Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the needs of the senior welfare center users of the health service program, and to establish a plan to adjust the health service functions of the senior center. Methods: A survey of 2,130 users of the Gyeonggi-do Senior Welfare Center was conducted from May 28 to June 30, 2018. Results: The major results of the study are as follows. First, 66.8 percent of senior welfare center users were willing to participate in health care. The requirement for health service programs was 3.87 points out of 5 points followed by cognitive ability improvement programs, senior movement programs, and chronic disease programs in lower areas. Second, the factors affecting the needs of health care service programs of senior welfare center users had a significant impact on women; the younger the age, the better the subjective health condition; the higher the number of medical conditions, the lower the out-of-patient experience; the longer the welfare center isused, the more people are willing to participate in healthcare. Conclusions: We believe that there is a need for social service policies and management to better understand the situation of senior citizens who are demanding various services due to illness and to integrate health and welfare services.
To make provision for the super-aged society, the senior welfare facility which is a kind of typical physical environment of the nursing service would be expected to perform a very important role in local community. This study was conducted to identify the constructs of the servicescapes of senior welfare facility and to draw analysis indicators of it. For this, we performed literature review based on domestic & foreign government guide, service marketing theory and interior architectural results concerning the physical environment of the senior welfare facility. The result of this study showed as follows: servicescapes of the senior welfare facility could be explained as "a whole set of physical environment to support a variety of services provided by the senior welfare facility for the elderly or services of the kind of tangible clues". Analysis indicators of the senior welfare facility's servicescape could be explained as five factors: safety factor, functional factor, aesthetic factor, ambient factor and social factor. In addition we developed 37 pieces of detailed factors referred to five factors. The evaluation and verification of analysis indicators was carried out through 8 experts in-depth interviews. We inspected importance factor using a 5-point Likert scale, therefore safety factor was 4.41, functional factor was 4.27, aesthetic factor was 3.66, ambient factor was 4.20 and social factor was 4.25. More than anything else, in this study, there is a sense that it has established the concept of servicescape adapted to the senior welfare facility and contained a social element between the employees and the physical environment. Theoretical and practical implications of findings are discussed, and future research directions are proposed. we expect to be a little or benefits to the senior welfare facility corresponding to the future of the super-aged society.
This study examined the characteristics of the foodservice menu items offered at senior welfare centers to provide information on Korean senior menu development. A total of 514 lunch menu items were collected from 27 senior welfare centers in April, July, October and January. The most frequently served staple foods, soups, and side dishes were multi-grain rice, seaweed soup, Bulgogi, Kimchi, and liquid yogurt. The proportions of carbohydrate, protein, and lipids of total energy serving of senior welfare centers were 59.8%: 16.7%: and 22.8%, respectively. The nutrients served at less than 40% of the Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) and Adequate Intake (AI) of Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans (KDRIs) were chloride (1.0%), vitamin D (1.3%), biotin (1.7%), magnessium (4.5%), Iodine (7.5%), pantothenic acid (8.0%), vitamin E (12.5%), vitamin $B_6$ (20.0~21.4%), vitamin K (21.1~24.3%), and water (35.7~39.7%). The nutrients served in excess of the daily intake goal and RNI were iron (98.9~127.1%), sodium (104.9%), and copper (1,100.0%).
Light is an essential environmental element for elderly people to do various activities. At senior welfare centers, healthy indoor lighting is especially necessary because the facilities are used by the elderly to perform their mostly indoor activities. The purpose of this study is to evaluate light environments at senior welfare centers for well-being lighting characteristics. We based the study on the 'Biophilia' theory, a concept related to health from happiness. Thus, this study is mainly based on literary review and survey research. For this, we conducted a location focused field study to identify the current state of the lighting environments at senior welfare centers in Busan, South Korea. First, we constructed structural questionnaire to evaluate lighting environment based on 'Light and Space' biophilia theory. Then, to survey subjective evaluation, the participant of research included total of 122 senior welfare center users. Based on the results of this research, the conclusions are as follows; 1) overall, it seems that the overall result of the light environmental evaluation seems to be high because the evaluated facilities in the case survey in large-scale were recently built elderly welfare centers. 2) most of the healing design elements are focused on the introduction of natural light and psychological influence. The satisfaction with actual natural light is evaluated to be high. Although shadow and reflected light are very important in discrimination and recognition of indoor space and wayfinding, the evaluation of reflected light and shadow was low for the study. 3) items that are related to the functionality of the light were highly evaluated, while the items that are related to the spatiality of the light were rated poorly. This study has its significance when examining the effects of light environments within the welfare center form of the perspective of senior citizens. It can be referenced when reconsidering the recognition of light environment as a major consideration factor to establish a desirable senior welfare center environment.

Purpose: In our country, the aged population accounted for about 13% of the total population in 2018. In addition, it is expected to exceed 20% in 2026, entering an super-aged society. However, the senior welfare housing in Korea currently accommodates only 0.08% of the elderly population, and the increasing amount of the elderly population is very small. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the causes of supply shortages and to propose directions for revitalizing the supply of welfare housing for the elderly in the private sector. Methods: First, the causes and problems of the poor supply of welfare housing for the elderly were analyzed. Next, the direction was proposed through institutional and case-by-case surveys and expert interviews. Results: It suggested directions such as legal and institutional improvement, inducing the use of REITs, preparing policies to support consumers, allocating a certain percentage of senior welfare housing for the elderly in the reconstruction project, improving awareness of monthly living expenses, and re-discussing sales permits. Implications: Experts said that the direction proposed in this study can have a positive effect on supply activation. However, there were many opinions that re-discussion on permission for sales was necessary due to the excessive impact of the inability to sell. In addition, further research is needed for specific application of the proposed direction.

Purpose: This study aims to suggest an analysis model finding the relationship between building scale characteristics of Public-use facilities and infectious disease outbreaks around senior leisure welfare facilities and the features and their scopes where quarantine resources are to be concentrated. Methods: Reviewing previous studies found the user characteristics of senior leisure welfare facilities and scale characteristics of urban architectures. The data preprocessing was performed after collecting building data and infectious disease outbreak data in the analysis area. This study derived data for attributes of building size and frequency of infectious disease outbreaks in Public-use facilities around senior leisure welfare facilities. A computing algorithm was implemented to analyze the correlation between the building size characteristics and the infectious disease outbreak frequency as per the change of the spatial scope. Results: The results of this study are as follows: First, the suggested model was to analyze the correlation between the infection frequency and the number of senior leisure welfare facilities, the number of Public-use facilities, building area, total floor area, site area, height, building-to-land ratio, and floor area ratio varied as per the change of spatial scope. Second, correlation results varied between the infection frequency and the number of senior leisure welfare facilities, the number of Public-use facilities, building area, total floor area, site area, height, building-to-land ratio, and floor area ratio. Third, a negative correlation appeared in the analysis between the number of senior leisure welfare facilities and infection frequency. And positive correlations appeared noticeably in the study between the number of Public-use facilities, building area, total floor area, height, building-to-land ratio, and floor area ratio. Implications: This study can be used as primary data on the utilization of limited quarantine resources by analyzing the relationship between the Public-use facilities around the senior leisure welfare facilities and the spread of infectious diseases. In addition, it suggests that infectious disease prevention measures are necessary considering the spatial scope of the analysis area and the size of buildings.

This study was conducted to grasp senior education programs with the purpose of providing senior education services and researching program development of public libraries for elderly population of an aging society. Senior education programs provided by 33 Senior Welfare Centers and 41 public libraries in Seoul were compared in terms of, 6 subjects such as health, literacy/education, information education, death preparation education, hobbies and employment/volunteer. The Senior Welfare Center provided much more senior programs, whereas the public libraries appeared that the number of institutions participating in senior services was very few, and the program provision for elderly population appeared to be extremely insufficient. A specific course schedule of the program of 'making of a happiness map' of death preparation education, which is one theme among them, was developed.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate food safety practices and knowledge of foodservice workers at senior welfare centers. A self-administrated questionnaire was administered to 1200 foodservice workers at senior welfare centers in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi province. Two hundred five responses were returned, with 181 usable for analysis. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS for Windows(ver.14.0). Volunteers of respondents comprised 64.1% while chefs and employees comprised 20.9%. Food safety practices were assessed using a 5-point scale(1: strongly disagree - 5: strongly agree), and the average score of food safety practices was 4.27. For specific practices, 'personal hygiene (4.46)' scored the highest, followed by 'cleaning and sanitizing(4.43)', 'separate handing(4.40)', 'cooking process(4.11)', and 'receiving and storing(4.05)'. There were significant differences in the practice average score by age(p<0.01) and experience of food safety education(p<0.01). The total score for food safety knowledge was 14.43 out of 20 points. In the category of food knowledge, 'equipment and facility(80.5%)' had the highest correct answer rate, followed by 'personnel hygiene(75.9%)', 'cooking process(70.4%)', and 'cleaning sanitizing(65.8%)'. There were significant differences in the knowledge total score by job type(p<0.05), age(p<0.05), working experience(p<0.05), chef certification (p<0.01), and frequency of food safety education(p<0.01). The knowledge and practice scores were significantly correlated(p<0.01). This study suggests that food safety education for foodservice workers should be conducted continuously and repetitively, and the development of proper education materials is needed to improve the effectiveness of food safety education for chefs, employees and volunteers at senior welfare centers.
Purpose. This study was to suggest an appropriate understanding and attitude toward the long-term senior recuperation insurance through examining the perception of the aforementioned system from the viewpoint of the elderly population. Methods. This study was conducted on 150 participants who were aged 65 years and over in a nursing hospital, a senior citizen center and participating social welfare programs in Gyeong Gi area. Researchers visited a nursing hospital, a senior citizen center, and a senior welfare center to organize times before conducting questionnaires after interviewing individual elderly participants. Results. The results are as follows: The probability of the long-term senior recuperation insurance implementation is higher amongst the younger participants, those with average health status and where the system is recognized by neighbors, relatives and/or family. The largest group of participants show only a moderate interest in the long-term senior recuperation insurance. The attitude toward using the long-term senior recuperation insurance system in the future is undetermined due to lack of awareness. Conclusions. Although the long-term senior recuperation insurance system is for all citizens, it is important to provide the correct information to the target audience, the elderly, and raise the awareness of the system so that they have access to the necessary services.
This study has examined layout of communal outdoor space and welfare facilities in the nation's very first senior apartment complex in Segok-dong, Gangnam-gu that has been developed by Seoul City. In order for this space to play a role as a center of communication: 1) A center space of community should be created at the point of intersection of main moving lines of pedestrians. 2) Hierarchical area should be set up between main moving lines of walking and communal outdoor space. 3) It should be designed in a way to reflect demands of seniors and be accommodated their activities and behaviors. 4) It should be functionally connected to local infrastructure facilities so that it can promote social exchanges among seniors. Points to be considered in welfare facilities: 1) They should be placed at the center of the complex to provide convenience to all seniors. 2) Area of senior citizen center should be subject to flexible legal regulation in light of the unique characteristics of the Complex. 3) in case that welfare facilities are installed in the same space, intermediate space is required to alleviate collision between private space and public space. 4) Senior assistance facilities should put more emphasis on running programs that make good use of the space than on securing the space itself.
