  • ZnO nanotubes were synthesized to investigate the effect of wall thickness on the ethanol gas sensing performance. The wall thickness of the nanotubes was varied from approximately 20 to 60 nm. Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and SAED (Selected Area Electron Beam Diffraction) analyses showed that the synthesized nanotubes were polycrystalline structured ZnO with the diameter of approximately 200-300nm. The ZnO nanotubes sensor with an optimum wall thickness of 51.8nm showed approximately 8 times higher response, compared to that with 21.14nm wall thick nanotubes, to the ethanol concentration of 500 ppm at the temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. The wall thickness of 51.8nm was found to be a little larger than 46nm, which was theoretically derived Debye length. Along with the study of the wall thickness effect on the performance of the sensors, the mechanisms of gas sensing of the polycrystalline ZnO nanotubes are also discussed.

  • Since 1998 for protection of marine pollution, all ships must have oil filtering equipment and 15ppm bilge alarms which satisfy Requirements of MARPOL 73/78. Oily-water separator used in machinery area of ships usually consists of two parts; one is filtering equipment and the other is oil content meter(OCM). This study presents optical characteristics of bilge were acquired form oil content sensing module. The oil content sensing module consists of IR-LED light source, photo-diode light receivers, and a glass tube for bilge water sample. The experiment with the bilge water demonstrates various valuable optical properties. These optical properties suggest notes and guides to make the low-cost, easy operation and good performance commercial type OCM that satisfy the requirements of MARPOL 73/78.

  • The drying up of seepage in Kumagaya City was caused by the increase of impermeable area with urbanization. The project of rain fall infiltration facilities has been planned for improvement of a hydrological cycle in Kumagaya City. With GIS and remote sensing, the most suitable arrangement for the rainfall infiltration inlets was examined. Distribution maps for infiltration, evapotranspiration and groundwater recharge at each town in Kumagaya City was designed from the land cover classification map with hydrological analysis. In these distribution maps, influence of the leak from drinking water and sewage networks was counted to the hydrological cycle.

  • The absolute area of wetland accounts for 0.3% of the whole Beijing. We have studied the current environmental situations of Beijing's wetland and the changes in the key wetland supported by Remote Sensing(RS) technology. The result shows that the areas of wetland are reducing year by year and the quality of ecological environment is dropping year by year. At last, we analyze the factors that influence the change of wetland and propose some constructive suggestions according to current problems existing in Beijing's wetland.

  • This paper presents an unsupervised change detection methodology designed for the detection of landslide areas. The proposed methodology consists of two analytical steps: one for multi-temporal segmentation and the other for automatic selection of thresholding values. By considering the conditions of landslide occurrences and the spectral behavior of multi-temporal remote sensing images, some specific procedures are included in the analytical steps mentioned above. The effectiveness and applicability of the methodology proposed here were illustrated by a case study of the Gangneung area, Korea. The case study demonstrated that the proposed methodology could detect about $83\%$ of landslide occurrences.

  • The present study was aimed to estimate the urban sprawl in a historical city of India using series of satellite data between 1968 and 2005(37 years) and GIS. The total area of the Tiruchirappalli city was 1991.96 ha during 1968 and it was expanded into 4335.98 ha(117.67%) during 2005. The average growth rate per year was 63.35 ha. This 117.67% growth was at the cost of agriculture land(97.81%) and water body(2.19%). The satellite data used in this study were found to be good source of information for this kind of analysis and further studies are need to estimate the impact of this city expansion on agriculture yield and ground water.

  • Several falling-sensing terminals have been developed which are able to detect the fall/upset accident of the elderly and transmit the collapsing signals to the administrative server via RF communication using 400MHz bandwidth. Supposing there might be no communication problem within a sanatorium, just single terminal without relay function had been made as a prototype in the first stage of development. However some communication problems have discovered at the coner of the floor apart from the other floor diagonally in the same building. Same kind of problems have been happened in the area behind a steel fence or a car. To solve these kinds of communication problems, we have developed several terminals and added up relay function to them. In this paper we represented that the success ratio of the communication has been improved by using relay function among several terminals.

  • Semiconductor gas sensors based on metal oxide are widely used in a number of applications, from health and safety to energy efficiency and emission control. Nanomaterials including nanowires, nanorods, and nanoparticles have dominated the research focus in this field owing to their large number of surface sites that facilitate surface reactions. Recently, metal oxide hollow structures using soft templates have been developed owing to their high sensing properties with large-area uniformity. Here, we provide a brief overview of metal oxide hollow structures and their gas-sensing properties from the aspects of template size, morphology, and additives. In addition, a gas-sensing mechanism and perspectives are presented.

  • We propose a novel micro surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor system based on polymer materials. The proposed SPR system consists of the incident medium with polymer waveguide and the gold thin film for sensing area. Using a polymer optical waveguide instead of a prism in SPR sensing system offers miniaturization, low cost, and potable sensing capability. The whole device performance was analyzed using the finite-difference time domain method. The optimum gold thickness in the attenuated total reflection mirror of polymer waveguide is around 50 nm and the resonance angle to generate surface plasmon wave is 68 degrees.
