  • This paper aims to examine how well university students, who are going to be primary school teachers, understand the International System of Units (SI), focusing on seven basic units such as 'm', '㎏', '㏖', 'A', 'K', 's', 'cd'. This study specifically investigates whether the students know the seven units and understand their uses and how they read and learn them. The subjects were 1030 students from the University of Education in Jinju, Geongsangnamdo. Data was collected through a questionnaire which was designed by this researcher and checked by an authority, and the frequency and percentage of reponses to each question were obtained and analysed. Findings show all the students knew very well that 'm' and '㎏' are included in the seven units, compared to the others which low percentage of the students considered as the elements. In terms of understanding of use, the units of the length 'm', the mass '㎏', and the time 's' are well understood, presumably, because they are often used in ordinary life and school, while the amount of substance '㏖', the electric current 'A', the thermodynamic temperature 'K', and the luminous intensity 'cd' are not as well understood. It is probably because 'A', 'cd', and 'K' are hardly used in everyday life. With respect to reading the units, the subjects read 'm', '㎏', '㏖', and's' much better than the others. As for the source of learning them, most students answered they learned them in schools, which implies school education is very important. From these results it is concluded that school education should be accompanied with use in everyday life for understanding and using the units. SI Base Units understanding was investigated by an academic year. According to this investigation, generally the right answer rate differed 4<2<3<1 by an academic year in order. For the Senior, Sophomore appeared the right answer rate more high. because, they learned before in deepening or elementary course on chemistry and physics related with SI Base Units. On the other hand, for the junior answered low rate by this reason that they couldn't remember about SI Base Units that learned before. For the Freshman appeared low rate by this reason that they were not learned or graduated from the department of liberal art in high school.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify: (a) the latent profiles of the difficulties associated with the schoolto-work transition (decline in confidence, mood swings, family disagreements, the burdens of familial expectations, economic hardship, and a lack of support) made by university students, (b) predictors (gender, age, grade, university location, co-residence with parents on weekdays, monthly household income, and parental educational attainment) of these profiles, and (c) how the profiles were associated with mental wellbeing. The participants of this study were 311 senior or above students (164 males and 147 females) under the age of 29, who were unmarried and preparing for employment. The findings of this study were as follows. First, the latent profile analysis revealed three distinct profiles: the "low overall difficulties" type (25.4%), the "moderate overall difficulties" type (49.9%), and the "high overall difficulties" type (24.7%). Second, the factors that predicted each profile included gender, age, co-residence with parents on weekdays, monthly household income, and parental educational attainment. Third, the "low overall difficulties" type demonstrated the highest level of mental well-being (emotional, social, and psychological well-being). This study was significant for examining the latent profiles of the difficulties associated with the school-to-work transition made by university students preparing for employment, while also exploring their mental well-being. Based on the results of this study, practical implications, limitations, and suggestions for further study were discussed.

  • In this study, a survey was conducted of students in grades 7 through 12, student teachers enrolled in their senior year at teachers' colleges, and science teachers. Subjects were surveyed on their conceptions of phenomenon related with dissolution, saturation, and extraction. The models and analogies used by student teachers and science teachers to explain dissolution were sought. The highest percentage of students thought of dissolution as a phenomenon in which particles broke into the spaces between other particles. The models or analogies used by the highest percentage of science teachers were similar. They generally conceived of dissolution phenomenon through what we call the 'space conception'. A conception of dissolution phenomenon as 'hydration through attraction of solvent and solute' was held by more student teachers than science teachers; there were some differences, however, according to their academic background. The percentage of teachers professing this view decreased when they attempted to explain the process of extraction of matter in a solution after other matter had dissolved or after the solution was cooled, indicating that the 'hydration' conception was not firmly established in the student teachers' cognition. Therefore, it can be inferred that the conceptions of dissolution as 'hydration' were transformed into the conceptions of dissolution as 'space' after teaching dissolution phenomenon as practicing teachers. This finding should be considered in teacher-training courses.

  • Today’s teenagers were significantly deficient of calcium intakes, taking on the average only 55.4 percents of the recommended. Milk was the major source of calcium intakes, and therefore the school milk program need to be readdressed to remedy this problem. However, school milk program(SMP) was said to be simply the substitute for milk at home, so that no more than a minimal effect on total milk consumption be warranted. This Study aimed to find out whether or not the school milk program was an effective measure to increase teenager’s milk consumption and explored the relation between school milk and total milk consumption for 1,079 junior and senior high school students who were surveyed by questionnaire from 15th June to 15th July in 2006. A Tobit model was used for the statistical analysis. In this model, we first regressed milk consumption on 5 variables i.e. degree of satisfaction, participation in SMP, sex, school, region. But the variable region was not significant statistically. Then we regressed on 4 variables except for region. The results showed 4 variables were all significant and the marginal effect of variable ‘participation in SMP’ was 1.3. Especially, the marginal effect 1.3 means that the students participating in the school milk program consumed 1.3cups more than the non-participants, which indicated the effectiveness of school milk program to improve the calcium deficiency program of teenagers.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual condition of consciousness that the students in Dept. of dental hygiene who will be engaged in dental hygiene at a dental office in the future have about a clinical training, to see whether there is any difference between the results, and then to provide fundamental data which can be helpful to develop more effective clinical training programs. For this, we investigated consciousness, that 114 daytime school students and evening school students(76 daytime school students and 38 evening school students) in Dept. of dental hygiene in J college have, using questionnaires on clinical training with Self-Administrated Method. SPSS 12.0 for Windows was used to analyze all of the questionnaires, and the results analyzed at meaningful level a=.05 are like followings: 1. The degree of satisfaction on clinical training was high as average 3.30 ; it was high in case of night training as 3.34, and of a dental office in a general hospital and an university hospital as 3.83. The degree of stress caused by clinical training was high as average 3.30, and it means that they are under relatively heavy pressure ; it was shown they got the most heavy stress as 3.39 at night, as 3.68 at a dental clinic 2. The students showed the highest tendency to recognize that clinical training is needed "for learning various clinical case experiences" as average 3.54 ; the students trained at daytime showed the highest average 3.55, and at a clinical hospital, the highest average 3.64. 3. In the study on an actual condition of consciousness about clinical training according to class difference by time(at day time and at night), there is meaningful difference between two kinds of class ; the students trained at day time showed average 2.68 that they don't like to attend, on the other hand the students at night showed higher average 2.84(p<.05). In the study on an actual condition of consciousness about clinical training according to the institutions they are trained, there is meaningful difference at satisfaction on learning method and amount of assignment : they show the highest degree of satisfaction on the learning method in case of working at a dental office in a general hospital and an university hospital as average 3.3(p<.0.1) ; the amount of assignment was shown most high at a dental clinic and a dental office in a general hospital and an university hospital as average 3.00 each(p<.05). 4. In the study of the degree of satisfaction on the clinical training, it has relatively high connections with learning contents(r=.656), learning methods(r=.497), special lessons and supplementary lessons(r=.472), the case they don't like attend at work (r=-.439), discriminatory treatment(r=-.25l), respectability on the senior dental hygienists(r=.464), a social status of a dental hygienist(r=.213), the degree of satisfaction from the relationship with other dental hygienists(r=.274), the degree of understanding which clinical training institutions have on the trained students(r=.494), trainers' ability to teach the students(r=.499). enthusiasm on guiding (r=.523), the amount of assignment(r=.333). 5. In the study on stress they got from a clinical training, it has relatively high connections with learning contents(r=-.399). learning methods(r=-.536), comprehension on training program(r=-.208), special lessons and supplementary lessons(r=-.306), the case they don't like attend at work(r=.467), discriminatory treatment(r=.366), respectability on the senior dental hygienists(r=-.341), a social status of a dental hygienist(r=-.l97), the degree of satisfaction from the relationship with another dental hygienists(r=-.289), the degree of understanding which clinical training institutions have on the trained students(r=-.430), trainers' ability to teach the students(r=-.396), enthusiasm on guiding(r=-.495).
