  • In this paper, we discussed the fabrication and characterization of bulk type CdZnTe detector for pocket surveymeter. The resistivity of CdZnTe single crystal grown by the High Pressure Bridgman method is in the mid of $10^9$ ohm-cm. The detector structure is Au/CdZnTe/Au and gold electrode is formed by electroless deposition method. Resolutions of 4.8keV and 2.2keV were observed at 22.2keV line of $^{109}Cd$ and 59.6keV line of $^{241}Am$ at room temperature, respectively. We also constructed the small size pocket surveymeter using home made CdZnTe detector. It shows the good linearity over a range from 1mR/hr to 10R/hr with deviation less than 5%. The sensitivity of the surveymeter developed is $2.2{\times}10^3 cps/Rad\;hr^{-1}$ for the 662keV of $^{l37}Cs\;{\gamma}-ray$.

  • In this paper, we propose a classification algorithm based on the obtained EEG(Electroencephalogram) signal for the control of 'left' and 'right' turnings of which a driving system composed of EEG sensor, Labview, DAQ, Matlab and driving robot. The proposed algorithm uses features extracted from frequency band information obtained by DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) and selects features of high discrimination by using Fisher score. We, also propose the number of feature vectors for the best classification performance by using SVM(Support Vector Machine) classifier and propose a decision pending algorithm based on MLD (Maximum Likelihood Decision) to prevent malfunction due to misclassification. The selected four feature vectors for the proposed algorithm are the mean of absolute value of voltage and the standard deviation of d5(2-4Hz) and d2(16-32Hz) frequency bands of P8 channel according to the international standard electrode placement method. By using the SVM classifier, we obtained 98.75% accuracy and 1.25% error rate. Also, when we specify error probability of 70% for decision pending, we obtained 95.63% accuracy and 0% error rate by using the proposed decision pending algorithm.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a portable and convenient closed-loop contrel type electrical stimulator for patients with foot drop. This system restores walking movement as well as prevents from atrophy or necrosis of lower limb muscles and increases blood circulation in hemiplegic patients caused by traffic accident, industrial disaster or stoke. This system detects the changes of the ankle joint angle during walking, and then controls the stimulus intensity automatically to maintain the programmed level of the ankle joint angle. Also, this automatic system controls the stimulus intensity which is affected by increased electrode impedance resulting from long time use. The system detects the joint angle by an optical sensor and includes modified PID control which adjusts the stimulus intensity if the joint angle deviates from the preset value. Stimulus parameters are 30~80 volt, 40 Hz, and 0.2 ms. The system was applied to five hemiplegic patients for 42 days. Duration of stimulation was 15 min/day for the first week and then the duration was gradually increased to 30, 60, 90 and 120 min/day. The muscle force was increased up to 29.7%, muscle fatigue was decreased compared with the level before stimulation and the pattern of locomotion was improved. These results suggest that the electrical stimulator with closed-loop control type is more convenient and effective in restoration of locomotion of patients with foot drop than open-loop system.

  • The primary goal of this research was to develop an optimized analytical procedure for soil analysis based on ion-selective microelectrodes for agricultural purposes, which can perform on-site measurement of various ions in soil easily and rapidly. For the simple and rapid on-site diagnosis, an analysis of soil chemicals was performed employing a multicomponent-in-situ-extractant and an evaluation of ionselective microelectrodes were conducted through the regressive correlation method with a standard analytical approach widely employed in this area. Examination of sensor responses between various soil nutrient extractants revealed that 0.01M HCl and 1M LiCl provided the most ideal Nernstian response. However, 1M LiCl deteriorated the selective response for analytes due to high concentration (1M) of lithium cation. Thus, employing either 0.1M HCl as an extractant followed by 10 times dilution, or 0.01M HCl as an extractant without further dilution was chosen as the optimal extractant composition. A study of regressive correlation between results from ion-selective microelectrodes and those from the standard analytical procedure showed that analyses of $K^+$, $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $NO_3{^-}$ showed the excellent consistency between two methods. However, the response for $NH_4{^+}$ suffered the severe interference from $K^+$. In addition, the selectivity for $Mg^{2+}$ over $Ca^{2+}$ was not sufficient enough since available ionophores developed so far do not provide such a high selectivity for $Mg^{2+}$. Therefore, as an agricultural on-site diagnostic instrument, the device in development requires further research on $NH_4{^+}$ analysis in the soil sample, development of $Mg^{2+}$-selective ionophore, and more detailed study focused on potassium, one of the most important plant nutrients.
