Inaccurate localization exposes a robot to many dangerous conditions. It could make a robot be moved to wrong direction or damaged by collision with surrounding obstacles. There are numerous approaches to self-localization, and there are different modalities as well (vision, laser range finders, ultrasonic sonars). Since sensor information is generally uncertain and contains noise, there are many researches to reduce the noise. But, the correctness is limited because most researches are based on statistical approach. The goal of our research is to measure more exact robot location by matching between built VRML 3D model and real vision image. To determine the position of mobile robot, landmark-localization technique has been applied. Landmarks are any detectable structure in the physical environment. Some use vertical lines, others use specially designed markers, In this paper, specially designed markers are used as landmarks. Given known focal length and a single image of three landmarks it is possible to compute the angular separation between the lines of sight of the landmarks. The image-processing and neural network pattern matching techniques are employed to recognize landmarks placed in a robot working environment. After self-localization, the 2D scene of the vision is overlaid with the VRML scene.
In this paper, ultrasonic range system which detects parking lot in parking area is studied. The important part for detecting parking lot accurately is to detect the first and second corners of possible parking lot, and for that, new method using multiple echo function is introduced in this paper. Many probabilistic methods have been used to reduce uncertainties of ultrasonic sensor for distance and location of objects. Method using multiple echo, however, gives accurates results as well as simple algorithm. For experiments in parking space, ultrasonic range system was attached to a Pioneer AT-2 and final parking space map was created in a fusion with position information from wheels of a Pioneer AT-2. We will show the results are compared with error of another methods.
We introduce a MEMS-based pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) system. A walking navigation algorithm for pedestrians is presented and map-matching algorithm for the navigation system based on dead reckoning (DR) is proposed. The PDR is equipped on the human body and provides the position information of pedestrians. And this is able to be used in ubiquitous sensor network (USN), U-hearth monitoring system, virtual reality (VR) and etc. The PDR detects a step using a novel technique and simultaneously estimates step length. Also an azimuth of the pedestrian is calculated using a fluxgate which is the one of magnetometers. Map-matching algorithm can be formulated to integrate the positioning data with the digital road network data. Map-matching algorithm not only enables the physical location to be identified from navigation system but also improves the positioning accuracy. However most of map-matching algorithms which are developed previously are for the car navigation system (CNS). Therefore they are not appropriate to implement to pedestrian navigation system based on DR system. In this paper, we propose walking navigation system and map-matching algorithm for PDR.
The spectral radiance received by a remote sensor at a given temperature and wavelength region is consisted of the self-emitted component directly from the object surface, the reflected component of the solar irradiation at the object surface, and the scattered component by the atmosphere without ever reaching the object surface. The IR image of a ship is mainly affected by location, meteorological condition(atmosphere temperature, wind direction and velocity, humidity etc.), atmospheric transmittance, solar position and ship surface temperature etc. Computer simulations for prediction of the IR signatures of ships are very useful to examine the effects of various meteorological conditions. In this paper, we have acquired the IR signature for different meteorological conditions by using two different computer programs. The numerical results show that the IR image contrast as compared to the background sea considering the atmosphere temperature and wind velocity.
In this paper, we present visual sensing techniques that can be used to teach a robot using a laser pointer. The light spot of an off-the-shelf laser pointer is detected and its movement is tracked on consecutive images of a camera. The three-dimensional position of the spot is calculated using stereo cameras. The light spot on the image is detected based on its color, brightness, and shape. The detection results in a binary image, and morphological processing steps are performed on the image to refine the detection. The movement of the laser spot is measured using two methods. The first is a simple method of specifying the region of interest (ROI) centered at the current location of the light spot and finding the spot within the ROI on the next image. It is assumed that the movement of the spot is not large on two consecutive images. The second method is using a Kalman filter, which has been widely employed in trajectory estimation problems. In our simulation study of various cases, Kalman filtering shows better results mostly. However, there is a problem of fitting the system model of the filter to the pattern of the spot movement.

In this paper, a new detection algorithm was proposed for finding the position of lenslet array spot pattern used to acquire laser wavefront. Based on the analysis of the required signal processing characteristics, we categorized into and designed four main signal processing functions. The proposed was designed in order to have robust feature against a variation of geometrical form of the spot and also implemented to have semi-automatic thresholding capability based on CCD noise analysis. For performance evaluation, we made qualitative and quantitative comparisons with Carvalho's algorithm which has been published in recent. In the given experimental spot images, the proposed could detect the spots which has 1/3 times lower than the least S/N of which Carvalho's can detect and could reach to a detection precision of 0.1 pixel at the S/N. In functional aspect, the proposed could separate all valid spots locally. From these results, the proposed could have a superior precision of location detection of spot pattern in wider S/N range.
