  • Multicarrier direct sequence code division multiple access (MC DS-CDMA) is an attractive technique for achieving high data rate transmission. This is valid regardless of whether or not the potentially large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is an important factor for its application. On the other hand, code select CDMA (CS-CDMA) is an attractive technique with constant amplitude transmission of multicode signal regardless of subchannels. This is achieved by introducing a code select method. In this paper, we propose a new multiple access scheme based on the combination of MC DS-CDMA and CS-CDMA. The proposed scheme, which we call MC CS-CDMA, includes as special cases the subclasses of MC DS-CDMA and CS-CDMA. This paper investigates the performance of these systems over a multipath frequency selective fading channel using a RAKE receiver with maximal ratio combiner. In addition, the PAPR of the proposed system is compared with that of both MC DS-CDMA and CS-CDMA. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed system provides better PAPR reduction than MC DS-CDMA, at the expense of the complexity of the receiver and the number of available users. The numerical result demonstrates that the proposed system has better performance than MC DS-CDMA due to the increased processing gain and time diversity gain.

  • The current three-stage cold extrusion process including upsetting to produce a flange is investigated for the purpose of improvement of manufacturing process. The main goal of this study is to obtain an appropriate process sequence which can produce the required part most economically without overloading of tools and select an appropriate process for reducing manufacturing cost. The current process sequence is simulated and design criteria are examined. Based on the results of simulation of the current three-stage process, a design strategy for improving the process sequence is developed using the thick-wall pipes. Based on the results of simulation of the one-stage processes, the forming processes of a flange for improving the conventional process are proposed.

  • In this paper, we propose a new 3D coding method for heterogeneous systems over enhanced Access Grid (e-AG) with 3D display using spatio-temporal scalability. The proposed encoder produces four bit-streams: one base layer and enhancement layer l, 2 and 3. The base layer represents a video sequence for left eye with lower spatial resolution. An enhancement layer l provides additional bit-stream needed for reproduction of frames produced in base layer with full resolution. Similarly, the enhancement layer 2 represents a video sequence for right eye with lower spatial resolution and an enhancement layer 3 provides additional bit-stream needed for reproduction of its reference pictures with full resolution. In this system, temporal resolution reduction is obtained by dropping B-frames in the receiver according to network condition. The receiver system can select the spatial and temporal resolution of video sequence with its display condition by properly combining bit-streams.

  • A rapid and sensitive assay for specific detection and identification of barley yellow mosaic virus(BaYMV) was set up using the reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). A couple of primers was select to discriminate the viruses. PCR fragments of BaYMV(ca.0.9 kb) were obtained by using the method designed for BaYMV capsid protein. RT-PCR fragments were cloned with vector pT7 Blue and the resulting clones were sequenced. Capsid protein of BaYMV consisted of 297 amino acids and 891 nucleotides. The capsid protein sequence of BaYMV showed that 98% of nucleotides and 99% of amino acids homology.

  • Although assembly sequence planning is an essential task in assembly process planning, it is known as one of the most difficult and time consuming jobs because its complexity is increased geometrically when the number of parts in an assembly is increased. The purpose of this study is to develop a more efficient algorithm for generating assembly sequences automatically. By considering subassemblies, a new heuristic method generates a preferred parallel assembly sequence that can be used in robotic assembly systems. A parallel assembly sequence concept provides a new representation scheme for an assembly in which the assembly sequence precedence information is not required. After an user inputs both the directional mating relation information and the mating condition information, an assembly product is divided into subgroups if the product has cut-vertices. Then, a virtual disassembly process is executed to generate alternate parallel assembly sequences with intermediate assembly stability. Through searching parts relations in the virtual disassembly process, stable subassemblies are extracted from translation-free parts along disassembling directions and this extraction continues until no more subassemblies are existed. Also, the arithmetic mean parallelism formula as a preference criterion is adapted to select the best parallel assembly sequence among others. Finally a preferred parallel assembly sequence is converted to an assembly BOM structure. The results from this study can be utilized for developing CAAPP(Computer-Aided Assembly Process Planning) systems as an efficient assembly sequence planning algorithm.

  • Accessing and searching in a sequence of numbers are fundamental operations in computing that are encountered in a wide range of applications. One of the applications of the problem is cryptanalytic time-memory tradeoff which is aimed at a one-way function. A rainbow table, which is a common method for the time-memory tradeoff, contains elements from an input domain of a hash function that are normally sorted integers. In this paper, we present a practical indexing method for a monotonically increasing static sequence of numbers where the access and search queries can be addressed efficiently in terms of both time and space complexity. For a sequence of n numbers from a universe $U=\{0,{\ldots},m-1\}$, our data structure requires n lg(m/n) + O(n) bits with constant average running time for both access and search queries. We also give an analysis of the time and space complexities of the data structure, supported by experiments with rainbow tables.

  • Star formation activities dominate the evolution of galaxies. Elliptical galaxies are believed to be old galaxies in the Hubble sequence, and elliptical galaxies at different evolution epochs might have different star formation activities and/or morphologies. We investigate the connection between star formation rates and the morphology of elliptical galaxies. With the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Galaxy Zoo, we select a sample of elliptical galaxies by morphology and consider their infrared emission as an index of star formation rate to study the relation between the star formation rates and their morphological properties, such as ellipticities. In addition, we select some nearby spiral galaxies with very low MIR emission to probe the mechanisms of these red spiral galaxies. We display our preliminary results and discuss their implication on the evolution of galaxies in this poster.

  • This paper addresses the problem of placing tools in a tool magazine with random-select capability on a flexible machine. The tool placement problem could be a significant portion of the total processing time. It is assumed that the total number of tools required to process a set of parts exceeds the available magazine capacity, and so tool switches may occur between two adjacent parts in a given part sequence. Two heuristics are presented so as to minimize the total travel distance of the tool magazine before the completion of all parts.

  • Babesia equi ema-1 5' intergenic(IG) nucleotide was PCR amplified and analyzed for restriction sites in order to identify a promoter region in this IG nucleotide sequence. B equi ema-1 5' IG specific primers identified a 1268 bp PCR product. The sequence had restriction sites for 34 restriction enzymes when analyzed by a computer program. Among them, 26 enzymes had only one restriction site, but the others had more than one sites. When four restriction enzymes (Bgll , HindⅢ, Kpn1 and BamH1) were treated to digest the 1268 bp nucleotide, they had restriction sites as expected by the computer program. Information of restriction sites in the 1268 bp IG nucleotide will be applied to select restriction enzymes for cloning the IG nucleotide to a vector.

  • The correction of image artifacts due to misadjustment in tuning of RF coils (tip angle) and in the RF single sideband spectrometer was investigated using phase cycling of the $\pi$/2 and $\pi$ pulses in spin-echo sequences. A general procedure was developed for the systematic design of phase cycles that select desirable coherence transfer pathways. To analyze a phase cycling sequence, changes in the coherence level and phase factor for each RF pulse in the spin-echo cycle must be determined. Four different phase cycling schemes (FIXED, ALTERNATE, FORWARD, REVERSED) to suppress unwanted signal components such as mirror and ghost images were evaluated using two signal acquisitions. When the receiver phase factor is cycled counter-clockwise (REVERSED), these artifacts are completely removed.
