In this study, we develop and propose damping correction factors for the Korean standard design spectra. The newly proposed Korean standard design spectra has been given only for 5% damping ratio. But in practice, engineers need design spectra for damping values other than 5%. To obtain design spectra for various damping values from the standard spectra, damping correction factors are derived. These factors modify the shape of design spectra in accordance with the damping ratio. Response spectra for various damping values are calculated from the earthquake records that had been used to calculate standard design spectra. They consist of 55 records from 18 earthquakes occurred in overseas intraplate regions and Korea. The regressed spectra for the damping values ranging from 0.5% to 50 % are compared with standard spectra at three regions acceleration, velocity and displacement sensitive regions. The regression analysis of these data rendered formula for damping correction factors. Finally, a single formula for damping correction factors is recommended that is valid for both horizontal and vertical design spectra and that is applicable to the entire range of periods. One thing to note that recommended damping correction factors is valid for the design spectrum of the rock grounds because the design spectra was developed based on the earthquake records of the rock ground.
Least squares ($l^2$ norm) solutions of seismic inversion tend to be very sensitive to data points with large errors. The $l^1$ norm minimization gives more robust solutions, but usually with higher computational cost. Iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) method gives efficient approximate solutions of these $l^1$ norm problems. I propose an efficient implementation of the IRLS method for a hybrid $l^1/l^2$ minimization problem that behaves as $l^2$ norm fit for small residual and $l^1$ norm fit for large residuals. The proposed algorithm shows more robust characteristics to the decision of the threshold value than the l1 norm IRLS inversion does with respect to the threshold value to avoid singularity.
Investigation methods of cut slope are conducted generally only geological surface survey to gain engineering geological data of cut slopes. These methods have many problems such as limitation of investigation for a special area. So geophysical investigations such as geotomography, seismic and electrical resistivity methods have been used to search for failure surface in potential failure slopes or failed slopes. But investigation method using the borehole camera is recently a used method and it is thought that this method is more reliable method than other investigation methods because of being able to see by the eyes. Therefore, this paper was conducted investigations of 4 boleholes and BIPS (Borehole Image Processing System) to search for potential sliding surfaces and was applied to obtain information of discontinuity on failed highway slope. As the results of BIPS, we could decide potential sliding surface in the slope and conducted to check slope stability. And decided slope stability measures.
In Japan, geophysical exploration methods have been widely applied to civil engineering and construction fields for a long time. In particular, seismic refraction has long played a significant role in geotechnical site investigations for tunnels, dams and landslides. However, our growing interest on the social and natural environment makes the methods available and its application fields diversify. Digital technologies such as personal computer have revolutionized our ability to acquire large volumes of data rapidly, and to produce more reliable results for subsurface image. Also, color graphics easily visualizes survey results In a more understandable manner, These days geophysical methods are essential to assessing grouting effects, predicting the front of tunnel cutting face, monitoring the movement, pollution and purification process of groundwater. Now three-dimensional exploration techniques have developed for the site characterization in civil engineering and construction needs.
Based on intrinsic and scattering quality factor ($Q_i^{-1}$ and$Q_s^{-1}$) obtained from the seismic data of the southeastern Korean Peninsula, the expected coda quality factor (${Q_{Cexp}}^{-1}$) was theoretically calculated using multiple scattering model, and was compared with other quality factors such as $Q_i^{-1}$, $Q_s^{-1}$, and observed $Q_C^{-1}$ obtained by single scattering model. While the ${Q_{Cexp}}^{-1}$ values are typically comparable to the $Q_i^{-1}$ values, the $Q_C^{-1}$ values are different from the ${Q_{Cexp}}^{-1}$ values except for the higher frequency. Future works require to consider depth-dependent attenuation.

Korea is located away from plate boundaries which are not safe from earthquakes. However, having witnessed the large-scale earthquake in the Tangshan region in 1976 deemed as a safe plate, it should not be assured that Korea is absolutely safe from earthquakes. In addition, many seismologists have claimed that there indeed is a high possibility of earthquakes above mid scale that would occur in Korea. Because it is impossible to prevent earthquake, studies on seismic design and earthquake disaster control system are widely being conducted. However, studies on early response to earthquakes or recovery process are still very limited, and only a few studies for establishing earthquake damage evaluation system are being conducted. Thus, this study aimed to present essential data for establishing earthquake damage evaluation system that takes into account the real situation of structures in Korea. In this study, a nonseimically reinforced concrete apartment structure in Gangnamgu was selected as an standard type of such structures and its earthquake damage was estimated. The result of damage evaluation based on the derivation of vulnerability function and realtive story displacement was compared to that abtained using HAZUS Program Vulnerability Function.

A new algorithm for determining optimal accelerometer locations is proposed by using a frequency-domain Hankel matrix which is much simpler to construct than a time-domain Hankel matrix. The algorithm was examined through simulation studies by comparing the outcomes with those from other available methods. To compare and analyze the results from different methods, a dynamic analysis was carried out under seismic excitation and acceleration data were obtained at the selected optimal sensor locations. Vibrational amplitudes at the selected sensor locations were determined and those of all the other degrees of freedom were determined by using a spline function. MAC index of each method was calculated and compared to look at which method could determine more effective locations of accelerometers. The proposed frequency-domain Hankel matrix could determine reasonable selection of accelerometer locations compared with the others.
The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute has developed an advanced fast reactor concept, KALIMER-600, which satisfies the Generation IV reactor design goals of sustainability, economics, safety, and proliferation resistance. The concept enables an efficient utilization of uranium resources and a reduction of the radioactive waste. The core design has been developed with a strong emphasis on proliferation resistance by adopting a single enrichment fuel without blanket assemblies. In addition, a passive residual heat removal system, shortened intermediate heat-transport system piping and seismic isolation have been realized in the reactor system design as enhancements to its safety and economics. The inherent safety characteristics of the KALIMER-600 design have been confirmed by a safety analysis of its bounding events. Research on important thermal-hydraulic phenomena and sensing technologies were performed to support the design study. The integrity of the reactor head against creep fatigue was confirmed using a CFD method, and a model for density-wave instability in a helical-coiled steam generator was developed. Gas entrainment on an agitating pool surface was investigated and an experimental correlation on a critical entrainment condition was obtained. An experimental study on sodium-water reactions was also performed to validate the developed SELPSTA code, which predicts the data accurately. An acoustic leak detection method utilizing a neural network and signal processing units were developed and applied successfully for the detection of a signal up to a noise level of -20 dB. Waveguide sensor visualization technology is being developed to inspect the reactor internals and fuel subassemblies. These research and developmental efforts contribute significantly to enhance the safety, economics, and efficiency of the KALIMER-600 design concept.
A large subtidal sand ridge (Jungang Satoe) in Asan Bay, on the west coast of Korea, was studied in order to understand the morphology and sediment transport trend in a macrotidal setting, by means of analyzing sediment samples, current data, side-scan sonographs and seismic profiles. The ridge is about 15 km long and 2-5 km wide, with a relief of about 15 m. It is elongated in the flow direction of flood (SE) and ebb (NW) tidal currents, but asymmetrical in cross section. The western and southwestern side of the ridge is characterized by relatively gentle slopes averaging 0.4$^{\circ}$, whereas on the northeastern side, relatively steep slopes were mapped with 1.6$^{\circ}$ slope angles. Tidal currents associated with the ridge are very strong; maximum surface velo-cities range from neap values of 50 cm/s to spring values of 130 cm/s. The shear velocities during flood and ebb are strong enough to erode and transport sands on the ridge. Sand waves and megaripples (dunes) are the most common bedforms produced by the tidal currents, which show regional differences in shape and size on the ridge. The distribution pattern of these bedforms in-dicates that the flood tidal currents are dominant on the offshore (northwest) side of the ridge, whereas the onsho.e (southeast) side of the ridge is ebb-dominated. The sand transport path as inferred from bedform orientations is directed toward the ridge crest on the flanks, whereas on the crest, it is near-longitudinal to the ridge axis. The convergent, upslope movement of sands on the ridge flanks appears to be important in sand ridge building and maintenance. A significant ridge migration toward the northeast can be suspected on the basis of the ridge morphology, which may cause offshore hazards for navigation.
Liquefaction is one of the major seismic damage, and several methods have been developed to evaluate the possibility of liquefaction. Recently, a probabilistic approach has been studied to overcome the drawback of deterministic approaches, and to consider the uncertainties of soil properties. In this study, the spatial variability of cone penetration resistance was evaluated using CPT data from three locations having different variability characteristics to perform the probabilistic analysis considering the spatial variability of soil properties. Then the random fields of cone penetration resistance considering the spatial variability of each point were generated, and a probabilistic analysis of liquefaction induced settlement was carried out through CPT-based liquefaction evaluation method. As a result, the uncertainty of soil properties can be overestimated when the spatial variability is not considered, and significant probabilistic differences can occur up to about 30% depending on the allowable settlement.
