  • This paper presents a method to compensate the drift of solid-state inertial sensors for control applications. A solid-state gyroscope is evaluated via both theoretical and experimental analyses. From the analytical results, a heuristic compensation method for the drift of the gyroscope is proposed. Experimental results on inverted pendulum control show that the proposed method is feasible since compensated signals from the gyroscope are successfully used in the feedback loop to control the inverted pendulum system.

  • An improved multi-channel Impedance Void Meter (IVM) is developed to measure an area-averaged void fraction. It consists of a main sensor, a reference sensor and a signal processor. The sensor was designed to be flush-mounted to the inner wall of the test section to avoid the flow disturbances. Guard electrodes are used to obtain evenly distributed electrical field in a measuring volume. A reference sensor is also installed to eliminate the drift in void signal caused by the changes in electrical properties of working fluid. The signal processor with three channels is specially designed so as to minimize the inherent error due to the phase difference between channels. As an example of applications, the mean and fluctuating components of void fraction are measured for bubbly and slug flow regime, and it is shown that IVM has good dynamic resolution which is required to investigate the structural developments of bubbly flow and the propagation of void waves in a flow channel.

  • In this paper, integrated pressure sensor with calibration of offset voltage and full scale output and temperature compensation of offset voltage and full scale output were designed. The signal conditioning circuitry are designed that calibrate the offset voltage and full scale output to desired values and minimize the temperature drift of offset voltage and full scale output. Designed circuits are simulated using SPICE in a bipolar technology. The ion implanted resistor of different temperature coefficient were used to trimming the desired values. As a results, offset voltage was calibrated to 0.133V and the temperature drift of offset voltage was reduced to $42\;ppm/^{\circ}C$. Also, the full scale output was calibrated to 4.65V and the temperature coefficient of full scale output was reduced to $40ppm/^{\circ}C$ after temperature compensation.

  • The Pd/Pt gate MISFET type hydrogen sensors, for detecting dissolved hydrogen gas in the transformer oil, were fabricated and their characteristics were investigated. These sensors including diffused resister heater and temperature monitoring diode were fabricated on the same chip by a conventional silicon process technique. The differential pair plays a role in minimizing the intrinsic voltage drift of the MISFET. To avoid the drift of the sensors induced by the hydrogen, the gate insulators of both FETs were constructed with double layers of silicon dioxide and silicon nitride. In order to eliminate the blister formation on the surface of the hydrogen sensing gate metal, Pt and Pd double metal layers were deposited on the gate insulator. The hydrogen response of the Pd/Pt gate MISFET suggests that the proposed sensor can detect the dissolved hydrogen in transformer oil with 40mV/10ppm of sensitivity and 0.14mV/day of stability.

  • In this study, we fabricated the semiconductor laser for optical sensor with 1.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$wavelength region. In order to suppress lasing oscillation and to reduce the reflectivity, the devices of bending type were designed and fabricated. Their output power were 1.6㎽ at a pulse drive current of 100㎃. When the fabricated device was applied to optical fiber gyroscope, the output power of optical fiber was 540㎻ at a CW drive current of 100㎃, the full width at half maximum spectral width was 53nm. And the random-walk coefficient was measured to be 2.5$\times$10$^3$deg/√hr, the gyro output drift was also found to be 0.3 deg/hr. So we confirmed the possibility of application to use for light source of optical fiber gyroscope.

  • This paper presents a Ka-band FMCW sensor that has high linearity by improving a nonlinear behavior of the voltage controlled oscillator. Due to the nonlinear characteristics of the voltage controlled oscillator for the conventional method, the drift of beat frequency can cause inaccuracy and errors to the extracted results. A Ka-band FMCW signal with fast transition time could be generated by using both direct digital synthesizer and phase locked loop in this research. The implemented FMCW sensor showed very high accuracy in beat frequency through the test.

  • Under the influence of atmospheric turbulence, a star's point image will shake back and forth erratically, and after exposure the originally small star point will spread into a huge spot, which will affect the ground calibration of the star sensor. To analyze the impact of atmospheric turbulence on the positioning accuracy of the star's center of mass, this paper simulates the atmospheric turbulence phase screen using a method based on a sparse spectrum. It is added to the static-star-simulation device to study the transmission characteristics of atmospheric turbulence in star-point simulation, and to analyze the changes in star points under different atmospheric refractive-index structural constants. The simulation results show that the structure function of the atmospheric turbulence phase screen simulated by the sparse spectral method has an average error of 6.8% compared to the theoretical value, while the classical Fourier-transform method can have an error of up to 23% at low frequencies. By including a simulation in which the phase screen would cause errors in the center-of-mass position of the star point, 100 consecutive images are selected and the average drift variance is obtained for each turbulence scenario; The stronger the turbulence, the larger the drift variance. This study can provide a basis for subsequent improvement of the ground-calibration accuracy of a star sensitizer, and for analyzing and evaluating the effect of atmospheric turbulence on the beam.

  • Since inertial sensor errors which increase with time are caused by initial orientation error and sensor errors (accelerometer bias and gyro drift bias), the accuracy of these devices, while still improving, is not adequate for many of today's high-precision, long-duration sea, aircraft, and long-range missile missions. This paper presents a navigation error compensation scheme for Strap-Down Inertial Navigation System (SDINS) using Line-Of-Sight(LOS) vector from star sensor. To be specific, SDINS error model and measurement equation are derived, and Kalman filter is implemented. Simulation results show the bounded-ness of position and attitude errors.

  • This paper presents the development and control of a two wheeled car-like mobile robot using balancing mechanism whose heading control is done by turning the handle. The mobile inverted pendulum is a combined system of a mobile robot and an inverted pendulum system. A sensor fusion technique of low cost sensors such as a gyro sensor and a tilt sensor to measure the balancing angle of the inverted pendulum robot system accurately is implemented. Experimental studies of the trajectory following control task has been conducted by command of steering wheel while balancing.
