  • This paper proposes an improved mathematical model for predicting the frosting behavior on a two-dimensional fin considering the heat conduction of heat exchanger fins under frosting conditions. The model consists of laminar flow equation in airflow, diffusion equation of water vapor for frost layer, and heat conduction equation in fin, and these are coupled together. In this model, the change in three-dimensional airside airflow caused by frost growth is accounted for. The fin surface temperature increased toward the fin tip due to the fin heat conduction. On the contrary, the temperature gradient in the airflow direction(x-dir.) is small throughout the entire fin. The frost thickness in the direction perpendicular to airflow, i.e. z-dir., decreases exponentially toward the fin tip due to non-uniform temperature distribution. The rate of decrease of heat transfer in the airflow direction is high compared to that in the z-direction due to more decrease in the sensible and latent heat rate in x-direction.

  • In this study, in-situ performance test of a wet surface finned-tube evaporator of an air source heat pump which has a rating capacity of 20 RT is carried out. Since test conditions, such as indoor and outdoor air conditions cannot be controlled to satisfy the standard test conditions, experiments are done with the inlet air conditions as they exist. From the experimental data, air side heat and mass transfer coefficients were calculated by the well known heat and mass transfer analogy and tube-by-tube method. Since current procedure underpredicted the experimental sensible heat factor (SHF), a proper empirical parameter was introduced to predict the experimental data with satisfactory results. This study provides the method of evaluating the heat and mass transfer coefficients of a wet surface finned-tube evaporator of which in-situ performance test is necessary.

  • T-history method, measuring heat-of-fusion of phase change material (PCM) in sealed tubes, has the advantages of a simple experimental device and no requirements in sampling process. However, a degree of supercooling used in selecting the range of latent heat release and neglecting sensible heat during the phase change process can cause significant errors in determining the heat of fusion in the original method, which has been improved in order to predict better results by us. In the present study, the modified method was applied to a variety of PCM such as paraffin and lauric acid having very small or no supercooling with a satisfactory precision. Also the selection of inflection point and temperature measurement position was fumed out not to affect the accuracy of heat-of-fusion significantly. As a result, the method can provide an appropriate means to assess a new developed PCM by cycle test even if a very accurate value cannot be obtained.

  • The purpose of this study is to predict the performance of an indirect evaporative cooling system, and to evaluate its energy saving effect when applied to the exhaust heat recovery system of an air-handling unit. We derive the performance correlation of the indirect evaporative cooling system using a plastic heat exchanger based on experimental data obtained in various conditions. We predict the variations in the performance of the system for various return and outdoor air conditioning systems using the obtained correlation. We also analyze the energy saving of the system realized by the exhaust heat recovery using the typical meteorological data for several cities in Korea. The average utilization rate of the sensible cooling system for the exhaust heat recovery is 44.3% during summer, while that of the evaporative cooling system is 96.7%. The energy saving of the evaporative cooling system is much higher compared to the sensible cooling system, and was about 3.89 times the value obtained in Seoul.

  • A land surface parameterization has been used to simulate influences of the terrestrial surface on the atmosphere. A simple biosphere model (SiB2), one of land surface parameterization, calculates exchange of radiation, sensible heat, latent heat, and momentum between the surface and the atmosphere (Sellers, et al., 1996).(omitted)

  • A simplified heat transfer model for the cooling capability of the AP 600 PCCS is proposed I this paper. As the PCCS domain is covered with very thin and long water film, it is phenomenologically divided into 3 regions; water entrance effect region, asymptotic region, and air entrance effect region. As the length of the asymptotic region is estimated to be over 90% of the whole domain, the phenomena in the asymptotic region is focused. Using the analogy between heat and mass transfer phenomena in a turbulent situation, a new dependent variable combining temperature and vapor mass fraction was defined. The similarity between the PCCs phenomena in the asymptotic region and the buoyant air flow phenomena on a vertical heated plate is derived. Using the similarity, the simplified heat transfer correlations for the interfacial heat fluxes and the ratios of latent heat transfer to sensible heat transfer were established. To verify the accuracy of the correlation, the results of this study were compared with those of other numerical analyses performed for the same configuration and they are well within the range of 15% difference.

  • Heat transfer phenomena in a high-temperature heat storage unit were investigated using molten salts. Carbonate salt, an equimolar mixture of $Li_2CO_3$ and $K_2CO_3$, which melts at $505^{\circ}C$ with a latent heat of 82 cal/g, was selected as the most promising latent heat storage material based on its low cost and excellent thermophysical properties at moderately high temperatures. It was also found that nitrate salts were good candidates of sensible heat storage materials. For the carbonate salt to be utilized commercially, however, several means of enhancing thermal recovery must be explored by promoting heat conduction through the solid salt formed during the heat discharge period. These would be achieved by the additions of aluminum screens and wool, and stainless fins. Finally, experimental results of moving boundary of phase change were well compared with predictied values obtained from the approximate solution.

  • Though conventional calorimetry methods such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) are used generally in measuring heat of fusion, T-history method has the advantages of a simple experimental apparatus and no requirements of sampling process, which is particularly useful for measuring thermal properties of inhomogeneous phase change materials (PCMs) in sealed tubes. However, random criteria (a degree of supercooling) used in selecting the range of latent heat release and neglecting sensible heat during the phase change process can cause significant errors in determining the heat of fusion. In the present study, it was shown that a 40% discrepancy exists between the original T-history and the present methods when analyzing the same experimental data. As a result, a reasonable modification to the original T-history method is proposed.

  • Due to the plasma applied from the outside, which acts as an etchant during the etching process, considerable heat is transferred to the wafer and a separate cooling process is performed to effectively remove the heat after the process. In this case, a direct cooling method using a refrigerant is suitable for cooling through effective heat exchange. The direct cooling method using the refrigerant using the latent heat exchange is superior to the cooling method using the sensible heat exchange. Therefore, in this paper, AMESim is used to design a direct refrigerant cooling system using latent heat exchange simulator was built. The constructed simulator is reliable compared with the actual experimental results. It is expected that this simulator will help to design and search for optimal process conditions.
