This paper proposed semiotic model to explain representation process of time in cinema. Limitations of cinematic narratology which explain representation process of time in cinema were indicated, then alternative explanations of Deleuzian philosophy of cinema were proposed. After discussion about articulations of cinematic code, Deleuzian concept of movement-image was suggested as semiotic minimal unit of cinema. In cinema, Movement-image is divided two different aspects ; "normal movement-image" and "abnormal movement-image". Therefore, two different semiotic representation process of time was reconstructed in accordance with Peircean semiosis theory. In this two different semiotic process, modern cinema emphasize the direct representation process of time with "abnormal movement-image". As Deleuze indicated, The "time-image" is presented in this semiotic process. The "time-image" makes it possible to consider "time itself" as philosophical fact which is laid between reality and cinema, This semiotic process more emphasizes pure expressionality than representationality. Deleuzian philosophical journey through cinema was started in this point.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the elements forming interior design and to examine dimensional relationship among the elements which form space through the comparison of the spatial language and semiotics of space for the component of interior design. In addition to that it indtends to derive the principle of design which dominate interior design and the inherent diversified meaning by comparing those elements with the square of semiotic used in semiotics. Comics are a genre that convey meaning through compositional arrangements of dialogue and images as well as through the flow of panels across a page. Communicating that meaning to readers through a combination of language and visual lexicons is the essential process of drawing comics, a process that in itself is significant. The semiotics of comics is a field of scholarship grounded in the broader discipline of semiotic theory in which all the components of comics, both visual and verbal, are the subject of study and research. By adopting a semiotic approach we are able to objectively analyze and understand the symbolic, social and ideological meanings embedded in the signs and sign processes expressed in comics. The fundamental pedagogical mission of teaching comics is to cultivate human nature through the study of theory as well as through the production and completion of original works that explore new modes of expression. To go further, interpreting those embedded meanings in the context of comics fosters effective and creative skills of expression that go beyond a mere fascination for the genre itself. In short, because the semiotic approach to understanding visual communication is the essence teaching comics, we can expect that the act of reading and creating comics plays a significant role in understanding visual communication.

A semiotic approach to modem visual arts has emerged since French post-structuralism was introduced to Anglo -American academics by "deconstruction" or "postmodemi sm." It views a work of art as a sign, which is its math odical assumption and, at the same time, makes its appli cation more accessible. In the milieu of modem visual arts' effort to be intimate with general audience, modem art photography is now fared with the request to be a familar and universal domain, instead of being left only in photo books as artistic and academic achievements. More specifically, various photo images puter graphics to such megaexhibitions as "Gwangju Biennale,. "Media City Seo ul," and "Pusan International Art Festival," are main objects of study. A coherent and scientific analysis of visual semitotics is still on the way, however, it is an urgent task how to read and interpret a photo image with multiple meanings. This study argues that visual seniotics can be a powerful tool to enhance the understanding of art photography. After all, seniotics is a product of age； we live in the age of legibility, that is, of reading the work of art well as the social events and phenomena. art well as the social events and phenomena.

The purpose of this study Is to reinterpret sexuality represented in modern fashion with the conception of plural sexuality from post-structuralism in socio-semiotic approach. It consists of two parts.: The first part provides the theoretical background and the methodological framework of this study. The second part ultimately accomplishes this study by empirical research, which is to infer plural sexuality articulated with fashion images in men's and women's popular fashion magazines in Korea since 2000 and sexual ideology signified in modern fashion. In this part the theoretical background was focused on the conception of sexuality on the basis of Foucault's idea, and then the framework for this study was made up from socio-semiotic perspective. The conception of sexuality in Foucauldian post-structural idea maintains the view of plural sexuality, which floats by power relationship between dominant and oppositional discourses in a specific historical context. Socio-semiotics suggests a contextual methodology to analyze the phenomena of material culture by articulating the range of material objects with that of ideology. The socio-semiotic model applied to sexuality represented in fashion is the framework of classifying into the several versions of fashion images from fashion as a material object and then inferring sexual ideology codified in them. In addition, three stages of producer/object/user in socio-semiotics were revised into 'dominant sexuality' with mainstream fashion out of dominant discourses,'oppositional sexuality' to create anti-fashion from oppositional discourses of subculture, and 'alternative sexuality' to be appropriated to dominant discourses by the mix of mainstream fashion and anti-fashion.

This article examines China's political characteristics from a cultural perspective. First, it demonstrates the usefulness of the semiotic model through comparative analysis of various political and cultural research methods. Next, this model is used to analyze the representative religions of China, Confucianism and Taoism. Lastly, it analyzes the influence of the cultural codes derived through this on Chinese politics. In conclusion, China has a monolithic cultural code that seeks harmony with transcendental order centered on secular order. It is analyzed that the cultural code of this characteristic had an influence on the orientations of non-rationalization and realism.

Recently, the number of 'single-person household' is increasing rapidly. It brings about changes in the societal cultural aspect. Examples of television programs focused on their lifestyle provoked the societal attention as a important social agenda. This research investigated to figure out inherent ideologies in of tvN through Semiotic and Discourse analyses. As a result, predominant ideologies were revealed on the basis of representations of such single-person households. The authors also tried to find out how the media represent attitudes of single-person households and figure out how the media approach their ways of lives on bases of specific discourses and ideologies.

This study investigates students' conceptions of fractions from a measurement approach while providing a technological environment designed to support students' understanding of the relationships between quantities and adjustable units. 13 third-graders participated in this study and they were involved in a series of measurement tasks through task-based interviews. The tasks were devised to investigate the relationship between units and quantity through manipulations. Screencasting videos were collected including verbal explanations and manipulations. Drawing upon the theory of semiotic mediation, students' constructed concepts during interviews were coded as mathematical words and visual mediators to identify conceptual profiles using a fine-grained analysis. Two students changed their strategies to solve the tasks were selected as a representative case of the two profiles: from guessing to recursive partitioning; from using random units to making a relation to the given unit. Dragging mathematical objects plays a critical role to mediate and formulate fraction understandings such as unitizing and partitioning. In addition, static and dynamic representations influence the development of unit concepts in measurement situations. The findings will contribute to the field's understanding of how students come to understand the concept of fraction as measure and the role of technology, which result in a theory-driven, empirically-tested set of tasks that can be used to introduce fractions as an alternative way.

This article aims, by analyzing structurally the codification of dress sign in Korean society, the signifying system of the codes and their message communicated, to make clear a signifying structure that would be codified through the relationship between abstract concepts and real condition of dress. I used the semiotic theory of Ferdinand de Saussure′s conception on structuralismly the codification, cultural semiology of Roland Barthes and Myung-Sook Han′s formula of dress structure as tools analyse may objective of wedding dress of folks in Choson Dynasty, which has been successive our traditional Korean wedding dress. My results of the study are : The procedure of wedding ceremony in Choson Dynasty was presented in texts like Juga-garye, Sarye-peonram and Kukjo-orye, its dress system has been more emphasized on language, and aspect of social system, than parole, one of individual realization. In addition, the meanings of marrage such as "Oneness of bride and bridegroom", "Mixture of two sexes", "Blessing of good luck", were included in the signified like the style, pattern and color of the wedding dress, and specially, pattern and color, the articulated morphemes, was emphasized, When we combinated terms of dress in Choson Dynasty with syntagmatic, regarding their list as paradigmatic, it will signify a wedding dress, and according to combinating ways, it amy be divided as sign of dresses of bride and bridgeroom by sex or king, gentry and common people by class. This study focuses on semiotic significance of clothing, showed in visual mass media. This study will look into what general public understand from clothing and what influence clothing on visual mass media exert on fashion. This study employs an example, "Aein(sweetheart)", which was televised from 09/02/1996 till 10/23/1996. Some specialists(master′s degree or doctoral degree holders, or professors) of Clothing and Textile picked and analyzed scenes with specific clothing. The theoretical grounds of the analysis are 1) in what procession the significance operate from the view of mythological symbols by Bart, 2) what influences clothing on TV dramas exert on fashion. The outcomes of the study are followings: First, clothing′s signifying proces hs two dimensions; linguistic dimension and mythological dimension. Linguistic dimension which is regarded as general and unvariable and is related to the reproductive signifying operation, contributes to the creation of the characters including the characters′ social activities, professions, social or economic position. Mythological dimension which is related to the cultural and implicative signifying operation, played an important role in the development of the drama. Thus, it operates to create and deliver images including that atmosphere of he drama and the development of the story. Second, the TV media which is characterized with the form of centralized transmission and individual reception and the ability tro readily lead the fashion, has huge influence upon the fashion by properly creating mythological or linguistic dimension of the clothing in the drama, arousing the public′s sympathy, and stimulating the public′ immitation or conformity mentality.
