Self healing systems are considered as cognation-enabled sub form of fault tolerance system. But our experiments that we report in this paper show that self healing systems can be used for performance optimization, configuration management, access control management and bunch of other functions. The exponential complexity that results from interaction between autonomic systems and users (software and human users) has hindered the deployment and user of intelligent systems for a while now. We show that if that exceptional complexity is converted into self-growing knowledge (policies in our case), can make up for initial development cost of building an intelligent system. In this paper, we report the application of AHSEN (Autonomic Healing-based Self management Engine) to in OKKAM Project infrastructure backbone cluster that mimics the web service based architecture of u-Zone gateway infrastructure. The 'blind' load division on per-request bases is not optimal for distributed and performance hungry infrastructure such as OKKAM. The approach adopted assesses the active threads on the virtual machine and does resource estimates for active processes. The availability of a certain server is represented through worker modules at load server. Our simulation results on the OKKAM infrastructure show that the self healing significantly improves the performance and clearly demarcates the logical ambiguities in contemporary designs of self healing infrastructures proposed for large scale computing infrastructures.

The paper proposes a distributed control self-healing algorithm for a line failure to improve the restoration time. This proposed self-healing algorithm acquired the fast restoration time by reducing the number of control messages and the queueing delay. And the reduction of queueing delay was attained by the ASC_NULL(Available Spare Channel_NULL) message which informs neighbor nodes that a source node has no available spare channel to reduce the waste of time during the rerouting. It is difficult for this proposed self-healing algorithm to be compared with other self-healing algorithms, because each self-healing algorithm has different simulation conditions. So, the performance of the proposed self-healing algorithm was compared with only NETRATS(NETwork Restoration Algorithm for Telecommunication Systems). The results of the simulation showed that the proposed self-healing algorithm was better than NETRATS in the restoration time.
A probabilistic micromechanical framework is proposed to quantify numerically the self-healing capabilities of polymers containing microcapsules. A two-step self-healing process is designed in this study: A probabilistic micromechanical framework based on the ensemble volume-averaging method is derived for the polymers, and a hitting probability model combined with a crack nucleation model is then utilized for encountering microcapsules and microcracks. Using this framework, a series of parametric investigations are performed to examine the influence of various model parameters (e.g., the volume fraction of microcapsules, microcapsule radius, radius ratio of microcracks to microcapsules, microcrack aspect ratio, and scale parameter) on the self-healing capabilities of the polymers. The proposed framework is also implemented into a finite element code to solve the self-healing behavior of tapered double cantilever beam specimens.
This paper presents a novel concept of healing some of the damages in wind turbine blades (WTBs) such as cracks and delamination. This is achieved through an inherent functioning autonomous repairing system. Such wind turbine blades have the benefit of reduced maintenance cost and increased operational period. Previous techniques of developing autonomous healing systems uses hollow glass fibres (HGFs) to deliver repairing fluids to damaged sites. HGFs have been reported with some limitations like, failure to fracture, which undermines their further usage. The self-healing technique described in this paper represents an advancement in the engineering of the delivery mechanism of a self-healing system. It is analogous to the HGF system but without the HGFs, which are replaced by multiple hollow channels created within the composite, inherently in the FRP matrix at fabrication. An in-house fabricated NACA 4412 WTB incorporating this array of network hollow channels was damaged in flexure and then autonomously repaired using the vascular channels. The blade was re-tested under flexure to ascertain the efficiency of the recovered mechanical properties.

Although the web is becoming a widely accepted medium, it provides relatively poor performance and low availability. A cluster consists of a collection of interconnected stand-alone computers working together and provides a high-availability solution in application area such as web services or information systems. Web server clusters require a high-availability service with a proactive and practical fault management. However, as the system complexity grows, it is not easy to meet the requirement. Therefore, web server clusters must have self-fault management capability for meeting high-availability requirement. In this paper, we propose high availability web server clusters using self-healing technique with a minimal human intervention. Our experimental results show that a proposed method can be used to improve the availability of web server clusters.
This paper investigates the possibility of a strategy for an automatic full recover of a structural component undergoing loading-unloading (fatigue) cycles: full recover means here that no replacement is required at the end of the mission. The goal is to obtain a material capable of self healing earlier before the damage becomes irreversible. Attention is focused on metallic materials, and in particular on shape memory alloys, for which the recovering policy just relies on thermal treatments. The results of several fatigue tests are first reported to acquire a deep understanding of the physical process. Then, for cycles of constant amplitude, the self-healing objective is achieved by mounting, on the structural component of interest, a suitable microcontroller. Its input, from suitable sensors, covers the current stress and strain in the alloy. The microcontroller elaborates from the input the value of a decisional parameter and activates the thermal process when a threshold is overcome.

In this study, constant head water permeability test was adopted to evaluate self-healing performance of mortars containing inorganic healing materials which consist of blast furnace slag, sodium sulfate and anhydrite. Clinker powder and sand replaced for a part of cement and fine aggregates. On constant head water permeability test for self-healing mortars, unit water flow rate of mortar specimens were measured according to crack width and healing period. As a result of evaluating the healing performance of self-healing mortar, it was confirmed that with the initial crack width of 0.3mm, the healing rate at healing period of 28 days increased by more than 30%p compared to plain mortar, greatly improving the healing performance. Furthermore, the coefficient(α) which was estimated from the relationship between crack width and unit water flow rate was used for calculating equivalent crack width. By analyzing the correlation of healing rate and equivalent crack width, the time and initial crack width attaining healing target crack width were predicted.

This paper describes SON(: Self Organization Network) technology in LTE networks. The SON is a unique feature of LTE compared to previous cellular systems such as UMTS and GSM, and it is a tool that effectively derives the best performance in the time-varying wireless radio environment. Also, the SON has the ability for the operator to automate the setting of the network, allowing for centralized planning and reducing the need for manual work. The SON is largely divided into three categories: Self-Configuration, Self-Optimization, and Self-Healing. Each large categories has a detailed description of technology, and the technologies in each categories are gathered to complete the technology called the SON. In this paper, we focus on MRO which is one of the Self-Optimization technique in each of the three categories.

This paper deals with the analysis of SON (Self Organization Network) technology in LTE networks. SON is a unique LTE feature compared to previous cellular systems UMTS and GSM, and is a cost-effective tool for achieving the best performance in a changing environment. In addition, SON has the function of automating the settings of the network, enabling centralized planning and reducing the need for manual tasks. SON is largely divided into three categories: Self-Configuration, Self-Optimization, and Self-Healing. Each large category has a detailed description, and all the technologies in each category come together to complete the technology called SON. In this paper, we analyzed intensively about ANR among the techniques of Self-Configuration in each of the three categories.
Home service networked systems require a high-availability service with a proactive and practical fault management. However, as the system complexity grows, it is not easy to meet the requirement. Moreover, user may want to pay no attention to a sequence of complex or nervous maintenance jobs for system fault managements. Therefore, the home service networked systems must have self & remote fault management capability with a minimal human intervention for meeting high-availability requirement of the integrated systems that consist of the networked appliances or devices. In this paper, we present an autonomic healing utility equipped with a remote self-managing mechanism in order to both increase the availability of home service networked systems and decrease the maintenance cost.
