  • This paper describes best-practices in lifting an image metadata standard to the Semantic Web. We provide guidelines on how an XML-based metadata format can be converted into an OWL ontology. Additionally, we discuss how this ontology can be mapped to the W3C's Media Ontology. This ontology is a standardization effort of the W3C to provide a core vocabulary for multimedia annotations. The approach presented here can be applied to other XML-based metadata standards.

  • The semantic web was proposed as the next generation web technology. In the environment of the semantic web, resources as well defined and related with each other semantically, the RDF supports this basic mechanism. To establish and develop the semantic web. the basic technologies related to RDF data must be pre-established. In this research, we develop methods for storing and querying RDF data using an XML database system. As using XML database, XML data and RDF data can be integrated and efficiently managed. We construct and evaluate a system applying the proposed method to store and search data, we compared the query processing performance on our system with that of an existing system. The experiment result show that our system processes queries more efficiently.

  • As defense science and technology are developing, smart weapons are being developed continually. The collection and analysis of the future strategic weapon information from all over the world have become a greater priority because information sharing became active. So, a system to manage and analyze heterogeneous defense intelligence is required. Semantic Web is the next generation knowledge information management technology for integrating, searching and navigating heterogeneous knowledge resource. Recently, Semantic Web is wildly being used in intelligent information management system. Semantic Web supports the analysis with the high reliability because it supports the simple keyword search as well as the semantic based information retrieval. In this paper, we propose the semantic web based multi-dimensional information analysis system on the national defense weapons that constructs ontology for various weapons information such as weapon specifications, nations, manufacturers and technologies and searches and analyses the specific weapon based on ontology. The proposed system supports the semantic search and multi-dimensional information analysis based on the relations between weapon specifications. Also, our system improves the efficiency on acquiring smart weapon information because it is developed with ontology based on military experts' knowledge and various web documents related with various weapons and intelligent search service.

  • Personalized reminder systems have to identify the user's current needs dynamically and proactively based on the user's current context. However, need identification methodologies and their feasible architectures for personalized reminder systems have so far been rare. Hence, this paper aims to propose a proactive need identification mechanism by applying agent and semantic web technologies and RFID-based context subsystem for a personalized reminder system, which is one of the supporting systems for a robust ubiquitous service support environment. We have created a prototype system, RFID-based NAMA (Need Aware Multi-Agent), to demonstrate the feasibility of the methodology and of the mobile settings framework that we propose in this paper. NAMA considers the context, user profile with preferences, and information about currently available services, to discover the user's current needs and then link the user to a set of services, which are implemented as web services.

  • Since the ambitious declaration of the vision of the Semantic Web, a growing number of studies on semantic search have recently been made. However, we recognize that our community has not so much accomplished despite those efforts. We analyze two underlying problems : a lack of a shared notion of semantic search that guides current research, and a lack of a comprehensive view that envisions future work. Based on this diagnosis, we start by defining semantic search as the process of retrieving desired information in response to user's input using semantic technologies such as ontologies. Then, we propose a classification framework in order for the community to obtain the better understanding of semantic search. The proposed classification framework consists of input processing, target source, search methodology, results ranking, and output data type. Last, we apply our proposed framework to prior studies and suggest future research directions.

  • RSS is a core component of Web 2.0 which is expected to lead the most important innovation in the new IT environment. In that sense, it is actively utilized to distribute Web contents in various areas such as news, blog, multimedia, medical information, and conference and journal information. Also, it is expected to be a major effective marketing tool in electronic commerce domain. In the paper, we analyzed the problems of current utilization of RSS in domestic shopping malls, and suggest requirements for the effective use of RSS in electronic commerce. Furthermore, we proposed various issues and answers on the implementation of the requirements, and designed the intelligent RSS framework for electronic commerce based on the issues. Syntactic and semantic interoperability between the RSS service provider and the user is one of the most important issues in the framework. We suggested how to implement the interoperability based on Semantic Web technologies.

  • Recently, one of the most challenging problems is to compose web services dynamically, that is, on demand. A number of researchers have been considerably interested in the dynamic web services composition. However, while most of them focused on the semi-automatic web services composition with a human controller, very little attention was devoted to the full automation of this process. This paper primarily focuses on the automatic web services composition techniques. The main idea is to implement an automatic web services composition system using web ontologies to realize the semantic web and workflow technologies to play a major role in E-businesses. In this paper, we propose a matching algorithm for web service discovery and present an approach based on the use of ontologies to facilitate the interoperability of web services. Finally, we describe a workflow execution plan to support the automatic web services composition, and an experimental study that shows the high performance of our system.

  • Currently, XML and its schema language have become the standard for data representation and information exchange format on the current web. Unfortunately, problems happen when integrating different data sources since XML mainly supports the document structure but lack consideration on sharing knowledge of data. Meanwhile, Semantic Web technologies, such as Web Ontology Language (OWL), can include the structure as well as the semantics of the data. Therefore, finding a way to integrate XML data as OWL ontology receives a high interest nowadays. In this paper we present a mapping notation to convert XML Schema to OWL domain knowledge and an effective method to transform XML instances into OWL individuals. While keeping the XML original structure, our work also adds more semantics for the XML document. Moreover, whole of the transformation processes are done automatically without any user interference. Further, our transforming approach provides the solution for duplicate element names in XML document which has not mentioned in the previous work. Our results in existing OWL syntaxes can be loaded immediately by OWL editors and Semantic Web applications.

  • The current technological revolution pushes forward the innovation in the library information systems. This study proposes functional requirements and an architectural reference model of Semantic Library, recognized as a prototype of next-generation library information systems, that is a seamless convergence of the library information systems and the Internet technologies. Semantic Library can realize semantic interoperability and integration based on ontology and metadata, and also renovate information services for users with openness, sharing, participation and collaboration. Semantic Library will be effectively implemented by means of service-oriented architecture and the logical structure of FRBR. In this study, a reference model of Semantic Library consisting of 6 horizontal layers and 3 vertical elements is presented as a next-generation model of library information systems.
