Joint Forest Management(JFM) is a concept of developing partnerships between fringe forest user groups and the Forest Department(FD) on the basis of mutual trust and jointly defined roles and responsibilities with regard to forest protection and development. In India, JFM was started during 1992 and it was implemented in many states. However success rate of JFM activity was not promising. Though there are many factors attributed to the failures, one of the main factors is the JFM site. This paper deals with the significant ground works to be done before planning for JFM using recent technologies such as remote sensing(RS) and Geographic Information System(GIS). Also it deals with the advantages of weighted overlay analysis in selecting suitable sites for JFM taking into consideration the various criteria. As a result of weighted overlay analysis, there were four types of suitability classes viz., less, moderate, highly and un-suitable. The moderately suitable class occupied maximum area(13209.64 ha) than less and highly suitable classes. If JFM is implemented on the suitability area, then the failure could be avoided in the future.
The Barind tract is threatened by desertification and undergoing rapid change. In view of this fact it is very much essential to manage this barind tract under proper land-use plan. The present study evaluates the effectiveness of high-resolution satellite data and computer aided GIS techniques in assessing land-use change detection for the period 1990 to 2007 within the study area, which is very much essential to manage this barind tract under proper land-use plan, and for proper land-use plan it is necessary to get reliable information. The present study found five major land-use such as current fallow, current agriculture, settlement, irrigation water and water bodies. From the result, it is found that current fallow and water bodies decrease while settlement and current agriculture increase. Study concludes that as Barind tract is threatened by desertification, decrease of water bodies is not a good sign for the study area.
This study focused on the a 20-year evaluation of the dynamism of critical thermal anomalies in Busan metropolitan area prompted by unusual infrastructural development and demographic growth rate. Archived Landsat thermal data derived-LST was the major input for UTFVI and hot spot analysis (Getis-Ord Gi*). Results revealed that the surface urban heat island-affected area has gradually expanded overtime from 23.32% to 32.36%; while the critical positive thermal anomalies (level-3 hotspots) have also spatially increased from 19.88% in 2000 to 23.56% in 2020, recording a net LST difference of > 5℃ between the maximum level-3 hotspot and minimum level-3 coldspot each year. It is been observed that thermal conditions of Busan have gradually deteriorated with time, which is potentially inherent in the rate of urban expansion. Thus, this work serves as an eye-opener to powers that be, to think and act constructively towards a sustainable thermal conform for city dwellers.
Agricultural land use generally shows specific temporal characteristics of NDVI obtained from satellite data. In terms of winter wheat, a higher value compared with other land use types in May and a considerably low value in June could be discriminative features of temporal change of NDVI. In this study, the author examined methods for estimating winter wheat sown area in sub-pixel level of coarse resolution satellite data using temporal characteristics of NDVI. Application of the methods to the major grain production area in China exhibited properly a spatial distribution pattern of winter wheat sown area.
Analysis of high-resolution satellite image becomes important for cartography, surveillance, and remote sensing. However, there are lots of problems to be solved for automatic analysis of high-resolution satellite image especially in urban area. The problems are originated from the increased complexity due to the unnecessary details and shadows, and time-varying illuminations. Because of such obstacles, it seems impossible to make automatic analysis. This paper proposes a way of change detection of buildings in urban area by using digital vector map. The proposed way makes the buildings on the vector map parameterized, and searches them in the preprocessed high-resolution image by using generalized Hough transform. The searched building objects are overlaid on the satellite image. The overlaid image can help to detect the change of building rapidly.

This study was aimed to detect area of Submaine Groundwater Discharged(: SGD) around Jeju island using by remote sensing. Sea Surface Temperature(SST) was identified using IR camera on Unmaned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) at Gimnyeong port in study area. Then SGD location was detected by comparing range of SGD temperature. Generally, range of SGD temperature is distributed 15 to 17 like underground water. The result, SGD location was detected by SST distribution of Gimnyeong port recorded by IR camera in the southwest of study area.
In this paper, forestry area change effect on the soil erosion in Asan lake watershed was estimated. Temporal variations of land use in the study watershed were analyzed from Landsat-5 TM remote sensing images. Geographic Information System (GIS) combined with Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was used to estimate the soil erosion of Asan lake watershed. Spatial data for each USLE factors was obtained from the Landsat-5 TM remote sensing images and 1/25,000 scale digital contour maps. Sediment yield to Asan lake was estimated by sediment delivery ratio and sediment accumulation in lake was estimated by trap efficiency. The estimation methods were validated for sediment accumulation in Asan lake. From the hydrographic survey from 1974 to 2003 for Asan lake, sediment accumulation was measured. The estimated accumulation sediment of 303,569ton/yr showed similar value with observed of 295,888ton/yr. From the validated estimation methods, the increasing amount of soil erosion when 1% of forest area in Asan lake watershed decreases was calculated from 12.91 to 1482.05ton/yr.
Compared to the imagery produced by traditional satellites, PlanetScope satellite imagery has made it possible to easily capture remotely-sensed imagery every day through dozens or even hundreds of satellites on a relatively small budget. This study aimed to detect changed areas and update a land cover map using a PlanetScope image. To generate a classification map, pixel-based Random Forest (RF) classification was performed by using additional features, such as the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The classification result was converted to vector data and compared with the existing land cover map to estimate the changed area. To estimate the accuracy and trends of the changed area, the quantitative quality of the supervised classification result using the PlanetScope image was evaluated first. In addition, the patterns of the changed area that corresponded to the classification result were analyzed using the PlanetScope satellite image. Experimental results found that the PlanetScope image can be used to effectively to detect changed areas on large-scale land cover maps, and supervised classification results can update the changed areas.
Many hospitals have been considering new technology such as wireless sensor network(WSN). The technology can be used to track the location of medical devices needed for inspections or repairs, and it can also be used to detect of a theft of an asset. In an asset-tracking system using WSN, acquiring the location of moving sensor nodes inherently introduces uncertainty in location determination. In fact, the sensor nodes attached to an asset are prone to failure from lack of energy or from physical destruction. Therefore, even if the asset is located within the predetermined area, the asset-tracking application could "misunderstand" that an asset has escaped from the area. This paper classifies the causes of such unexpected situations into the following five cases: 1) an asset has actually escaped from a predetermined area; 2) a sensor node was broken; 3) the battery for the sensor node was totally discharged; 4) an asset went into a shadow area; 5) a sensor node was stolen. We implemented and installed our asset-tracking system in a hospital and continuously monitored the status of assets such as ventilators, syringe pumps, wheel chairs and IV poles. Based on this real experience, we suggest how to differentiate each case of location uncertainty and propose possible solutions to prevent them.

Spectrum sensing, as a fundamental functionality of Cognitive Radio (CR), enables Secondary Users (SUs) to monitor the spectrum and detect spectrum holes that could be used. Recently, the security issues of Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) have attracted increasing research attention. As one of the attacks against CRNs, a Primary User Emulation (PUE) attack compromises the spectrum sensing of CR, where an attacker monopolizes the spectrum holes by impersonating the Primary User (PU) to prevent SUs from accessing the idle frequency bands. Energy detection is often used to sense the spectrum in CRNs, but the presence of PUE attack has not been considered. This study examined the effect of PUE attack on the performance of energy detection-based spectrum sensing technique. In the proposed protocol, the stationary helper nodes (HNs) are deployed in multiple stages and distributed over the coverage area of the PUs to deliver spectrum status information to the next stage of HNs and to SUs. On the other hand, the first stage of HNs is also responsible for inferring the existence of the PU based on the energy detection technique. In addition, this system provides the detection threshold under the constraints imposed on the probabilities of a miss detection and false alarm.
