  • A skeletal system of Coreoleuciscus splendidus from Seomjin and Mankyeong Rivers is described and figured in detail. The osteological characteristics are as follow: preorbital area elongated; eight proximal radials on the anal fin; 1st basibranchial bone with a bottle gourd shape; two types of pharynegeal teeth; intercalarium's ascending process absent and rib 4 broad greatly. Meanwhile, the number of actinost and the length of external process and internal process on the pelvic girdle are variable with individuals. These characteristics are shown in the two population. The epural on the caudal skeleton, however, has two types only in C. splendidus of Mankyeong River.

  • In order to measure in-situ suspended particle size, volume concentration of suspended particulate matter and current speed, mooring observation was performed at the Gwangyang Bay by using of an optical instrument, 'LISST-100' and an acoustic instrument, 'ADV'(St. S1). And the sediment flux was obtained based on the concentration of suspended particulate matter and current speeds measured at three lines of Gwangyang Bay during ebb and flood tide of August 2006. To investigate the spatial variation of suspended particulate matter, profiling observations were measured difference echo intensity and beam attenuation coefficient by using of ADCP and Transmissometer (Line A, B, C). The suspended sediment flux rate at the mouth of Gwangyang Bay was observed to be higher during asymmetrical than symmetrical of current speeds. The flux of suspended particulate matter concentration and current speeds were transported to southeastern direction of surface layer and northwestern direction of bottom layer at the western area at line A of Gwangyang Bay. Small suspended particles have been found to increase attenuation and transmission more efficiently than similar large particles using acoustic intensity (ADV/ADCP) or optical transmit coefficient (LISST-100/Transmissometer). The application and problems as using optical or acoustic instruments will be detected for use in time varying calibrations to account for non-negligible changes in complex environments in situ particle dynamics are poorly understood.

  • Sympatric sites of type NE and NS of Zacco korean us were found in the upper reaches of many tributaries of the Nakdong and Seomjin rivers, as well as in some streams draining into the South Sea, Korea. In streams where the two types exist together, there was a tendency for individuals of NE to densely populate the upper reaches and those of NS to populate the middle reaches. A habitat-segregation phenomenon was observed in the cohabiting sites. Fishes of NE preferred rapids, whereas fishes of NS preferred slowly flowing or lentic regions. It seemed that the number of NE was proportional to the flow velocity, but NS showed an opposite trend in the cohabiting sites. On the other hand, such tendency was not found in regions where NE and NS exist separately.

  • The concentrations of Cu, Pb and Zn in the surface waters of Kwangyang Bay were determined bimonthly at 20 stations during 1983-84. The ranges and mean concentrations were 〈0.03-2.68$\mu\textrm{g}$/l, 1.08$\mu\textrm{g}$/l for Cu, 〈0.03-7.19$\mu\textrm{g}$/l, 0.76$\mu\textrm{g}$/l for Pb and 0.3-23.1$\mu\textrm{g}$/l, 5.6$\mu\textrm{g}$/l for Zn, respectively. The slightly higher levels of heavy metals studied were shown in Sueo and Seomjin River Estuaries. Analysis of correlation coefficients showed that Cu, Pb and Zn were closely associated not only to one another nut also to SS and COD in seawater.

  • The characteristics of pollutant loads from the various sources and seawater quality in Kwangyang Bay were evaluated. Total flow rate was estimated to be $10,868,066.8 m^3/day$ with a flow rate of R2l (the Seomjin River) as the highest one. Total COD, TN and TP loads of the input rivers and the ditches were about 27,591.8, 25,029.6 and 586.4 kg/day, respectively. Wastewater discharging loads was the greatest contributors to pollutant loads in the inner part of Kwangyang Bay. COD values in the inner part of the bay was over 3.0 mg/L, which exceeded the seawater quality criteria III of Korea. The average values of DIN and DIP were 8.62 ${\mu}gN/L\;and\;1.26\;{\mu}gP/L$, respectively. The limiting factor for algal growth was DIN. In he total discharging loads of the watershed from unit loading estimations, BOD, TN and TP were 9,132.3, 2,727.2 and 304.2 kg/day, respectively. In addition, municipal sewage by the population as pollution sources and the city of Kwangyang as administrative district had the highest loads. For a appropriate water quality recovery of Kwangyang Bay, it is suggested that it is essential to estimate reduction rate of total pollutant loads by water quality modeling.

  • In order to understand the stress responses, we measured the concentration of stress hormones by using the fresh feces of wild otters in the Gwangju stream and Seomjin river during summer and winter in 2018. We compared seasonal and regional number of spraints (=otters' feces), temperature, altitude, water width, land cover, and water quality with stress hormones. The stress hormone levels were higher in summer than in winter, and significantly different to season and region. In addition, the number of feces were different according to the season and region, and showed a negative correlation with stress hormone. This study suggested assessing stress hormones as another promising method for the analysis of status of wild otters and it will contribute to establish the management and conservation policy, especially in urban area.

  • The Gwangyang Bay, southern coast of Korea, is characterized by its semi-enclosed basin morphology and mesotidal regime. The Seomjin River, in particular, has a complex delta depositional system at its mouth, which has approximately 44$\textrm{km}^2$ in the total surface area. Various sedimentary environments, such as delta, intertidal flat, subtidal zone and major tidal channels are recognized based on sediment facies and depositional regime. However, the essential intertidal flat environments are developed mainly in the western parts of the bay which is generally low in energy, i, e. tidal current and wave action.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide a method of estimating the magnitude and frequency of floods on five major streams in Korea such as the Han, the naktong, the Geum, the Seomjin and the Yeongsan. Derivation of the flood frequency formulae is based on the multiple correlation method. For each gaging station in the region, flood frequency curves are drawn by GumbelChow and Weibull plot. where 24 gaging stations are selected for this study. After the station flood-frequency cruves have been prepared, discharges are read at selected recurrence intervals. Each set of discharges is then correlated with basin parameters, using regression equation. The basin parameters that are considered include drainage area, length of main stream, shape facotr, mean basin slope and main channel slope.
