As semi-solid forging (SSF) is compared with conventional easting such as gravity die-easting and squeeze casting, the product without inner defects can be obtained from semi-solid forming and globular microstructure as well. Generally speaking. SSF consists of reheating, forging, ejecting precesses. In the reheating process, the materials are heated up to the temperature between the solidus and liquidus line at which the materials exists in the form of liquid-solid mixture. The process variables such as reheating time, reheating temperature, reheating holding time, and induction heating power have much effect on the quality of the reheated billets. It is difficult to consider all the variables at the same time when predicting the quality. In this paper, Taguchi method, regression analysis and neural network were applied to analyze the relationship between processing conditions and solid fraction. A356 alloy was used for the present study, and the learning data were extracted by the reheating experiments. Results by neural network were on good agreement with those by experiment. Polynominal regression analysis was formulated by using the test data from neural network. Optimum processing condition was calculated to minimize the grain size, solid fraction standard deviation, otherwise, to maximize the specimen temperature average. In this time, discussion is liven about reheating process of row material and results are presented with regard to accurate process variables for proper solid fraction, specimen temperature and grain size.
Recently, rheology forming technology has been interested in industrial and academic for light weight materials and to solve environmental issues. In this study, the rheology material production equipments were used to be made spiral shape by special design. And the experiment variables established stirring time 0 $\sim$ 1200 sec, stirring velocity 0 $\sim$ 100 rpm and several material temperature of semi - solid states. The rheology materials were made for established experiment conditions then measured mechanical properties. Sequence-production equipments were appended to fabrication system of rheology material for make rheology materials continually. Therefore, the development of sequence-production equipments were demanded for fine grains and for uniform globule shape rheology materials by a specially designed spiral stirrer machine.
For material characterization of semi-solid materials, backward extrusion process, which has been used in forming of hollow-sectioned products, was analyzed by the upper bound analysis in the current study. The existing kinematically admissible velocity field was applied to steady state at which there was no change in the assumed regions of velocity field. For unsteady state, new velocity field, as a function of dead zone angle, was proposed. Through the whole analysis, fiction between die and workpiece was also considered. It has been studied how the process variables, such as friction factor and punch velocity, and material parameters, such as strength coefficient, strain rate sensitivity could affect on analysis results. Finally, by the comparison with the finite element analysis, the reliability and efficiency of the proposed velocity field were discussed.
The technology of Semi-Solid Forging (SSF) has been actively developed to fabricate near-net- shape products using light and hardly formable materials, the SSF process is composed of slug heating, forming, compression holding and ejecting step. After forming step in SSF, the slug is compressed during a certain holding time in order to be completely filled in the die cavity and be accelerated in solidification rate. The compression holding time that can affect mechanical properties and shape of products is important to make decision, where it is necessary to find overall hert transfer coefficeient properly which has large effect on heat transfer between slug and die. This paper presents the procedure to predict compression holding time of octaining the final shaped part with information of temperature and solid fraction for a cylindrical slug at compression hoiding step in closed-die compression process using heat transfer analysis considering latent heat by means of finite element method. The influence of the predicted compression hoiding time on mechanical properties of products is finally investigated by experiment.
It is reported that semi-solid forming process takes many advantages over the conventional forming process, such as long die lift, good mechanical properties and energy saves. Rheology material has a thixotropic, pseudo-plastic and shear-thinning characteristic. Therefore, general plastic or fluid dynamic analysis is not suitable for the behavior of rheology material. So it is difficult for a numerical simulation of the rheology process to be performed because complicated processes such as the filling to include the state of the free surface and solidification in the phase transformation must be considered. Moreover, it is important to predict the deformation behavior for optimization of net shape forging process with semi-solid materials and to control liquid segregation for mechanical properties of materials. In this study, so, molecular dynamics simulation was performed for the control of liquid segregation in compression experiment as a part of study on analysis of rheology forming process.

Solid-state processing via the bulk mechanical alloying enables us to directly fabricate $Mg_2X$ semi-conductive material performs. Precise control of chemical composition leads to investigation on the dilution and enrichment of X in $Mg_2X$. Two types of solid-state reactivity are introduced: e.g. synthesis of $Mg_2Si$ from elemental mixture Mg-Si is nucleation-controlled process while synthesis of $Mg_2Sn$ from Mg-Sn, diffusion-controlled process. Thermoelectricity of these $Mg_2X$ is evaluated for discussion on the validity and effectiveness of this new PM route as a reliable tool for fabrication of thermoelectric compounds.
Leachate quality and methane emission from pilot-scale lysimeters operated under semi-aerobic and anaerobic conditions were monitored for 650 days. Two semi-aerobic lysimeters were filled with un-compacted and compacted municipal solid wastes whereas two anaerobic lysimeters containing compacted wastes were operated with leachate storage at 50% and 100% of waste height, respectively. Despite having high moisture in wastes and operating under tropical rainfall events, leachate stabilization in semi-aerobic lysimeters took place much faster resulting in BOD reduction by 90% within 60 days, significantly shorter than 180-210 days observed in anaerobic lysimeters. Nitrogen concentration in leachate from semi-aerobic lysimeter could be reduced by 90%. In term of gas emission, semi-aerobic lysimeter with un-compacted wastes had much lower methane emission rate of $2.8g/m^2/day$ compare to anaerobic lysimeters ($62.6g/m^2/day$) through seasonal fluctuation was observed. Nevertheless, semi-aerobic lysimeter with waste compaction has similar performance to anaerobic lysimeter.
In this study, the deformation characteristics of grain-size controlled rheology materials surfaces were investigated as a part of the research on the surface crack prediction in semi-solid formed automobile components. The microstructure of rheology Al-Si alloys consists of primary and eutectic regions. In eutectic regions the crack initiation begins with initial fracture of the eutectic silicon particles and inside other intermetallic phases. Nano-deformation characteristics in the eutectic and primary region of semi-solid aluminum alloys (356 alloy and 319 alloy) were investigated through the nanoindentation/scratch experiments and the AFM observation.
Recently, semi-solid forming (SSF) Process has been applied in many automobile parts for improved weight reduction, better environmental protection and energy savings. SSF process was well developed for high volume production of light weight aluminum components. In this paper, knuckle has been manufactured by SSF and then the microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated followed by various heat-treatment conditions. It was found that the examined microstructure was equiaxed at the whole cross-section area.
This paper describes an overview of the thixoforming and thixomolding processes. Semi-solid metalworking (SSM), which is called the thixoforming process of aluminium materials, incorporates the elements of both casting and for the manufacture of near net shape parts. The SSM has some advantages such as net shape or near net shape manufacturing, the ability to form thin walls, excellent surface finish, tight tolerance, and excellent dimensional precision. The thixomolding process of Mg alloy (AZ9l) is a combination of two technologies both conventional die casting and plastic injection molding. The feed material used is a machined chip with a geometry of approximately 1 mm square and a length of 2~3 mm. The semi-solid forming (SSF) of high quality aluminium and magnesium parts will be established in the automotive and electronic industry, in the future. The hybrid method of casting/forging has been caused attention. This process uses a preformed material made by casting instead of the wrought material and finishes it by a single forging process. This process is expected to lower costs without sacrificing the mechanical and finishes it by a single forging process. The process is expected to lower costs without sacrificing the mechanical properties. The authors, intending that the casting/forging process contributes to a reduction in production cost of aluminum automotive parts in Korea, describes the feature of the casting/forging process, aluminum alloys suitable for the cast preform, microstructure and mechanical properties of the cast preform, application examples of cast/forging, and further study.
