The dynamic characterization is important in making accurate predictions of the seismic response of the hybrid structures dominated by different damping mechanisms. Different damping characteristics arise from the construction of the tower with different materials: steel for the upper part; reinforced concrete for the lower main part and interaction with supporting soil. The process of modeling damping matrices and experimental verification is challenging because damping cannot be determined via static tests as can mass and stiffness. The assumption of classical damping is not appropriate if the system to be analyzed consists of two or more parts with significantly different levels of damping, such as steel/concrete mixed structure - supporting soil coupled system. The dynamic response of structures is critically determined by the damping mechanisms, and its value is very important for the design and analysis of vibrating structures. An analytical approach capable of evaluating the equivalent modal damping ratio from structural components is desirable for improving seismic design. Two approaches are considered to define and investigate dynamic characteristics of hybrid tower of cable-stayed bridges: The first approach makes use of a simplified approximation of two lumped masses to investigate the structure irregularity effects including damping of different material, mass ratio, frequency ratio on dynamic characteristics and modal damping; the second approach employs a detailed numerical step-by step integration procedure in which the damping matrices of the upper and the lower substructures are modeled with the Rayleigh damping formulation.

Spent fuel racks are steel structures used in the storage of the spent fuel removed from the nuclear power reactor. Rack units are submerged in the depths of the spent fuel pool to keep the fuel cool. Their free-standing design isolates their bases from the pool floor reducing structural stresses in case of seismic event. However, these singular features complicate their seismic analysis which involves a transient dynamic response with geometrical nonlinearities and fluid-structure interactions. An accurate estimation of the response is essential to achieve a safe pool layout and a reliable structural design. An analysis methodology based on the hydrodynamic mass concept and implicit integration algorithms was developed ad-hoc, but some dispersion of results still remains. In order to validate the analysis methodology, vibration tests are carried out on a reduced scale mock-up of a 2-rack system. The two rack mockups are submerged in free-standing conditions inside a rigid pool tank loaded with fake fuel assemblies and subjected to accelerations on a unidirectional shaking table. This article compares the experimental data with the numerical outputs of a finite element model built in ANSYS Mechanical. The in-phase motion of both units is highlighted and the water coupling effect is detailed. Results show a good agreement validating the methodology.
The static design approach in the current code implies that the inherent torsional moment represents the state of zero inertial torsional moments at the center of mass (CM). However, both experimental and analytical results prove the existence of a large amount of the inertial torsional moment at the CM. Also, the definition of eccentricity by engineers, which is referred to as the resistance eccentricity, is defined as the distance between the center of mass and the center of resistance, which is conceptually different from the static eccentricity in the current codes, defined as the arm length about the center of rotation. The difference in the definitions of eccentricity should be made clear to avoid confusion about the torsion design. This study proposed prediction equations as a function of resistance eccentricity based on a resistance eccentricity model with advantages of (1) the recognition of the existence of torsional moment at the CM, (2) the avoidance of the confusion by using resistance eccentricity instead of the design eccentricity, and (3) a clear relationship of applied inertial forces at the CM and resisting forces. These predictions are compared with the seismic responses obtained from time-history analyses of a five-story building structure under moderate and severe earthquakes. Then, the trend of the resistance eccentricity corresponding to the maximum edge drift is investigated for elastic and inelastic responses. The comparison given in this study shows that these prediction equations can serve as a useful reference for the prediction in both the elastic and the inelastic ranges.

In this study, the accuracy of a real-time hybrid test (RTHT) employed for a performance test of a tuned mass damper (TMD) on an offshore wind turbine (OWT) with a complicated jacket-type supporting structure is quantified and evaluated by comparing the RTHT results with the experimental data obtained from a shaking table test (STT), in which a 1/25-scale model for a typical 5-MW OWT controlled by a TMD was tested. In the RTHT, the jacket-type OWT structure was modelled using both multiple-DOF (MDOF) and single-DOF (SDOF) numerical models. When compared with the STT test data, the test results of the RTHT show that while the SDOF model, which requires less control computational time, is able to well predict the peak responses of the nacelle and TMD only, the MDOF model is able to effectively predict both the peak and over-all time-history responses at multiple critical locations of an OWT structure. This also indicates that, depending on the type of structural responses considered, an RTHT with either an SDOF or a MDOF model may be a promising alternative to the STT to assess the effectiveness of a TMD for seismic mitigation in an OWT context.

This study presents the performance evaluation of a tuned mass damper (TMD) for controlling seismic responses of the nonlinear hysteretic structure represented by a Bouc-Wen model, considering that the general reinforce concrete building structures subject to earthquake load show nonlinear hysteretic behavior. Numerical analysis result indicates that the performance of a passive TMD of which design parameters are optimized for a elastic structure deteriorates when the hysteretic portion of the structural responses increases, while a semi-actively operated TMD shows about 15-40% more response reduction than the TMD.

In this study, in order to. investigate the effectiveness af tuned liquid damper (TLD) for the seismic performance enhancement af the existing reinforced concrete (RC) apartment structure which is nat seismically designed, shaking table test was conducted for the small scale five stary RC structure with TLD. TLD model was constructed to. have the frequency tuned to. the first modal frequency af the structure, $2\%$ mass ratio. af the first modal mass, and 0.08 liquid depth ratio. White noise with $0.2\~5Hz$ frequency bandwidth tests were performed using the shaking table at Korea Institute af Machinery and Materials, and the displacement and absolute acceleration af each floor were measured. Test results indicate that mare than $30\%$ seismic responses reduction can be achieved using TLD for RC structure under white noise.

The research concentrates on improving the in-hole seismic probe, which has been developed in past five years, to be used in stiffness measurements of tunnel-face materials. The probe was down-sized to be fit in 45-mm diameter holes(or BX) drilled by a jumbo-drill, which is used to drill holes to install explosives for tunneling. Also trigger system was improved by using a down-speeding motor for operating convenience and air packing system was replaced with a set of plate-springs to eliminate supply of compressed air. These modifications are to adjust the probe for the unfavourable environment inside of tunnels and to test without any further drilling cost. The probe and testing procedure were successfully adopted with horizontal holes drilled by a jumbo-drill at a tunnel-face to evaluate the stiffness of rock mass. The measured shear wave velocities can be used to estimate deformation properties of rock mass for tunnel analyses.
In this paper, a silicon piezoresistive accelerometer of which the cantilevers have uniform thickness is designed and fabricated with SOI wafer. The accelerometer consists of a seismic mass and four cantilevers, and is fabricated mainly by the anisotropic etching method using EPW etchant. The fabrication processes are that of the frontside processes including the etching of the cantilevers and the doubleside alignment holes, the diffusion of the piezoresisters and patterning of the contact windows, and the metal connection process, and that of the backside processes including the etching of the shallow cavity and the seismic mass. Because of the uniformity of thickness, the performance of the accelerometer fabricated with SOI wafer is expected to be better than that of accelerometer fabricated by the time-controlled etching method.

To study the influence of an lower part on the seismic response of a spatial structure as the upper part of a structure, as a first step, authors subsititude the upper part and the lower part of a structure to single degree of freedom systems indivisually, and set up structural models connected by them. It is clarified that the mass ratio and the period ratio of an upper part to a lower part are important parameteres to find the amplification or reduction of the sesimic response of an upper part by considering of a lower part.
