  • A self-bearing is an electric machine that achieves both rotational actuation and magnetic levitation using a single magnetic structure. To be able to stably levitate the rotor in a self-bearing, one needs to have an inverse of the force-current model. However, the force-current model in a self-bearing motor is typically not square. Furthermore, the elements of the matrix vary with respect to the rotational angle, resulting in singularities of the pseudo-inverse at various angles. In this paper, we propose a new force-current model that eliminates the singularities by adding a constraint in coil currents. This constraint eliminates the flux density in the stator core so that the saturation problem in the previous study is avoided. By implementing this force-current model, we are able to implement a levitation controller for a toroidally-wound self-bearing BLDC motor. The model inversion and levitation are validated experimentally.

  • The BLDC motor is used widely in industry due to its controllability and freedom from maintenance because there is no mechanical brush in the BLDC motor. Furthermore, it is suitable for high-speed applications, such as compressors and air blowers. For instance, for a compressor with a small impeller due to miniaturizing, the BLDC motor has to rotate at a very high speed to maintain the compression ratio of the compressor. Typically, to reach an ultra-high speed, airfoil bearings must be used in place of ball bearings because of their friction. Unfortunately, the characteristics of airfoil bearings change drastically depending on the revolution speed. In this paper, a BLDC motor with airfoil bearings is controlled with a PID controller. To analyze and determine the PID coefficients, the relay-feedback method is used. Additionally, for adaptive control, a fuzzy logic controller is used. Furthermore, the auto-tuning and self-tuning techniques are combined to control the BLDC motor. The proposed method is able to control the airfoil-bearing BLDC motor efficiently.

  • In order to apply into a compact and reliable centrifugal blood pump, this paper introduces a self-bearing motor in which a rotor is rotated without contact. The rotor is actively controlled in only radial directions, while the axial and tilting motions are passively stable owing to the disk-shape structure of the rotor. A prototype was made in outer-rotor type that is far better in the compactness than inner-rotor type. The prototype could be driven up to 8000 rpm with the rotor vibration under 0.12mm. The maximum cardiac output and pressure head were 9 L/min and over 200 mmHg, respectively. These experimental results show that the proposed self-bearing motor has sufficient performance for application to a real blood pump.

  • In this paper, an angular self-sensing algorithm is proposed and implemented to a Lorentz force type integrated motor-bearing system. It is based on the principle that the flux linkages of stator windings, calculated from the voltage and torque control current, are the functions of the rotor angle. The tracking angular position error is proven to vanish using the Lyapunov stability method, and the experimental results show that the initial error decays within about 5 seconds. It is found that the resolution of the algorithm remains about 1º over the speed range of 100 to 1000 rpm.

  • The dynamic performance analyses and tests for a 50kW turbo-generator (KIMM-TG50) were carried out. The operating concept of this machine is that it gets the initial driving force from the built-in motor-generator until it reaches its self-sustaining speed of 40,000 rpm, and then the driving mode is changed to self-operating mode by the combustor installed between the centrifugal compressor and the turbine. Due to winding mistake of motor-generator, the system could go only up to 22000 rpm by the motor so that high pressure air externally fed into the turbine was utilized to get the system to run up to 62,000 rpm thereafter. The vibration data collected during the tests revealed that the first bending critical speed is in near 5,600 rpm as predicted in the design stage of the rotor-bearing system, and that there were no other identifiable critical speeds up until 62,000 rpm due to high damping from the squeeze film damper-bearings supporting the rotor. This paper presented some of the experimental results along with dynamic performance predictions made in the design stage as a part of progress being made.

  • Specially designed grooved journal bearings are installed in the main coolant pump for SMART (System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor) to support radial load on the rotating shaft. The canned motor type main coolant pumps are arranged vertically on the reactor vessel and filled with circulating primary coolant which is pure water. The main coolant pump bearings are lubricated with this coolant without any other external lubricant supply. Because lubricating condition is too severe for this bearing to generate proper hydrodynamic film, investigation of lubrication characteristics of the journal bearing is important to satisfy life constraint of whole pump system, and the results will be applied to the analysis of dynamic characteristics of the shaft system. The bearing is made of silicon graphite which has self$.$lubricating effect. A lubrication analysis method is proposed for this vertically grooved journal bearing in the main coolant pump of SMART, and lubricational characteristics of the bearings are examined in this paper.

  • This paper suggests a new linear motor which is able to levitate as well as move its mover without any linear bearing or even additive windings. Its structure is very similar to a well-known both-sided linear motor which consists of two stators and a common mover. And the movement principle is the same with that of conventional linear motor. But unlike the conventional one, the amplitudes of phase currents are controlled to levitate the mover. In this paper, the structure and principle of the suggested bearingless linear motor are introduced in detail and its feasibility is experimentally investigated. Using the prototype and a very simple controller, we succeeded in the levitation and linear movement of the mover at a time.

  • This paper presents characteristic analysis of underwater bearing for canned type electric water pump. Characteristic analysis of underwater bearing was performed using self-developed performance tester, which capable of torque change, noise change, motor speed change and abrasion loss test with respect to temperature change of underwater bearing. The performance tester can be monitored in real time by designing the control unit using the Labview program. The performance experiment was performed through comparison of the silicon carbide (SIC) and the carbon bearing. From the experiment results, performance of SIC bearing was better than carbon bearing at the abrasion and temperature experiment.

  • In the paper, the prototype development of a 75kW class microturbine for the distributed generation market is partly presented which has continued with the government funding. In the introduction, an overview of the development of microturbines in the world is presented. A series of development procedures are shown with design, manufacture and self-sustaining tests. During the first year, aerodynamic and structural design/analysis, mechanical design are performed for the compressor, the turbine and the combustor. A premixed lean burn combustor technology is used fur the low emission requirements. Foil air bearings and high-speed motors are employed for higher reliability. The self-sustaining conditions have been successfully achieved with the prototype manufactured engine as a preceding operation.
