In micro-sized light emitting diodes, which are increasingly attentions as the light sources of displays and semiconductor lighting, increasing the amount of light and improving the luminous efficiency are very important and various development directions and methods have been proposed. In this study, the design of 3-dimensional nano structures through nano frame formation and the application of a nano pattern and a reactive etching method were proposed. And it will also be discussed that nano pillar arrays with nano cavities having improved verticality can be applied to semiconductor light sources through the development of nano frame structures.

When the laser diode is operated with continuous current, the light intensity from the laser diode deceases with time due to the temperature rise in the active layer. The phenomena, which is often called as DROOP, should be minimized in order to be used as a light source for the laser beam printer. We experimently examined the influences of the laser parameters such as threshold current, differential quantum efficiency on droop. It was found that decreasing the differential quantum efficiency of the laser diode is the effective way to minimize droop.
In this paper, an illumination optical system that can mitigate the saturation phenomenon in the center of an image (caused by the typical flexible-endoscope illumination system using LEDs with Lambertian light distribution) is designed. When an LED with Lambertian light distribution is used as a light source, the amount of light in the center of the endoscopic illumination system is relatively high, compared to the periphery, causing saturation in the image. Since this phenomenon causes difficulty in detecting the patient's lesion, it is necessary to find a lighting-system design that can alleviate the saturation phenomenon. Therefore, in this paper a lighting system with bat-wing light distribution, which can lower the intensity at the center and secure the maximum amount of light at the maximum light distribution angle, is designed. In addition, to check the performance of the designed lighting system, a simulation of illumination and luminance is conducted for a system using a common aspherical lens with otherwise the same components. As a result, it is confirmed that the lighting system designed in this paper effectively reduces the luminance value at the center and secures more luminance values at the periphery than the familiar lighting system.

In the past, display devices have undergone many changes, such as plasma TVs and LCDs, and have continued to develop. Recently, new display technologies, such as Organic Light Emitting Diode displays and Inorganic Light Emitting Diode displays, have been developed. Among them, Micro LED displays have the potential to improve performance more than LCDs and OLEDs, but a lot of effort and time are needed until the mass production technology (transfer and bonding) of Micro LED displays is developed. We have developed a new Micro LED display light source that can be produced using existing transfer and bonding process technologies to enable faster commercialization of Micro LED in the industry. This light source is TFT deposition on LED. TFT deposition on LED has the advantage of being able to produce displays using existing process technology, making early commercialization of display application products possible. In this study, we applied the Active Driving method to verify the performance of TFT deposition on LED as a display to determine its commercialization potential. Additionally, to facilitate faster application of Micro LED in the industry, we applied TFT deposition on LED to Optical Wireless Communication systems, which are widely used in application service areas such as safety/security and sensors, to verify its communication performance. The experimental results confirmed that TFT deposition on LED is not only capable of AM driving but can also be applied to OWC systems.

A water sterilization system is developed utilizing a 275 nm-wavelength LED light source equipped with a TIR lens. The system's light source is constructed by combining a 275 nm-wavelength UVC LED, known for its germicidal properties, with a TIR lens having a direction angle of 6.8 degrees. The optical simulation software 'LightTools' is employed to design and optimize the intensity of deep ultraviolet sterilizing light irradiation, its distribution, and sterilization capacity. In the inactivation experiment with E. coli, the water sterilizer system achieved a sterilization rate of 78.92 % while maintaining a water flow capacity of 50 L/min. Compared to the conventional mercury lamp light source water sterilizer system, the UVC LED water sterilizer system addresses environmental concerns related to mercury usage and offers advantages in terms of lifespan and durability.

LED is expected as an environmentally friendly light source with its good reliability and long lifetime. A few ten mW white LED can substitute for the indicator light source, and it is required to study several watt multi-chip semiconductor light sources in order to replace the light sources for general illumination such as incandescent lights and fluorescent lamps. Since the optical technology used for several mW white LED light source uses only 30% to 50% of the light, it is required to develop the design technology of optical system and lens to improve the efficiency more than 80% for insuring the high power of white LED. In this paper, we designed and fabricated new structure reflector to increase the efficiency.
Optical simulation of the rear and front panel geometries were needed to improve the luminance and efficiency in PDP cells. The 3-dimensional optical code can be used to analyze the variation of geometries and changing of optical properties. In order to improve the accuracy of simulated results, a new UV source, called a multi-cubes UV source, was designed. To design the source, at first UV distribution was calculated with the plasma fluid code and then the UV distribution was transformed to the multi-cube structures in the optical code. Compared to the results from existing UV source, called a planar UV source, could be improved the accuracy of visible light distribution. Simulated results were also compared to the visible distribution measured with the ICCD in a real PDP cell.

An irradiator is developed using two UVA wavelength ranges of SMD LEDs as a curing light source. This module has dimensions of 545×111×300 mm3 and is equipped with a TIR bar-shaped lens made of PDMS silicone resin. The developed irradiator offers high uniformity, with 89% in the centerline of the horizontal axis direction, for two different wavelength ranges of 365 nm and 385 nm. The radiation intensity from the light source module shows highly directional characteristics, and the irradiator provides a maximum irradiance of 1,634 mW/cm2 at a working distance of 50 mm. During the initial 5 minutes of operation, the irradiance experiences a rapid decrease. However, this issue is addressed by optimizing the LED's current reduction characteristics and managing the Transistor's temperature rise in the constant current circuit. After continuous operation for approximately 60 minutes. The highest temperature, near the central part of the irradiating surface, reaches 69.7℃, while the lowest temperature, near the edges, is 41.1℃.

Incoherent broadband optical sources have been applied in various areas such as a light source for optical device characterization, fiber-optic gyroscopes$^{(1)}$ , and spectrum sliced light source in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system$^{(2)}$ . To utilize the inherent low loss in silica optical fibers, various types of incoherent light sources are being developed. Among the light sources, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a rare earth doped fiber has benefits in temperature stability, high output power, low polarization dependence over semiconductor diodes$^{(3)}$ . Recently erbium doped fibers (EDF) have been intensively researched for ASE sources as well as optical amplifiers$^{(4)}$ . The spectrum of ASE from an EDF, however, is limited in the 1520~1560 nm range in conventional configurations. In this letter we described a new broadband ASE source which included both the conventional ASE band of Er$^{3+}$ ion, 1520nm~1560nm and ASE band from Tm$^{3+}$ ions that extends the bandwidth further. For the first time, to the best knowledge of authors, a fiber ASE source based on the energy transfer between Er$^{3+}$ and Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the range of 1460~1550 nm, has been demonstrated using a single 980nm pump laser diode.
