  • In this paper, a method and system to compensate vertical component of 3-dimensional magnetic field sensor using the earth's field was described. Output of magnetic field sensor have a output offset that is generated setting angle error of magnetic sensor and gain error. Thus, to using the magnetic field sensor, it must be compensated. The compensation of magnetic field sensor is required at shield space. However, using the earth's field, output offset of the sensor can be simply compensated. And, we designed system for compensation of the sensor. The proposed method and system are verified usefulness through experimental.

  • Geomagnetic is refracted by building's wall and pillar. Therefore refracted geomagnetic is able to be used as feature point. In a specific space, a mobile device that is equipped with magnetic sensor array measures 3-axis magnetic field for each point. Magnetic field map is acquired by collecting the every sample point in the magnetic field. The measured magnetic field must be calibrated, because each magnetic sensor has a distortion. For this reason, sensor distortion model and sensor calibration method are proposed in this paper. Magnetic field that is measured by mobile device matches magnetic field map. Result of the matching is used for position estimation. This paper implements hardware system for position estimation method using magnetic field map.

  • The magnetic field sensor was fabricated with superconducting ceramics of BiPbSrCaCuO system. The sensor at liquid nitrogen temperature showed the increase of electrical resistance by applying magnetic field. Actually, the voltage drop across the sensor was changed from zero to a value more than 100 $\mu\textrm{V}$ by the applied magnetic field. The change of electrical resistance depended on magnetic field. The sensitivity of this sensor was 2.9 $\Omega$/T. The sensing limit was about 1.5${\times}$10$\^$-5/ T. The increase of electrical resistance by the magnetic field was ascribed to a modification of the Josephson junctions due to the penetrating magnetic flux into the superconducting material. Considering the observed properties of the superconductor with trapped magnetic flux, a magnetic sensor was fabricated to detect simultaneously both the intensity and the direction of the magnetic field.

  • This paper is focused on the measurement and analysis of an atmospheric electric field which is caused by thunderclouds. The electric field due to thunderclouds changes very slowly. For this reason, the extremely low frequency E-field sensor needs to be used for measuring the atmospheric electric field strength. The balloon-carried E-field sensor system with the time constant of 1sec was designed and fabricated. The electric field sensor consists of $100mm{\times}100mm$ copper plate, active integrator, high pass and low pass filters and batteries. The measurements of atmospheric electric fields were made by the balloon-carried E-field sensor and radiosonde, which sends the data back to ground in real time. From the calibration experiments, the response sensitivity of the E-field sensor was 0.154mV/kV/m in the frequency range of less than 1kHz. As a result from the actual experiment of the atmospheric electric field, the electric field signals were observed from the altitude of about 2.5km. Also, as the altitude was increased, the detected electric field wave oscillated with the fluctuation of sensing plate. The proposed method seems suitable for measurements of atmospheric electric fields, because it is inexpensive, simple to use and launch.

  • We proposed an optical modulator of reflective type to compose the electric field sensor, and theoretically analyzed the performance and characteristics. For the high sensitivity of the sensor, a method to improve the modulation index of the modulator was presented. The electric field sensor using Ti:LiNbO$_{3}$ waveguide was fabricated and qualitatively investigated the characteristics by measuring the low frequency electric field. Even though the sensor showed relatively low modulation index, the electric filed strength of 10$^{-2}$V/m was measured. The experimental results revealed the utilities of this type electric field sensor.

  • A laboratory sensor model was designed, constructed, and tested based on a newly proposed working principle of magnetic field detection. The principle of sensing employed a time-coded method in correlation with exploiting the advantageous features of the GMI effect. The sensor demonstrated a sensitivity of $10\;{\mu}s/{\mu}T$ in the field range of ${\pm}100\;{\mu}T$. The sensing element in the form of an amorphous thin wire, $100\;{\mu}m$ in diameter ${\times}50\;mm$ long, was fit into a small field modulation coil of 60 mm length. At a magnetic field modulation in the range of hundreds of Hz, the change in time interval of two adjacent GMI voltage peaks was linearly related to the external magnetic field to be measured. This mechanism improved the sensor linearity of the GMI sensor to better than 0.2% in the measuring range of ${\pm}100\;{\mu}T$.

  • A GMI magnetic field sensor working based on time-coded principle has been investigated and designed. The laboratory model has been constructed and tested carefully, demonstrating the sensitivity of $3\;{\mu}s/{\mu}T$ in the field range of ${\pm}100\;{\mu}T$. An amorphous thin wire, $100\;{\mu}m$ in diameter ${\times}50\;mm$ in length, was chosen to be sensing element which was fit into a small field modulation coil of 60 mm in length. The sensor is working based on a time-coded principle that, with the magnetic field modulation was chosen in range of hundreds of Hz, the change in time interval of two adjacent GMI peaks relating to external DC magnetic field is proportional to the intensity of the external field to be measured. This mechanism has made a great improvement to the linearity of the sensor.

  • Most sensor array signal processing methods for multiple source localization require knowledge of the correct shape of array(the correct positions of sensors that consist array), because sensor position uncertainty can severely degrade the performance of array signal processing. In particular, it is assumed that the correct positions of the sensors are known, but the known positions may not represent the true sensor positions. Various algorithms have been proposed for 2-D sensor array shape calibration in far field environment. However, they are not available in near field. In this paper, 3-D sensor array shape calibration algorithm is proposed, which is available in near field.
