Purpose: This study was conducted to determine if women's depression is influenced by their self esteem, stress, and social support. Methods: This study was a descriptive survey, and data were collected from the November 1 to December 20, 2015 using a self-reported questionnaire. The measurements were SES for self esteem, and CES-D for depression. A total of 165 middle-aged women participated through convenient sampling. Results: There were significant difference in self-esteem according to education level and monthly income. Additionally, there was an inverse correlation between stress and self esteem, as well as a significant strong correlation between self esteem, stress, social support and depression. Finally, multiple regression showed that self-esteem and stress had significant effects on depression, and their explanatory power was ${\Delta}R2(%)=47.9$ (${\Delta}F=66.526$, p<.001), p<.001). Conclusion: This study confirmed that depression was closely related to self-esteem and stress among middle-aged women. Based on these findings, we suggest that the health policies of reducing depression for middle-aged women should focus on reducing stress and reinforcing their self-esteem.
A number of nursing researchers have used the concept of health locus of control over the past decade in Korea. This article reviewed 92 nursing research papers on health locus of control conducted since 1982, and examined type of subjects, design, measurement instruments, the scores of each dimension of the HLOC, and significant variables. Most of the research were correlational in design, used an 18-item 6-point score instrument and studied the relationship between HLOC, health re-lated variables, and cognitive-emotional variables, The health related variables included health behavior, health management, preventive health behavior, compliance to treatment regimen and self care behavior The cognitive-emotional variables included depression, anxiety, stress and self- esteem. Some consistent findings are beginning to emerge. The concept of internal HLOC was positively correlated with the health related variables. But few studies found any significant correlation between powerful others HLOC and health related variables. In the case of chance HLOC, few studies reported a significant relationship. Many of the articles reported significant relationships between internal HLOC and cognitive-emotional variables, but few reported a significant relationship between powerful others or chance HLOC and cognitive -emotional variables. all experimental studies but one found that only internal HLOC was significantly changed following experimental manipulation. When the different groups of subjects such as normal persons, chronic patients, acute patients were compared in terms of mean scores, it was found that the HLOC appeared to change depending on the status of the patients. Recommendations for future research include modification of the instrument to increase the reliability and validity, study about the pattern of response suggested by Wallston and Wallston(1982) and further experimental study on changing the belief of subjects to internal HLOC.
Objectives: This study examined the trends in gender disparity in the self-rated health of people aged 25 to 64 in South Korea, a rapidly changing society, with specific attention to socio-structural inequality. Methods: Representative sample data were obtained from six successive, nationwide Social Statistics Surveys of the Korean National Statistical Office performed during 1992 to 2010. Results: The results showed a convergent trend in poor self-rated health between genders since 1992, with a sharper decline in gender disparity observed in younger adults (aged 25 to 44) than in older adults (aged 45 to 64). The diminishing gender gap seemed to be attributable to an increase in women;s educational attainment levels and to their higher status in the labor market. Conclusions: The study indicated the importance of equitable social opportunities for both genders for understanding the historical trends in the gender gap in the self-reported health data from South Korea.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the mediating effects of health concern and depression on the stress and fatigue of COVID-19 self-quarantine. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 227 people with COVID-19 self-quarantine experience were recruited during May 2021. Participants were invited to complete self-reported questionnaires that measure stress, health concern, depression, fatigue and demographic information. The data obtained were analyzed using multiple regression and dual mediation model applying the PROCESS macro with 95% bias-corrected bootstrap confidence interval. Results: This study analyzed the direct effects of COVID-19 stress on the health concern, depression and fatigue. And COVID-19 stress had indirect effects on their fatigue via health concern and depression. Both health concern and depression had dual mediating effects in the influence of COVID-19 stress on fatigue. In the relationship between COVID-19 stress and fatigue, the mediating effect of depression was significant. Conclusion: Fatigue due to prolonged COVID-19 can be alleviated by managing stress and mediating health concern and depression, and so therefore active nursing intervention is required.
Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the effect of powered toothbrush with a wireless remote display on the subjective and objective oral hygiene improvement. Methods: One hundred and fifteen subjects in healthy or mild gingivitis status between the ages of 20 and 90 were recruited and reviewed for study inclusion criteria. At first visit, 115 pre-screened subjects filled in the questionnaire form which consisted of demographic factors, behavioral factors (smoking, alcohol consumption), toothbrushing habits (brushing time and frequency), self-reported oral health status, and self-satisfaction. Baseline clinical indices (Plaque index, Gingival index) were also recorded by a periodontist. Subjects were instructed how to use powered toothbrush with a wireless remote display, and were provided with it. Thirty days after first visit, 90 subjects returned for the second assessment by self-reported questionnaire form and professional clinical checkup. Statistical analysis was performed using paired t-test for the difference between baseline and second visit data. The relationship among variables was examined with chi-square test and Fisher' s exact test. Results: Significant differences were not found on self-reported satisfaction related with sex, smoking, alcohol consumption (P<0.05). Self-reported tooth brushing habit was improved in the aspect of brushing time and frequency. Significant differences were found on the self-reported oral health status, self-satisfaction, and clinical indices between the baseline and second visit data (P<0.01). Clinical indices were significantly reduced after using powered toothbrush with a wireless remote display (P<0.01). No adverse reactions were reported during the study period. Conclusions: Powered toothbrush with a wireless remote display successfully promoted oral hygiene from the subjective and objective viewpoint after 30 days of home usage.
Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of intergenerational social support exchange (providing social support, receiving social support) and self-efficacy on the level of depression among elderly women. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used. The participants were 247 elderly women, over 60, living in Seoul. Data were collected by convenience sampling using self-reported questionnaires that consisted of items on general characteristics, depression, intergenerational social support exchange and self-efficacy. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation, and multiple regression. Results: Self-efficacy had the greatest impact on the level of depression among elderly women, followed by perceived health status and providing social support toward adult children. The model explained 39% of the variance. Conclusion: Results of the study suggest that as a way to prevent depression, the health administration needs to develop programs to enhance self-efficacy and to promote the supportive role of elderly women within the family.
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to examine relationships among academic stress and academic self-efficacy on positive psychological capital and identify the factors that influence on positive psychological capital in the nursing students. Methods. The data were collected from 184 nursing students in the five colleges located Y and S city using self-reported questionnaires and Oct. 25 2020 to Nov. 5 2020. The result of positive psychological capital was found to be in a significant positive correlated with academic self-efficacy. the multiple regression indicates the Major satisfaction and academic self-efficacy 22.1%(F=11.4 P<.001) of positive psychological capital. Conclusions. Therefore, it is necessary to develop academic self-efficacy increase education program for strategy positive psychological capital in nursing students.
This descriptive correlational study was conducted to identify the variables related to a health promoting behavior in nursing students. 238 nursing students were selected by a convenience sampling method. The data were collected by self - reported questionnaires from 12 to November 19, 2001. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, pearson correlation coefficient, stepwise multiple regression with an SPSS program. The result of this study were as follows: 1. The average score of health promoting behavior was 2.47(SD=0.36)of a 4 point scale. Self actualization (mean=2.94, SD=0.50), interpersonal support (mean=2.91, SD=0.53), stress management(mean=2.58, SD=0.48), health responsibility(mean=2.07, SD=0.48)) nutrition & exercise(mean=2.07, SD=0.48)) were also analyzed. 2. Health promoting behavior showed significant positive correlations with selfesteem(r=0.446, p<0.001) perceived health status(r=0.180, p<0.01), perceived benefits (r=0.183. p<0.01). self-efficacy(r=0.311, p<0.001), social support(r=0.447, p<0.001), control(r=0.169, p<0.01). 3. The combination of self-esteem, social support, affect related to action explained $38.0\%$ of the variance in health promoting behavior. On the basis of the above findings. self-esteem and social support were identified as the variables which explained most of Pender's health promoting model. Nursing strategies enhancing self-esteem and social support which have a more significant effect on health promoting lifestyles should be developed.
Purpose: This study was designed to construct a predictive model to explain quality of life of stomach cancer patients with gastrectomy. Methods: Data were collected from July 10 to August 30, 2013 through survey using self-reported questionnaires. A total of 218 patients with gastrectomy was recruited from three different hospitals. Outcome variables were exogenous ones (self efficacy and social support) and endogenous ones (depression, perceived health status, self care behavior, and quality of life). Results: Goodness-of-fit of the hypothetical model was $x^2=143.37$, RMSEA=.07 CFI=.95, TLI=.93 SRMR=.05. Self care behavior, depression and perceived health status had significant direct effects on quality of life. Self efficacy and social support were affected quality of life indirectly. These variables explained 67.9% of total variance of quality of life, and self-care behavior was the most influential factor for quality of life. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggested that self care behavior must be considered as an intervention strategy to improve quality of life. Also a development of a specific intervention program to promote self efficacy and control depression for patients with gastrectomy is essential to facilitate their self care behaviors.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify levels of perceived stigma, self-esteem, quality of life and factors influencing on quality of life in people with Hansens' disease. Methods: The subjects were 128 people in Sorokdo National Hospital, two nursing homes, and three settlements. The stigma scale, self-esteem scale, and World Health Organization's quality of life instrument were used. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires from July to August, 2010 and analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Ducan's multiple range test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression by SAS. Results: The level of perceived stigma was 3.93, self-esteem was 26.2, quality of life was 2.78. Self-esteem was positively associated with quality of life. Through the multiple regression, it was found that self-esteem and job were factors influencing of quality of life with 43% of predictability. Conclusion: It was found that self-esteem and job were important for people with Hansen's disease. To improve the quality of life in people with Hansen's disease, it is necessary to develop nursing interventions fostering self-esteem and decreasing perceived stigma.
