In the main target area of the block II, Targe-scale faults occur below the unconformity developed around 1 km in depth. The contrast of seismic velocity around the unconformity is generally so large that the strong multiples and the radical velocity variation would deteriorate the quality of migrated section due to serious distortion. More than 15 kinds of data processing techniques have been applied to improve the image resolution for the structures farmed from this active crustal activity. The bad and noisy traces were edited on the common shot gathers in the first step to get rid of acquisition problems which could take place from unfavorable conditions such as climatic change during data acquisition. Correction of amplitude attenuation caused from spherical divergence and inelastic attenuation has been also applied. Mild F/K filter was used to attenuate coherent noise such as guided waves and side scatters. Predictive deconvolution has been applied before stacking to remove peg-leg multiples and water reverberations. The velocity analysis process was conducted at every 2 km interval to analyze migration velocity, and it was iterated to get the high fidelity image. The strum noise caused from streamer was completely removed by applying predictive deconvolution in time space and ${\tau}-P$ domain. Residual multiples caused from thin layer or water bottom were eliminated through parabolic radon transform demultiple process. The migration using curved ray Kirchhoff-style algorithm has been applied to stack data. The velocity obtained after several iteration approach for MVA (migration velocity analysis) was used instead or DMO for the migration velocity. Using various testing methods, optimum seismic processing parameter can be obtained for structural and stratigraphic interpretation in the Block II, Yellow Sea Basin.

Seismic refraction survey was peformed for 10 lines along NE-SW and NW-SE directions above Nampoong gallery at Makyo-ri, Dogye, Samcheok, Kangwon-do. 48 geophones were laid in line with the interval of 1m, and a 5Kg hammer was used as a source at 5 points for each line. Data processing was done using reciprocal time method, GRM, and traveltime tomography which utilizes wavefront expansion method for forward process and SIRT for inversion. The result shows that the first layer has its lower boundary between 3.49m and 8.88m. The P-wave velocity of the first and the second layer were estimated as 270 360m/s and 1550 1940m/s respectively. When the boundary of the first and second layer is smooth enough and the velocity difference is large enough, GRM has little advantage over reciprocal time method. The result of reciprocal method and traveltime tomography shows consistency. The northeast part of the boundary has syncline structure, which is similar to the topography above. This implies that the collapse of the cavities of Nampoong gallery result in the subsidence of the ground surface. The subsidence is in progress across the Youngdong railroad, therefore a proper reinforcement work is required.
First arrival signals of multi-frequency crosswell seismic data, acquired in wells drilled in granitic rock, were analyzed to investigate the characteristic behavior of the signals at the shear zones. Dominant frequencies of the sources were; 10-, 20-, 40-, 56-, and 80 kHz. No obvious changes in the waveform at the shear zones were found; however, at the shear zones, some degree of velocity reductions were observed in the signals of all frequency sources. The 80 kHz signal is slightly faster than 10 kHz signal in the survey region, and the velocity difference between the two signals were found largest at the shear zone where the permeability measured greatest in the survey interval.

Chile is characterized by the largest seismicity in the world which produces strong earthquakes every $83{\pm}9years$ in the Central part of Chile, where it is located Santiago, the capital of Chile. The short interval between large earthquakes magnitude 8.5 has conditioned the Chilean seismic design practice to achieve almost operational performance level, despite the fact that the Chilean Code declares a scope of life safe performance level. Several Indexes have been widely used throughout the years in Chile to evaluate the structural characteristics of concrete buildings, with the intent to find a correlation between general structural conception and successful seismic performance. The Indexes presented are related only to global response of buildings under earthquake loads and not to the behavior or design of individual elements. A correlation between displacement demand and seismic structural damage is presented, using the index $H_o/T$ and the concrete compressive strain ${\varepsilon}_c$. Also the Chilean seismic design codes pre and post 2010 Maule earthquake are reviewed and the practice in seismic design vs Performance Based Design is presented. Performance Based Design procedures are not included in the Chilean seismic design code for buildings, nevertheless the earthquake experience has shown that the response of the Chilean buildings has been close to operational. This can be attributed to the fact that the drift of most engineered buildings designed in accordance with the Chilean practice falls below 0.5%. It is also known by experience that for frequent and even occasional earthquakes, buildings responded elastically and thus with "fully operational" performance. Taking the above into account, it can be said that, although the "basic objective" of the Chilean code is similar to the SEAOC VISION2000 criteria, the actual performance for normal buildings is closer to the "Essential/Hazardous objective".
It is very important to estimate the physical properties of survey area and delineate the geological basement in marine site survey for the design of offshore structures. For the purpose of providing high quality data by means of engineering site survey, it is necessary to apply several survey techniques and carry out the integrated interpretation to each other. In this study, we applied single channel seismic reflection method and OBC (Ocean Bottom Cable) type seismic refraction method at shallow marine. We used a dual boomer-single channel streamer as a source-receiver in seismic reflection survey and airgun source-the developed OBC type streamer in seismic refraction survey. We made 24 channels OBC type streamer which has 4m channel interval and each channel is composed of single hydrophone and preamplifier. We tested the field applicability of the proposed method and applied the typical seismic data processing methods to the obtained reflection data in order to enhance the data quality and image resolution. In order to estimate the geological velocity distribution from refraction data, seismic refraction tomography technique was applied. Therefore, we could successfully perform time-depth conversion using the velocity information as an integrated interpretation. The proposed method could provide reliable geologic information such as sediment layer thickness and 3D basement depth map.
In order to get geologic information necessary for underground installation of water pipe, seismic refraction profiling was applied to the southwest side of the Seomjin River which flows between Namwon-gun, Cholabuk-do and Gokseong-gun, Cholanam-do. Before obtaining the in-line refraction data, walkaway data were recorded with 1 m geophone interval and -36∼+36 m offset range. From the walkaway data, it is interpreted that a dry soil layer with the average velocity of 585 m/s covers wet sediments with the average velocity of 1,326 m/s. The second layer overlies basements nearly horizontally with the average velocity of 4,218 m/s. Refraction profiling of 220 m long with the geophone interval of 2 m is interpreted with the Generalized Reciprocal Method (GRM). Three layers are identified with average velocities of 688 m/s, 1,473 m/s, and 3,776 m/s, respectively. The depth to the bedrock impossible for ripping ranges between two extremes, 1.51∼2.43 m and 2.25∼3.54 m, depending upon thickness of the hidden layer. A typical shortcoming of refraction method, the hidden layer problem, prevents accurate estimation in depth of the second layer.
To estimate the S-wave velocity structure beneath the KS31 broad-band station in Wonju, Korea, we used $H-{\kappa}$ stacking and joint inversion of receiver functions and surface-wave dispersion curves derived from 297 teleseismic events (Mw > 5.5) recorded during the period between 2002 and 2009. We thereby determined that the average depth to a nearly flat Moho is $32.4{\pm}0.5\;km$ within tens of kilometer radius of the seismic station. For the crust at this location, we estimate an average shear-wave velocity of 3.69 km/s and a ratio of P- to S-wave velocities, $V_p/V_s$, of $1.72{\pm}0.04$, as is typical for continental crust. A negative phase in the receiver functions at 1 s indicates the presence of a shearwave low velocity layer in a depth interval of 10 to 18 km in the upper crust beneath the KS31 station.
A shallow high-resolution seismic reflection survey was carried out at the Mineopo tidal flat on the western coast of Korea. The purpose of the survey was to investigate shallow sedimentary structure of the tidal flat associated with the recent sea level change. A total of 795 shots were generated at 1 m interval from a 5-kg hammer source and recorded on 48 channels of 100 Hz geophones along two mutually perpendicular profiles. The water-saturated ground condition resulted in suppressed ground rolls by significantly decreasing rigidity. In addition, seismic velocities over 1500 m/s provided easy segregation of reflected arrivals from lower velocity noise. As a consequence, seismic sections from the study area show significantly higher resolution and signal to noise ratio than conventional land seismic sections. The tidal flat consists of 5 sedimentary sequences above acoustic basement. The seismic sections reveal the continuous structure of the tidal flat formed in association with sea level rise during the Holocene.

For effective and accurate prediction of overpressure in the Efomeh field, located in the Niger delta basin of Nigeria, integrated seismic and borehole analyses were undertaken. Normal and abnormal pore pressure zones were delineated based on the principle of normal and deviation from normal velocity trends. The transition between the two trends signifies the top of overpressure. The overpressure tops were picked at regular intervals from seismic data using interval velocities obtained by applying Dix's approximation. The accuracy of the predicted overpressure zone was confirmed from the sonic velocity data of the Efomeh 01 well. The variation to the depth of overpressure between the predicted and observed values was less than 10mat the Efomeh 01 well location, with confidence of over 99 per cent. The depth map generated shows that the depth distribution to the top of the overpressure zone of the Efomeh field falls within the sub-sea depth range of 2655${\pm}$2m (2550 ms) to 3720${\pm}$2m (2900 ms). This depth conforms to thick marine shales using the Efomeh 01 composite log. The lower part of the Agbada Formation within the Efomeh field is overpressured and the depth of the top of the overpressure does not follow any time-stratigraphic boundary across the field. Prediction of the top of the overpressure zone within the Efomeh field for potential wells that will total depth beyond 2440m sub-sea is very important for safer drilling practice as well as the prevention of lost circulation.
In order to map the acoustic basement and to locate fracture zones in the Galgok fault, seismic refraction data were acquired near the Chonbuk ranch in Gyeongju. Along three profiles of 72m(Line 1), 72m(Line 2), and 36m(Line 3) long, seismic signals were generated by a 5kg hammer. The refraction data were collected by employing twelve 8 Hz geophones at an interval of 3m and recording time of 192ms at a sampling rate of 0.2ms. The data are interpreted using GRM method. The top layer (Layer 1) is characterized as the velocity of approximately250 m/s and thickness of approximately 2.1m. This layer is regarded as a soil layer. Underneath Layer 1 lies unconsolidated layer (Layer 2) whose refraction velocity is determined to be $1,030{\sim}1,400m/s$. Layer 2 is approximately 4.6m thick and is regarded as a Quaternary gravel layer. The third layer (Layer 3) has the mean refraction velocity of $2,100{\sim}2,200m/s$ and is interpreted to be the acoustic basement. In some parts of Lines 1 and 3, the difference in depth to the top of Layer 2 is greater than 20 cm indicating the possibility of existence of Quaternary faults. Along Line 3 and the eastern part of Line 1, refracted energy from the acoustic basement was not recorded. This may highly indicate that a relatively large scale fault exists under the western part of Line 1.
