When IoT sensor nodes are deployed in areas where data collection is challenging, sensors must be relocated if sensing holes occur due to improper placement of sensors or energy depletion, and data collection is impossible. The sensing hole's cluster header transmits a request message for sensor relocation to an adjacent cluster header through a specific relay node. However, since a specific relay node is frequently used, a member sensor located in a specific cluster area adjacent to the sensing hole can continuously receive the movement message. In this paper, we propose a method that avoids the situation in which the sensing hole cluster header monopolizes a specific relay node and allows the cluster header to use multiple relay nodes fairly. Unlike the existing method in which the relay node immediately responds to the request of the header, the method proposed in this paper solves a ping-pong problem and a problem that the request message is concentrated on a specific relay node by applying a method of responding to the request of the header using a timer. OMNeT++ simulator was used to analyze the performance of the proposed method.

This paper investigates the spectrum hole utilization of cooperative schemes for the two-way relaying model in order to improve the utilization efficiency of limited spectrum holes in cognitive radio networks with imperfect spectrum sensing. We propose two specific bidirectional secondary data transmission (BSDT) schemes with two-step and three-step two-way relaying models, i.e., two-BSDT and three-BSDT schemes, where the spectrum sensing and the secondary data transmission are jointly designed. In the proposed cooperative schemes, the best two-way relay channel between two secondary users is selected from a group of secondary users serving as cognitive relays and assists the bi-directional communication between the two secondary users without a direct link. The closed-form asymptotic expressions for outage probabilities of the two schemes are derived with a primary user protection constraint over Rayleigh fading channels. Based on the derived outage probabilities, the spectrum hole utilization is calculated to evaluate the percentage of spectrum holes used by the two secondary users for their successful information exchange without channel outage. Numerical results show that the spectrum hole utilization depends on the spectrum sensing overhead and the channel gain from a primary user to secondary users. Additionally, we compare the spectrum hole utilization of the two schemes as the varying of secondary signal to noise ratio, the number of cognitive relays, and symmetric and asymmetric channels.

For successful deformable part assembly, information about its deformation as well as possible misalignment between the hole and its respective mating part are essential. Such information can be mainly acquired from visual sensors. In this paper, part deformation and misalignment in deformable cylindrical peg-in-hole tasks are measured by using a visual sensing system. First, a series of experiments to measure the position of an arbitrary point are performed. Next, an algorithm to measure misalignment and part shape as part deformation are presented, and a series of experiments on them are performed. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms and the system are effective in measuring part deformation and misalignment.
In this paper, we investigated the sensing ability of an extraordinary optical transmission sensor, which is based on the diverse configurations of highly ordered structures. The diverse nanostructures of subwavelength hole array were designed to have different periods and lattice configurations of the array. To verify the sensing ability of the sensor, we measured the transmittance spectra of samples (n = 1.333, 1.363) for diverse configurations of substrates. The measured transmittance spectra of diverse materials with different refractive indices show that the sensitivity increased as the period of the structures increased. Also, improved sensing performance of the sensor was achieved for the square array, compared to the hexagonal array.
Since the sensor nodes are randomly arranged in the region of interest, it may happen that the sensor network area is separated or there is no sensor node in some area. In addition, after the sensor nodes are deployed in the sensor network, a coverage hole may occur due to the exhaustion of energy or physical destruction of the sensor nodes. The coverage hole can greatly affect the overall performance of the sensor network, such as reducing the data reliability of the sensor network, changing the network topology, disconnecting the data link, and worsening the transmission load. Therefore, sensor network coverage hole recovery has been studied. Existing coverage hole recovery studies present very complex geometric methods and procedures in the two-step process of finding a coverage hole and recovering a coverage hole. This study proposes a method for discovering and recovering a coverage hole in a sensor network, discovering that the sensor node is a boundary node by itself, and determining the location of a mobile node to be added. The proposed method is expected to have better efficiency in terms of complexity and message transmission compared to previous methods.
An amperometric ascorbic acid selective sensor utilizing the transfer reaction of proton liberated from the dissociation of ascorbic acid in aqueous solution across an elliptic micro-hole water/organic gel interface is demonstrated. This redox inactive sensing platform offers an alternative way for the detection of ascorbic acid to avoid a fouling effect which is one of the major concerns in redox based sensing systems. The detection principle is simply measuring the current change with respect to the assisted transfer of protons by a proton selective ionophore (e.g., ETH 1778) across the micro-hole interface between the water and the polyvinylchloride-2-nitrophenyloctylether gel phase. The assisted transfer reaction of protons generated from ascorbic acid across the polarized micro-hole interface was first characterized using cyclic voltammetry. An improved sensitivity for the quantitative analysis of ascorbic acid was achieved using differential pulse stripping voltammetry with a linear response ranging from 1 to $100\;{\mu}M$ concentrations of ascorbic acid. As a demonstration, the developed sensor was applied for analyzing the content of vitamin-C in different types of commercial pharmaceutical tablets and syrups, and a satisfactory recovery from these samples were also obtained.

Due to the variety of signal processing and complicated mathematical analysis, it is not easy to accomplish 3D bin-picking with non-contact sensor. To solve this difficulties the reliable signal processing algorithm and a good sensing device has been recommended. In this research, 3D laser scanner and CCD camera is applied as a sensing device respectively. With these sensor we develop a two-step bin-picking method and reliable algorithm for the recognition of 3D bin object. In the proposed bin-picking, the problem is reduced to 2D intial recognition with CCD camera at first, and then 3D pose detection with a laser scanner. To get a good movement in the robot base frame, the hand eye calibration between robot's end effector and sensing device should be also carried out. In this paper, we examine auto-calibration technique in the sensor calibration step. A new thinning algorithm and constrained hough transform is also studied for the robustness in the real environment usage. From the experimental results, we could see the robust bin-picking operation under the non-aligned 3D hole object.
Bridge scour is the predominant cause of overwater bridge failures in North America and around the world. Several sensing systems have been developed over the years to detect the extent of scour so that preventative actions can be performed in a timely manner. These sensing systems have drawbacks, such as signal inaccuracy and discontinuity, installation difficulty, and high cost. Therefore, attempts to develop more efficient monitoring schemes continue. In this study, the viability of using optical dissolved oxygen (DO) probes for monitoring scour depths was explored. DO levels are very low in streambed sediments, as compared to the standard level of oxygen in flowing water. Therefore, scour depths can be determined by installing sensors to monitor DO levels at various depths along the buried length of a bridge pier or abutment. The measured DO is negligible when a sensor is buried but would increase significantly once scour occurs and exposes the sensor to flowing water. A set of experiments was conducted in which four dissolved oxygen probes were embedded at different soil depths in the vicinity of a mock bridge pier inside a laboratory flume simulating scour conditions. The results confirmed that DO levels jumped drastically when sensors became exposed during scour hole evolution, thereby providing discrete measurements of the maximum scour depth. Moreover, the DO probes could detect any subsequent refilling of the scour hole through the deposition of sediments. The effect of soil permeability on the sensing response time was also investigated.

In this paper, drill fred mechanism, cutting depth measuring device and sensing buzzer of drill contact were investigated in order to develop the micro-hole drilling machine. Also, measuring device of cutting resistance was developed in order to estimate cutting resistance from change of cutting condition. The results show that extremely-low fled rate(less then $17{\mu}m/S$${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ /s) can be done and cutting depth can be measured by up to 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with developed drilling machine. Accordingly we could assemble a very cheap micro-hole drilling machine($\phi$ 0.05~0.5 mm). Also we got the some properties of cutting performance i.e. under the same condition, cutting torque decreases as increase of spindle speed and rapid fled of drill brings about the inferior cutting state under low spindle speed.

Scour is one of the leading causes of overwater bridge failures worldwide. While monitoring systems have already been implemented or are still being developed, they suffer from limitations such as high costs, inaccuracies, and low reliability, among others. Also, most sensors only measure scour depth at one location and near the pier. Thus, the objective is to design a simple, low cost, scour hole topography monitoring system that could better characterize the entire depth, shape, and size of bridge scour holes. The design is based on burying a robust, waterproofed, piezoelectric sensor strip in the streambed. When scour erodes sediments to expose the sensor, flowing water excites it to cause the generation of time-varying voltage signals. An algorithm then takes the time-domain data and maps it to the frequency-domain for identifying the sensor's resonant frequency, which is used for calculating the exposed sensor length or scour depth. Here, three different sets of tests were conducted to validate this new technique. First, a single sensor was tested in ambient air, and its exposed length was varied. Upon verifying the sensing concept, a waterproofed prototype was buried in soil and tested in a tank filled with water. Sensor performance was characterized as soil was manually eroded away, which simulated various scour depths. The results confirmed that sensor resonant frequencies decreased with increasing scour depths. Finally, a network of 11 sensors was configured to form a distributed monitoring system in the lab. Their exposed lengths were adjusted to simulate scour hole formation and evolution. Results showed promise that the proposed sensing system could be scaled up and used for bridge scour topography monitoring.
