  • Since open-cut mining excavates gradually from the top of the mountain, vegetation planting is needed to reduce negative environmental impact on the surrounding environment. Accordingly, this study aimed at performing the environmental monitoring of the open-cut mining ground using the satellite remote sensing technique. As the research technique, in order to grasp the environmental change around the open-cut mining ground, NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) was calculated, and every year change of the vegetation activity was analyzed. The results of the study showed lower vegetation activity in the open-cut mining ground compared to the surrounding areas and suggested the need for closed monitoring by remote sensing techniques.

  • VO2 has intensively investigated for several decades due to its interesting physical properties, including metal-insulator transition (MIT), thermochromic and thermoelectric properties, near the room temperature. And also gas and photo sensing properties of VO2 nanowires have attracted increasing research interest due to the high sensitivity and multi-sensing capability. We studied the light-induced resistance change of VO2 nanowires. In particular, we have investigated plasmonic enhancement of the photo-sensing properties of the VO2 nanowires. To select proper wavelength, we performed finite-difference time-domain simulations of electric field distribution in the VO2 nanowires attached with Ag nanoparticles. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is expected at wavelength of 560 nm. The photo-sensitivity was carefully examined as a function of the sample temperature. In the presentation, we will discuss physical origins of the photo-induced resistance change in VO2.

  • Portable electronic devices secondary batteries can cause fire and explosion due to micro-current change in addition to the situation of short-circuit inrush current, safety can not be secured with a general operation limited current fuse. Therefore, in secondary battery, it is necessary for the protector to satisfy both the limit current type operation in the open-short-circuit inrush current and the current detection operation characteristic in the micro current change situation and for this operation, a fuse for the current detection type secondary battery protection circuit can be applied. The purpose of this study is to design a protection device that operates stably in the hazardous situation of small capacity secondary battery for portable electronic devices through the design of low melting fuse elements alloy of sensing type fuse and secures stability in abnormal current state. As a result of the experiment, I-T and V-T operation characteristics are satisfied in a the design of the alloy of the current sensing type self-contained low melting point fuse and the resistance of the heating resistor. It is confirmed that it can prevent accidents of short circuit over-current and micro current change of secondary battery.

  • Land surface temperature (LST) is a critical environmental indicator affected by land cover (LC) changes. Currently, the most convenient and fastest way to retrieve LST is to use remote sensing images due to their continuous monitoring of the Earth's surface. The work intended to investigate land cover change and temperature response inAn-Najaf province. Landsat multispectral imageries acquired inAugust 1989, 2004, and 2021 were employed to estimate land cover change and LST responses. The findings exhibited an increase in water bodies, built-up areas, plantations, and croplands by 7.78%, 7.27%, 6.98%, 3.24%, and 7.78%, respectively, while bare soil decreased by 25.27% for the period (1989-2021). This indicates a transition from barren lands to different land cover types. The contribution index (CI) was employed to depict how changes in land cover categories altered mean region surface temperatures. The highest LSTs recorded were in bare lands (42.2℃, 44.25℃, and 46.9℃), followed by built-up zones (41.6℃, 43.96℃, and 44.89℃), cropland (30.9℃, 32.96℃, and 34.76℃), plantations (35.4℃, 36.97℃, and 38.92℃), and water bodies (27.3℃, 29.35℃, and 29.68℃) respectively, in 1989, 2004, and 2021. Consequently, these changes resulted in significant variances in LST between different LC types.

  • The objective of this paper is to extract and analyze the sediment environment change information in the Sachencheon, Gangneung, Korea that was seriously damaged as a result of typhoon Rusa aftermath early in September, 2002 using multi-temporal remote sensing data. For the extraction of change information, an unsupervised approach based on the automatic determination of thresholding values was applied. As the change detection results, turbidity changes right after typhoon Rusa, the decrease of wetlands, the increase of dry sand and channel width and changes of relative level in the stream due to seasonal variation were observed. Sedimentation in the cultivated areas and restoration works also affected the change near the Sacheoncheon. In addition to the change detection analysis, several environmental thematic maps including microtopographic map, distributions of estimated amount of flood deposits and flood hazard landform classification map were generated by using remote sensing and field survey data. In conclusion, multi-temporal remote sensing data can be effectively used for natural hazard analysis and damage information extraction and specific data processing techniques for high-resolution remote sensing data should also be developed.

  • This paper addresses a new type of broad and stage-based hybrid carbon fiber reinforced polymer (HCFRP) sensor that is suitable for the sensing of infrastructures. The HCFRP sensors, a type of composite sensor, are fabricated with three types of carbon tows of different strength and moduli. For all of the specimens, the active materials are carbon tows by virtue of their electrical conductivity and piezoresistivity. The measurement principles are based on the micro- and macro-fractures of different types of carbon tows. A series of experiments are carried out to investigate the sensing performances of the HCFRP sensors. The main variables include the stack order and volume fractions of different types of carbon tows. It is shown that the change in electrical resistance is in direct proportion to the strain/load in low strain ranges. However, the fractional change in electrical resistance (${\Delta}R/R_0$) is smaller than 2% prior to the macrofractures of carbon tows. In order to improve the resistance changes, measures are taken that can enhance the values of ${\Delta}R/R_0$ by more than 2 times during low strain ranges. In high strain ranges, the electrical resistance changes markedly with strain/load in a step-wise manner due to the gradual ruptures of different types of carbon tows at different strain amplitudes. The values of ${\Delta}R/R_0$ due to the fracture of high modulus carbon tows are larger than 36%. Thus, it is demonstrated that the HCFRP sensors have a broad and stage-based sensing capability.

  • Change detection, which finds changes in remote sensing images of the same location captured at different times, is very important because it is used in various applications. However, registration errors, building displacement errors, and shadow errors cause false positives. To solve these problems, we propose a novle deep convolutional network called CADNet (Change Attention Dense Siamese Network). CADNet uses FPN (Feature Pyramid Network) to detect multi-scale changes, applies a Change Attention Module that attends to the changes, and uses DenseNet as a feature extractor to use feature maps that contain both low-level and high-level features for change detection. CADNet performance measured from the Precision, Recall, F1 side is 98.44%, 98.47%, 98.46% for WHU datasets and 90.72%, 91.89%, 91.30% for LEVIR-CD datasets. The results of this experiment show that CADNet can offer better performance than any other traditional change detection method.

  • The Fourth Assessment Report of IPCC predicted that global warming is already happening and it should be caused from the increase of greenhouse gases by the extension of human activities. These global changes will give a serious influence for human society. Global environment can be monitored by the earth observation using satellite. For the observation of global climate change and resolving the global warming process, satellite should be useful equipment and its detecting data contribute to social benefits effectively. JAXA (former NASDA) has made a new plan of the Global Change Observation Mission (GCOM) for monitoring of global environmental change. SGLI (Second Generation GLI) onboard GCOM-C (Climate) satellite, which is one of this mission, provides an optical sensor from Near-DV to TIR. Characteristic specifications of SGLI are as follows; 1) 250 m resolutions over land and area along the shore, 2) Three directional polarization observation (red and NIR), and 3) 500 m resolutions temperature over land and area along shore. These characteristics are useful in many fields of social benefits. For example, multi-angular observation and 250 m high frequency observation give new knowledge in monitoring of land vegetation. It is expected that land products with land aerosol information by polarization observation are improved remarkably. We are studying these possibilities by ground data and satellite data.

  • Background and Objectives : Electrolarynx has been used as one of the methods of rehabilitation for the laryngectomees. Previous electrolarynx could not alter frequency and intensity simultaneously. This institute developed an electrolarynx named "Evada" using FSR(force sensing resistor) sensor, which can control the frequency(and/or intensity) simultaneously. This study was performed for the normal control and laryngectomees with three types of electrolarynx (Evada, Servox-inton, Nu-vois) to reveal functional characteristics of Evada Materials and Methods : five laryngectomees and five normal adults were made to express there sentences(discriptive sentence, "You stay here" ; question sentence, "You stay here?" ; exclamation sentence, "You!! stay here!"), using three types of electrolarynx. Frequency change and intensity change from first and last vowel was calculated in three sentences and analyzed statistically by paired T-test. Results : The frequency change in the question sentence and exclamation sentence was more prominent in Evada than in Servox-inton and Nu-vois. The intensity change in the question sentence and exclamation sentence was also more prominent in Evada than in Servox-inton and Nu-vois. Conclusions : Evada could control frequency and intensity simultaneously and control degree of frequency(and/or intensity) according to the pressing force into the button. Evada could adjust continuously frequency and intensity during conversation. So, Evada is better in producing intonation and contrastive stress than Nu-vois and Servox-inton.
