  • Dense composites of titanium matrix and Al2O3 matrix with reinforcements of carbon or titanium carbide fibers were successfully fabricated by high-pressure self-combustion sintering method or combustion reacton under 30 MPa of uniaxial pressure with an aid of external heating in vaccum. It was found that the fibers were uniformly distributed in the matrix, and aligned in a phase perpendicular to the pressure axis. As a moel ratio of Ti/C or reaction time increased, the density of Ti-matrix composite increased Micro pores around fibers could be removed by using clean carbon fibers without sizing agent on their surface. The evolution of carbide fibers from carbon fibers was observed. The composition of the various phases around fibers were analyzed.

  • Intermetallic Ti-Si system ceramics were synthesized from stochiometric mixtures of titanium and silicone powders in vacuum by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis(SHS). In each cases of Ti5Si3, Ti5Si4 and TiSi, and TiSi2 synthesis, 20wt% product dilution, direct ignition and SHS chemical furnace method were employed. The combustion modes, which were observed during the synthesis process by using the high speed camera, of Ti5Si3, Ti5Si4, TiSi, and TiSi2 exhibit spin, osciallatory, steady-state, and spin combustion, respectively. With increasing Ti/Si molar ratio an decrease of combustion velocities was found. From the results on the measurement of the flexural strength, the specimen hot pressed at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 min using synthesized Ti5Si4 powders showed the highest flexural strength at 215 MPa.

  • Titanium nitride was synthesized by reacting Ti powder with nitrogen gas using SHS method. In this process, the effects of nitrogen pressure, dilution with TiN, or additiion of titanium hydride(TiH1.924) on the conversion of Ti to TiN were investigated. In particular, much effects were given to solve the problem of the conversion drop due to partial melting and subsequent sintering of Ti parciels, by controlling combustion temperature and combustion wave velocity via mixing Ti powder with TiN or/and TiH1.924. For the diluted titanium powders with TiN, the conversion close to 100% was resulted when the nitrogen pressure was over 8atm and with diluent content of 60wt%, and the self-propagating reaction was not sustained when the diluent content was higher than 60wt%. For samples mixed to be 55wt% in Ti component in the mixture of Ti, TiH1.924, and 45% TiN, the conversion was closed to 100% when the amount of titanium hydride added was over 7wt% and the nitrogen pressure was higher than 5atm. The combustion reaction, however, was not sustained when titanium hydride added was more than 10wt%.

  • The $Al_2$$O_3$-SiC composite powder was prepared by Self-propagating High-Temperature Synthesis(SHS) process using $SiO_2$Al and C powders as raw material. The effects of the molar ratio in raw material, compaction pressure, initial temperature of reactants on the products and combustion process were studied. Self-propagating high temperature synthesis of $SiO_2$/Al/C system should be preheated above $400^{\circ}C$ owing to the low combustion temperature. As the result of the combustion reaction, the purity of final product became better than that of reactants. In this system, the optimum molar ratio of $SiO_2$:Al:C was 3.0:4.0:6.0. The free carbon was removed by roasting at $650^{\circ}C$ for 30min. In this study, pressureless sintering was very dffective both for controlling the disintegration of specimen with powder bed and for obtaining dense sintered-body at $1700^{\circ}C$. The sintered-body produced with hot-pressing was about 98% of the theoretical relative density.

  • Calcined clay granules (pellet) have been used as a soil conditioner. The space among the pellets can secure drainage of water in soil and, simultaneously, can keep water for plants in the inner pore of that. However, the usage of the pellet has been restrained because fabrication of that requires a high energy and cost for heating over the temperate of $1000^{\circ}C$. Recently, SCS(Self-propagating Combustion and Sintering) method was developed and this method use the combustion energy of the preliminary mixed combustible. The SCS method is suitable to fabrication of small porous aggregate and requires a very low cost. This research applied the SCS method to coal refuses for fabrication of soil conditioner pellets. The coal refuses were pulverized under the size of $100{\mu}m$ and the pulverized powders were pelletized to the size of 4~6mm. The pellets were heated at the temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$ in the SCS furnace that was specially prepared for this research. Characteristics of the pellets were investigated and were compared with that of ordinary calcined clay pellet of kaolin; porosity, pore size distribution, bulk density, pH and etc.. Characteristics of the moisture retention in the pellets were measured by the centrifugal method: ASTM D425-88. The pellets of the coal refuses showed the higher values of the field capacity and the plant-available water than that of kaolin pellet. These results suggest the very low cost process that can utilize the coal refuses and can fabricate the lightweight porous soil conditioner of the very high plant-available water.

  • ZrB2 powders were prepared from a mixture of ZrO2, B2O3 and Mg by self-propagating high temperature synthesis method. The combustion product was successfully obtained from a mixture of ZrO2:B2O3:Mg=1:2:8.5 molar ratio. By-product, MgO was effectively removed by leaching with 1M HCl solution at 9$0^{\circ}C$ for over 5hours. After leaching, the Mg content was 0.86~1.42 wt%, and the mean particle size was 4.72${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The addition of 7.5 wt%(14Ni:1.0C) as a sintering aid greatly densified ZrB2 bodies compared with that of only Ni. The ZrB2 sintered bodies containing 7.5 wt%(14Ni:1.0C) was 94.3% of the theoretical density. In this case, ZrB2 existed as a major phase and had a bend strength of 300 MPa and a vickers hardness of 2000 kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$.

  • Cu-$TiB_2$ nanocomposite powders were synthesized by combining high-energy ball-milling of Cu-Ti-B mixtures and subsequent self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS). Cu-40wt.%$TiB_2$ powders were produced by SHS reaction and ball-milled. The milled SHS powder was mixed with Cu powders by ball milling to produce Cu-2.5wt.%$TiB_2$ composites. $TiB_2$ particles less than 250nm were formed in the copper matrix after SHS-reaction. The releative density, electrical conductivity and hardness of specimens sintered at $650-750^{\circ}C$ were nearly 98%, 83%IACS and 71HRB, respectively. After heat treatment at 850 to $950^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours under Ar atmosphere, hardness was descedned by 15%. Our Cu-$TiB_2$ composite showed good thermal stability at eleveated temperature.
