Inductive sensors are versatile and economical devices that are widely used to measure a wide variety of physical variables, such as displacement, force, and pressure. In this paper, we propose a simple inductive sensor consisting of a thin partial ring and a coil set. The self-inductance of the sensor was estimated using magnetic circuit analysis and validated through finite element analysis (FEA). The natural frequency of the ring was estimated using Castigliano's theorem and the method of equivalent mass. The estimation was validated through experiments and FEA. A prototype sensor with a signal processing circuit is built and applied to noninvasively sense the pressure inside a flexible tube. The obtained sensor outputs show quadratic behavior with respect to the pressure. When fitted to a quadratic equation, the least-square measurement error was less than 2%. The results confirm the feasibility of pressure sensing using the proposed inductive sensor.

Data provider and data user are linked together by suitable data. This implies that for a successful relationship the provider knows what kind of data, whether original or processed, is needed by the user and that the user articulates his needs to the provider. The co-operation between Korea and Austria aims at identifying these needs and to provide suitable routines for the processing of satellite data. Partners of this co-operation are the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, ARC Seibersdorf research and GeoVille. While the focus of the former lies in the development and running of satellite systems, the latter two have experience in the development and set up of applications in the field of remote sensing. Based on the complementary know-how by the institutions involved, projects were set up in Korea and Austria to fulfill this need and establish a pilot data feed for governmental applications.

Bismuth (Bi) has been an attractive materials for studying spin dependent transport properties because it shows very large magnetoresistance (MR) resulting from its highly anisotropic Fermi surface, low carrier concentrations, long carrier mean free path 1 and small effective carrier mass m*[1-3]. With all the intriguing properties, difficulty in fabrication of high quality Bi thin films may have prevented extensive application of Bi in magnetic field sensing and spin-injection devices. Previous works found that the surface roughness and small grain size in 100-200 nm of Bi thin film made by evaporation and sputtering are major causes of low MR. Although relatively higher MR in electrodeposited Bi followed by annealing was reported, it still suffers from rough sulfate roughness which is so severs that it is hardly able to make a field sensing and spin-injection device using conventional photolithography process.
The needs for digital models of real environment such as 3D terrain or cyber city model are increasing. Most of applications related with modeling and simulation require virtual environment constructed from geospatial information of real world in order to guarantee reliability and accuracy of the simulation. The most fundamental data for building virtual environment, terrain elevation and orthogonal imagery is acquired from optical sensor of satellite or airplane. Providing interoperable and reusable digital model is important to promote practical application of high-resolution satellite imagery. This paper presents the new research regarding representation of geospatial information, especially for 3D shape and appearance of virtual terrain. and describe framework for constructing real-time 3D model of large terrain based on high-resolution satellite imagery. It provides infrastructure of 3D simulation with geographical context. Web architecture, XML language and open protocols to build a standard based 3D terrain are presented. Details of standard-based approach for providing infrastructure of real-time 3D simulation using high-resolution satellite imagery are also presented. This work would facilitate interchange and interoperability across diverse systems and be usable by governments, industry scientists and general public.

In this paper, we propose a QAPM(Quadrature Amplitude Position Modulation) modulation using compressive sensing for the purpose of power efficiency improvement. QAPM modulation is a combination technique of QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) and PPM(Pulse Position Modulation). Therefore it can decrease the transmission power and improve BER performance. Moreover, even if the band width is widened when the number of positions is increased, high sparsity characteristic caused by position number can be applied to compressive sensing technique. Compressive sensing has recently studied as a method that can be successfully reconstructed from the small number of measurements for sparse signal. Therefore, the proposed system can lower price of receiver by reducing sampling rate and has performance improved by using QAPM modulation. And the results are confirmed through simulations.
The application of spatial statistics to obtain the spatial uncertainty distributions in classification of remote sensing images is investigated in this paper. Two quantitative methods are presented for describing two kinds of uncertainty; one related to class assignment and the other related to the connection of reference samples. Three quantitative indices are addressed for the first category of uncertainty. Geostatistical simulation is applied both to integrate the exhaustive classification results with the sparse reference samples and to obtain the spatial uncertainty or accuracy distributions connected to those reference samples. To illustrate the proposed methods and to discuss the operational issues, the experiment was done on a multi-sensor remote sensing data set for supervised land-cover classification. As an experimental result, the two quantitative methods presented in this paper could provide additional information for interpreting and evaluating the classification results and more experiments should be carried out for verifying the presented methods.

Laminate Design of a composite tube for a space telescope(Fig. 1) under hygrothermal load is studied. Carpet plots for laminate effective engineering constants are generated and used for selecting the best tube lay-ups satisfying the optomechanical requirements for a space telescope being dimensional1y stable under orbital thermal loading. Despace of the tubes constructed with the selected lay-ups are calculated with a Zig-Zag Triangular Element which accurately represents through thickness stress variations for laminated structures. The effects of moisture absorption when exposed to humidity environment and moisture desorption through outgassing on the dimensional stability are also investigated.

Nanofibers, one of various one-dimensional nanomaterials such as nanorods, nanowires and nanotubes have been successfully synthesized by many groups in recent years and their applications to chemical sensors, catalytic filters and biomedicine, etc. are extensively tested. In particular, there is a possibility that chemical sensors based on oxide nanofibers can overcome the shortcomings of chemical sensors based on single nanowires. In order to prepare oxide nanofibers, the electrospinning method is most widely used. In this work, we synthesized various oxide nanofibers including ZnO, SnO2 and CuO by employing an electrospinning method and various shapes of nanofibers including core-shell nanofibers and hollow nanofibers as well. The response properties of the various nanofibers to oxidizing and reducing gaseous species have been investigated systematically. The normal oxide nanofibers showed high sensitivity and quite fast response time to many gaseous species. Furthermore, derivatives of normal nanofibers including hollow nanofibers, core-shell nanofibers and heterostructured nanofibers display much superior sensing properties. These results hold promise for the practical application of oxide nanofibers to chemical sensors. In addition, the sensing mechanisms operated in the nanofibers will be discussed in detail.
In the satellite remote sensing, the operational environment of the satellite sensor causes image degradation during the image acquisition. The degradation results in noise and blurring which badly affect identification and extraction of useful information in image data. This study proposes a maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation using Point-Jacobian iteration to restore a degraded image. The proposed method assumes a Gaussian additive noise and Markov random field of spatial continuity. The proposed method employs a neighbor window of spoke type which is composed of 8 line windows at the 8 directions, and a boundary adjacency measure of Mahalanobis square distance between center and neighbor pixels. For the evaluation of the proposed method, a pixel-wise classification was used for simulation data using various patterns similar to the structure exhibited in high resolution imagery and an unsupervised segmentation for the remotely-sensed image data of 1 mspatial resolution observed over the north area of Anyang in Korean peninsula. The experimental results imply that it can improve analytical accuracy in the application of remote sensing high resolution imagery.

Recently, graphene based solution-gated field-effect transistors (SGFETs) have been received a great attention in biochemical sensing applications. Graphene and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) possess various advantages such as high sensitivity, low detection limit, label-free electrical detection, and ease of fabrication due to their 2D nature and large sensing area compared to 1D nanomaterials- based nanobiosensors. Therefore, graphene or RGO -based SGFET is a good potential candidate for sensitive detection of protons (H+ ions) which can be applied as the transducer in various enzymatic or cell-based biosensing applications. However, reports on detection of H+ ions using graphene or RGO based SGFETs have been still limited. According to recent reports, clean graphene grown by CVD or exfoliation is electrochemically insensitive to changes of H+ concentration in solution because its surface does not have terminal functional groups that can sense the chemical potential change induced by varying surface charges of H+ on CVD graphene surface. In this work, we used RGO -SGFETs having oxygen-containing functional groups such as hydroxyl (OH) groups that effectively interact with H+ ions for expectation of increasing pH sensitivity. Additionally, we also investigate RGO based SGFETs for bio-sensing applications. Hydroloytic enzymes were introduced for sensing of biomolecular interaction on the surface of RGO -SGFET in which enzyme and substrate are acetylcholinesterase (AchE) and acetylcholine (Ach), respectively. The increase in H+ generated through enzymatic reaction of hydrolysis of Ach by AchE immobilized on RGO channel in SGFET could be monitored by the change in the drain-source current (Ids).
