave measurement systems are wrapped. Thus, a certain phase unwrapping process is necessary for reconstruction of the image of a high contrast object. This unwrapping, however, is difficult in the presence of scattering nulls on/near the unwrapping path. At the null point, the phase value will be rendered, resulting in a poor image reconstruction. In this paper, we investigate the phase singularity arising from electromagnetic scattering nulls in microwave breast tomographic imaging. We then propose a transformation technique for the measured electric fields that avoids phase singularity.

  • Recent advances in positioning and photogrammetry technologies have made it possible to build a mobile mapping system (MMS) that can obtain 3D coordinates of geographic objects from stereo images recorded from a moving vehicle. In this paper, we present a design and detailed implementation of an MMS called a 4S-Van. Furthermore, we present four issues that have made major contributions to the performance of an MMS: 1) CCD camera calibration, 2) GPS signal condition, 3) integrating a GPS, inertial navigation system (INS), distance measurement indicator (DMI), and CCD cameras, and 4) the orientation angle of CCD cameras. In the experimental results, the performance of an MMS was analyzed for each component, giving an idea of how to effectively design and integrate each component in developing an MMS to get a maximal accuracy of 3D coordinates.
