Sensing characteristics for porous smart particle based on DBR smart particles were reported. Optically encoded porous silicon smart particles were successfully fabricated from the free-standing porous silicon thin films using ultrasono-method. DBR PSi was prepared by an electrochemical etch of heavily doped $p^{++}$-type silicon wafer. DBR PSi was prepared by using a periodic pseudo-square wave current. The surface-modified DBR PSi was prepared by either thermal oxidation or thermal hydrosilylation. Free-standing DBR PSi films were generated by lift-off from the silicon wafer substrate using an electropolishing current. Free-standing DBR PSi films were ultrasonicated to create DBR-structured porous smart particles. Three different surface-modified DBR smart particles have been prepared and used for sensing volatile organic vapors. For different types of surface-modified DBR smart particles, the shift of reflectivity mainly depends on the vapor pressure of analyte even though the surfaces of DBR smart particles are different. However huge difference in the shift of reflectivity depending on the different types of surface-modified DBR smart particles was obtained when the vapor pressures are quite similar which demonstrate a possible sensing application to specify the volatile organic vapors.

In this work, porous silicon (PS) layer is investigated as a sensing material to detect organic vapors such as ethanol (called alcohol), methanol, and acetone in low concentrations. To do this, PS sensors were fabricated. They have a membrane structure and comb-type electrodes were used to detect the change of electrical resistance effectively. PS layer on Si substrates was formed by anodization in HF solution of 25%. From fabricated sensors, current-voltage (Ⅰ-Ⅴ) curves were measured for gases evaporated from 0.1 to 0.5% organic solution concentrations at 36$\^{C}$. As the result, all curves showed rectifying behavior due to a diode structure between Si and the PS layer. The conductance of most sensors increased largely at high voltage of 5V, but the built-in potential on the measured Ⅰ-Ⅴ curve was lowered inversely by the adsorption effect of the organic vapors with high dipole moment.
The rugate porous silicons containing multiple photonic band gaps have been generated by applying a composite waveform summed three computer-generated pseudo-sinusoidal current waveforms and exhibit three sharp photonic band gaps in the optical reflectivity spectrum. Generated multiple rugate porous silicons display three rugate peaks corresponding to the each of the sine components varied from 0.42, 0.36, and 0.30 Hz, with a spacing of 0.06 Hz between each sine component. The resulting rugate PSi films have been removed from the silicon substrate by applying an lift-off current and are then made into particles by ultrasono-method in a organic solution. The sensing experiments using these particles for organic solvents such as toluene, hexane, acetone, and methanol have been achieved. Condensing of organic vapors in the pores increases the refractive indices of entire particle which results a red shift in the photonic peaks.

In this work, porous silicon(PS) layer is used as a sensing material to detect organic gases. To do this, PS sensors with membrane structure are fabricated. The sensors were made by applying the technologies of membrane formation by anisotropic etching of silicon, and PS layer formation by anodization in HF solution. From fabricated sensors, current-voltage (I-V) curves were measured against ethanol (called alcohol), methanol and acetone gases evaporated from 0.1 to 0.5% solution concentrations at $36^{\circ}C$. As the result, all curves showed rectifying behavior due to a diode structure between Si and PS, and the conductance of sensor devices increased largely with the organic solution concentration at high voltage of 5V.
The problem of polyaniline (PANi) sensor has been poor mechanical and chemical stability under atmosphere condition. In order to overcome these problems, the PANi sensor coated with polyvinylidenefluoride ($PVF_2$) was employed. The morphology of $PVF_2$ coated-PANi layer was showed smooth and transparent properties at 15% concentration of coating solution. The resistance of $PVF_2$ coated-PANi was kept at constant value and had a good stability at long-term periods in presence of humidity.
In this work, mesoporous silica (SBA-15) was synthesized via self-assembly process using triblock copolymer ($PEO_{20}PPO_{70}PEO_{20}$, P123) as template and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as silica source under acidic condition. SBA-15 have high surface area ($704m^2g^{-1}$) and uniform pore size (8.4 nm) with well-ordered hexagonal mesostructure. Spiropyran-functionalized SBA-15 (Spiropyran-SBA-15) was synthesized via post-synthesis process using 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate (TESPI) and 1-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-3,3-dimethy-lindolino-6'-nitrobenzopyrylo-spiran (HDINS). Spiropyran-SBA-15 was produced with hexagonal array of mesopores without damage of mesostructre. Surface area and pore size of Spiropyran-SBA-15 were $651m^2g^{-1}$ and 8.0 nm, respectively. Optochemical properties of Spiropyran-SBA-15 was studied with chemical vapors such as EtOH, THF, $CHCl_3$, Acetone and HCl. Main peaks of photofluorescence of Spiropyran-SBA-15 exhibited blue shift in the range of 603.4~592.1 nm after exposure under EtOH, THF, $CHCl_3$, and Acetone vapors. Normalized peak intensities decreased in the range of 0.8~0.3. The main peak of photofluorescence of Spiropyran-SBA-15 showed significant blue shift of 592.1 nm after exposure under HCl vapor, while normalized peak intensity decreased to 0.1.
Porous silicon exhibiting dual optical properties, both $Febry-P{\acute{e}}rot$ fringe (optical reflectivity) and photoluminescence had been developed and used as chemical sensors. Porous silicon samples were prepared by an electrochemical etch of p-type silicon wafer (boron-doped, <100> orientation, resistivity ; $1-10{\Omega}cm$). Two different types of porous silicon, fresh porous silicon (Si-H terminated) and oxidized porous silicon (Si-OH terminated)by the thermal oxidation, were prepared. Then the samples were exposed to the vapor of various organics, such as methanol, acetone, hexane, and toluene. Both reflectivity and photoluminescence were simultaneously measured under the exposure of organic vapors for sensing VOC's. These surface-modified samples showed unique respond in both reflectivity and photoluminescence with various organic vapors. While polar molecules exhibit greater quenching photoluminescence, molecules having higher vapor pressure show greater red shift for reflectivity.
To observe and analyze the characteristics of cloud and precipitation properties, the Cloud physics Observation System (CPOS) has been operated from December 2003 at Daegwallyeong ($37.4^{\circ}N$, $128.4^{\circ}E$, 842 m) in the Taebaek Mountains. The major instruments of CPOS are follows: Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP), Optical Particle Counter (OPC), Visibility Sensor (VS), PARSIVEL disdrometer, Microwave Radiometer (MWR), and Micro Rain Radar (MRR). The former four instruments (FSSP, OPC, visibility sensor, and PARSIVEL) are for the observation and analysis of characteristics of the ground cloud (fog) and precipitation, and the others are for the vertical cloud characteristics (http://weamod.metri.re.kr) in real time. For verification of CPOS products, the comparison between the instrumental products has been conducted: the qualitative size distributions of FSSP and OPC during the hygroscopic seeding experiments, the precipitable water vapors of MWR and radiosonde, and the rainfall rates of the PARSIVEL(or MRR) and rain gauge. Most of comparisons show a good agreement with the correlation coefficient more than 0.7. These reliable CPOS products will be useful for the cloud-related studies such as the cloud-aerosol indirect effect or cloud seeding. The visibility value is derived from the droplet size distribution of FSSP. The derived FSSP visibility shows the constant overestimation by 1.7 to 1.9 times compared with the values of two visibility sensors (SVS (Sentry Visibility Sensor) and PWD22 (Present Weather Detect 22)). We believe this bias is come from the limitation of the droplet size range ($2{\sim}47\;{\mu}m$) measured by FSSP. Further studies are needed after introducing new instruments with other ranges.
